Edwin Austin Abbey Sold at Auction Prices

Illustrator, Painter, b. 1852 - d. 1911

Edwin Austin Abbey RA (April 1, 1852 – August 1, 1911) was an American muralist, illustrator, and painter. He flourished at the beginning of what is now referred to as the "golden age" of illustration, and is best known for his drawings and paintings of Shakespearean and Victorian subjects, as well as for his painting of Edward VII's coronation. His most famous set of murals, The Quest and Achievement of the Holy Grail, adorns the Boston Public Library.

Abbey was born in Philadelphia in 1852. He studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Christian Schuessele. Abbey began as an illustrator, producing numerous illustrations and sketches for such magazines as Harper's Weekly (1871–1874) and Scribner's Magazine. His illustrations began appearing in Harper's Weekly at an early age: before Abbey was twenty years old. He moved to New York City in 1871. His illustrations were strongly influenced by French and German black and white art. He also illustrated several best-selling books, including Christmas Stories by Charles Dickens (1875), Selections from the Poetry of Robert Herrick (1882), and She Stoops to Conquer by Oliver Goldsmith (1887). Abbey also illustrated a four-volume set of The Comedies of Shakespeare for Harper & Brothers in 1896.

He moved to England in 1878, at the request of his employers, to gather material for illustrations of the poems of Robert Herrick, published in 1882, and he settled permanently there in 1883. In 1883, he was elected to the Royal Institute of Painters in Water-Colours.

Most tiles that have been located by the Tilers are of English manufacture. The media used for decoration was described variously as "German inks," "mineral colors," and ultimately "tubes of vitreous paints invented by Lacroix." Application of pigment had to be done quickly since the porous surface of the tile was highly absorbent.

Ink and pencil on cardboard 4-1/2 x 24-3/4 inches (11.4 x 62.9 cm) Signed with Abbey's sobriquet "Chestnut" with various inscriptions along lower edge FROM THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST EXHIBITED: Museums of Stony Brook, New York, "The Tile Club and the Aesthetic Movement in America, " October 9, 1999-January 23, 2000 (traveling thereafter to the Lyman Allyn Art Museum, New London, Connecticut, February 5-May 7, 2000; and the Frick Art Museum, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, May 19-August 13, 2000); Tyler Museum of Art, Tyler, Texas, "Studiously Slangy and Bohemian: The Tile Club--Artists of America's Aesthetic Movement from the Graham Williford Collection," December 14, 2010-February 20, 2011. LITERATURE: R. G. Pisano, The Tile Club and the Aesthetic Movement in America, New York, 1999, pp. 30-31, illustrated. Cultivating exclusivity, mystery, and the all-important bohemian air, the members of The Tile Club (1877-1887) based in New York City arguably became the first group of American-based artists to succeed in intentionally creating a "cult" of the artist. They delighted in publicity. With a tongue-in-cheek pronouncement, "Let us be decorative!" against a backdrop of America's post-Civil War "Aesthetic Movement" vogue for things decorative and beautifully-crafted, these artists gathered together at weekly soirées to paint ceramic tiles in any manner they wished. Although the tile-painting only lasted a few years, the Club members continued to meet for approximately a decade, engaging in bohemian antics and deeds. Important among those activities were the organized outings such as plain-air sketching trips to Long Island (1878-81) and up the Hudson River (1880). With the artists providing illustrations to the "travelogues" written by the writers of the group, their articles appeared in the popular illustrated magazines of the day (Scribner's Monthly and The Century Magazine), and captured the popular imagination for an "aesthetic" life. This humorous drawing by Edwin Austin Abbey records the first sketching trip made by Tile Club members on June 10,1878, to Long Island. They are shown by Abbey, whose Tile Club sobriquet was Chestnut (owing to the fact he told old stories!), wearing the enormous straw hats they all purchased in Sayville to shield themselves from the sun while sketching. The trek to their East Hampton destination was a sixteen-mile walk behind a horse-drawn carriage engaged to transport their luggage and artists' materials. The eleven artists who made the exhausting journey recorded by Abbey included (their "Tiler" sobriquets in parentheses): Edwin Austin Abbey, William O'Donovan ("O'Donoghue"), journalist William Laffan ("Polyphemus"), Robert Swain Gifford ("The Griffin"), Walter Paris ("Gaul"), Charles S. Reinhart ("Sirius"), F. Hopkinson Smith ("Owl"), Arthur Quartley ("Marine"), Edward Wimbridge ("Grasshopper"), artist-turned art critic Earl Shinn ("Bone"), and famous baritone William Baird (honorary member, "Barytone").While the group as a whole did not produce any distinct artistic style, the Club members--limited to 12 but in fact fluctuating up to 30 at one point--were some of the most notable American artists of the period including Winslow Homer, William Merritt Chase, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and Elihu Vedder.

