Inizialmente, fino a circa il 1900, Aarts fece soprattutto sculture in legno. Poi cominciò a utilizzare altre tecniche grafiche. Nel suo lavoro ricorrono raffigurazioni di lavoratori rurali, i lavoratori di dighe, vagabondi e mendicanti magistralmente incisi a bulino. Negli anni 1920 e 1930 il suo lavoro è spesso a carattere visionario con scene apocalittiche.