EDWIN AUSTIN ABBEY (American, 1852-1911) Portrait of Alfred Parsons, R.A., 1886 Pen and ink on paper 11-1/2 x 9-1/4 inches (29.2 x 23.5 cm) Signed and dated lower right: E. A. Abbey, July 27, 1886 THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST PROVENANCE: J. P. Ballard, Reading Fine Art Gallery, Reading, England (label verso). This sensitive pen and ink portrait drawing, with its wonderful variation of line, documents an important relationship between the artist and the sitter. The American Abbey and the British Parsons were good friends, and painters as well as professional illustrators (both men worked for Harper's magazine). Abbey moved to England permanently in 1878, where he enjoyed a lucrative career illustrating great works of English literature. He and Parsons shared an apartment in London where they also maintained studios next door to one another. Both men were part of the so-called "Broadway colony" of American and British artists and writers who summered in the picturesque town of Broadway in the Cotswolds some 80 miles northwest of London. There, a lively artistic society formed around the home of American painter Frank D. Millet, and included such luminaries as Henry James, John Singer Sargent (whose portrait of Abbey is in the collection at Yale), and Edmund Gosse. The tight-knit colony fostered numerous artistic collaborations. For example, Parsons partnered with Abbey on illustrations for a book of Robert Herrick's poetry (1882), supplied illustrations for Henry James essay on Broadway (Harper's, June to November 1889), and collaborated with Frank Millet on a Danube travel book (1893). As Abbey noted of Broadway: "We have music until the house won't stand it. Sargent is going elaborately through Wagner's trilogy, recitatives and all: there are moments when it doesn't seem as if it could be meant for music, but I dare say it is. I've been painting a head. Sargent does it better than I do and quicker, but then he's younger . . . . Miss Gertrude Griswold sings to us like an angel. . . . We really do have a gay summer, pretending to work and sometimes working (for there are numberless places with easels in them to hide away in -- if you really do want to work) -- until four and then tennis until dinner time, and after dinner, dancing and music and various cheering games in the studio, but mostly dancing." Apart from his work as an illustrator, Parson enjoyed success as a landscape and flower painter. He was also a fine watercolorist and painted prolifically on a trip to Japan.

EDWIN AUSTIN ABBEY, R.A. (PHILADELPHIA 1852-1911 LONDON) In Awe, Oil on canvas, laid down on board, 120.5 by 81 cm. Exhibited: From the Hudson River School to the aesthetic movement , William Vareika Fine Arts, New Port, September-October 1998 (according to the label on the reverse). In Awe shows two ladies from the back, in a wooded landscape, wearing long colourful and decorative dresses. Although it is not possible to ascertain the source for this work, it is highly probable that Abbey took inspiration from a literary text. The viewer is invited here to use his own imagination to engage with the apprehension of the two figures. The exaltation of fantasy and imagination was at the core of the Romantic ideal. With its subject matter and the rendering of the beautifully detailed fabrics, the painting is perfectly in tune with the vogue for historical novels and costume dramas. The colours are vivid and the strong contrasts between the almost pure blues, yellows, reds and greens, create a wonderfully balanced composition, formed by juxtaposing large areas of colour.

EDWIN AUSTIN ABBEY, R.A. (PHILADELPHIA 1852-1911 LONDON) Her Majesty Enthroned, painted in circa 1886 (according to the label on the reverse). Oil on canvas, laid down on board, 116 by 91.5 cm. Exhibited: From the Hudson River School to the aesthetic movement , William Vareika Fine Arts, New Port, September-October 1998 (according to the label on the reverse). Edwin Austin Abbey R.A. took part in the artistic and intellectual Romantic movement that rejected the established social and religious values in favour of irrationality, fantasy and imagination. Romanticism inspired many artists to escape reality and the industrial present by fantasizing about other times. Although they were particularly fascinated by the Middle Ages, they were not only inspired by the past, they also invented science fiction. Working as an illustrator for the magazines Harper's Weekly and Scribner's Magazine , Abbey became one of the most celebrated artists of his day. He moved from America to England in 1878 and studied the medieval era, investigating Arthurian epics and chivalric poems. Abbey was also a profound admirer of William Shakespeare (1564-1616) and often depicted scenes based on romantic literature in order to create powerful narrative compositions. He flourished in the Victorian movement and was made a member of the Royal Academy in 1898. His oil paintings rarely appear on market. Her Majesty Enthroned represents a scene from a fairy tale. This elaborate composition shows a dynamic scene of knights on flying horses, two scared princesses kneel before her Majesty, surrounded by several monsters in the background. The imagery of knights is evidence of the revival of the Middle Ages but might also refer to the halcyon days of Arthurian legend and to Romantic nationalism. Most probably, Abbey executed the work after 1889, a date after which he increasingly turned to oil painting. He used a high-key palette conveying a soft and harmonious light, undefined contours and loose brushstrokes, elements which contribute to create a romantic atmosphere.
