        ANISA ABDULLAH : Triumph, 2011

        Est: RM4,000 - RM9,000

Contemporary artist Anisa Abdullah uses an exceptional approach to collage to express personal narrative, vintage and metropolitan symbolism, as well as her own past experiences. “The collages reflect my life, or ‘pieces of my life’ as it were, and therefore are also a reflection of my religion, family and culture,” said the 28-year-old artist. Born in Warsaw, Poland, Anisa’s father worked with the Malaysian embassy and up till the age of 13, she followed her parents on their travels to Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. She was sent back to Malaysia to complete her secondary education in a boarding school where she had to make new friends and learn Bahasa Malaysia. Anisa Abdullah (b. Poland, 1985) Bukit Bintang, 2010

        Est: RM4,000 - RM7,000

Bukit Bintang is carefully constructed using multiple viewpoints to suggest spatial depth. Being an ultimate tourist spot in a bustling city, the artist used local cars such as the hardy Proton Saga, and street signs to depict Bukit Bintang in this composition. As the eyes are directed towards the centre, a trishaw suggests the development of vehicles that ranges from the traditional to modern. Born in Warsaw in Poland, Anisa spent her early life following her diplomat father’s posting in Poland, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia but she was posted back to Malaysia to give her a Malaysian education. She graduated with a Diploma in Fine Art from IKIP College, Kuantan, Pahang, in 2005 - 2008, and a BFA from the Universiti Mara Institute of Technology, majoring in Painting, in 2008-2010. She was awarded a NAFA artist’s residency in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, in 2012. Her first solo, Cebis-Cebis, was at the Galeri Chandan on April 8 - May 8, 2013.

“There is one consistent message implied in all her works; a reminder of how vibrant and fast-paced our world today is. Whenever possible, we must force ourselves to slow down, take a breather, to stop and reflect. For Anisa, art has remained to be a constant factor in her life despite all changes and uncertainties that shook her vulnerably. Like her, there is an anchor we need to hold on to, and certain values to uphold, to ensure our grounding points remain intact.” Contemporary artist Anisa Abdullah uses an exceptional approach to collage to express personal narrative, vintage and metropolitan symbolism, as well as her own past experiences.Born in Warsaw, Poland, Anisa’s father worked with the Malaysian embassy and up till the age of 13, she followed her parents on their travels to Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. Jalan Tun HS Lee, formerly known as Jalan Bandar (and High Street before that), runs through Kuala Lumpur Chinatown, and remains a commercial hotspot to this day. The road spans 1.8km, and starts from Jalan Gereja to Jalan Syed Putra. Heritage buildings and landmarks are still present, though the wave of commercialisation has changed the locale, with commercial activity concentrated near the Masjid Jamek LRT station. The artist here depicts the many changes that have transformed the street, as evidenced by the multiple street signs that dictate traffic flow. One wonders how Jalan Tun HS Lee will further transform...

ANISA ABDULLAH (b. 1985) COFFEE BREAK, 2012, Mixed media, acrylic and collage on canvas

        Est: RM6,000 - RM9,000

“Collage helps visualize an idea, producing different perceptions such as desire, experience and the journey,” says Anisa Abdullah. “Coffee Break is inspired during my residency in Yogyakarta. While I was walking down the streets there, I saw people ‘ngopi’ and ‘ngobrol’, that is just having a good time and having conversations with friends and family at little food stalls down the street,” she added. In all these can be discerned the face-shape of a helmet-clad man. Words, in universe and century fonts and of all sizes, intersperse the painting. The play of the painterly and the collage also blurs the line between what is real and artificial. Born in Warsaw in Poland, Anisa spent her early life following her diplomat father’s posting in Poland, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia but she was posted back to Malaysia to give her a Malaysian education. ANISA ABDULLAH (b. 1985) A WALK TO REMEMBER, 2011, Oil pastel on canvas

        Est: RM4,000 - RM7,000

“Collage helps visualize an idea, producing different perceptions such as desire and experience and the journey,” says Anisa Abdullah. Jalan Petaling Poskod 50000 is undergoing massive infrastructural transformations that the Kuala Lumpur Chinatown will be cowering under the shadow of the 118-storey Merdeka PNB tower. At 644 metres high, it will be the tallest in the country, even outstripping the Petronas Twin Towers (452 metres high). Coming up near the Merdeka Stadium, the tower is scheduled for completion in the year 2019. Coupled with the 106-storey Signature Tower on the 70-acre Tun Razak Exchange, the Petaling Street tourist precincts could get dwarfed. New MRT network will also cut through the area. Even as the artist Anisa Abdullah, with a Hitchcockian cameo, takes a ‘walk’ in the area, it will become ‘nostalgic’ because of the heavy developments. Some of the buildings on the left with a forest of signs with Chinese letterings had to make way for the MRT while even the hardy Volkswagen ‘Beetle’ seems destined to be driven out. Anisa uses cut paper, snippets, newspapers and magazines for her wide-angle composition. Born in Warsaw in Poland, Anisa spent her early life following her diplomat father’s posting in Poland, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia but she was posted back to Malaysia to give her a Malaysian education. She graduated with a Diploma in Fine Art from IKIP College, Kuantan, Pahang, in 2005-2008, and a BFA from the Universiti Mara Institute of Technology, majoring in Painting, in 2008-2010. ANISA ABDULLAH (b. 1985) Triumph, 2011, Collage on canvas

        Est: RM4,500 - RM6,000

Anisa Abdullah is intrigued by the cacophony of urban life and latent symbols which she pieces together in her patchwork collages, since 2008. Classic and vintage cars and bikes are a fascination with her father, who works in the diplomatic corp, and here the iconising of a Triumph bike, picked at random from a motoring magazine, brings back fond memories, despite the mad daily traffic snarls in the Ampang suburbia. Triumph bikes also have cultural historical weightage, holding sway from 1902, before the advent of the Japanese. Triumph experienced a resurgence with new prototypes in 1984, ironically by incorporating Japanese manufacturing techniques, and heralded a bigger presence when it set up a sub-assembly plant in Chonburi, Thailand, fast becoming the Detroit of South-east Asia, in 2002.Anisa is also informed in her works by her pre-teen exposures to foreign climes, having the distinction of being born in Warsaw, Poland, and lived in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, until her diplomat father sent her back to Malaysia for her education and familiarization with her roots. After her diploma in Fine Art at Ikip College in Kuantan, Pahang (2005-2008), she continued with her Bachelor's degree, majoring in Painting at the Mara Institute of Techology (2008-2010), where she was fortunate to come under the guidance of Professor Awang Damit Ahmad. She was awarded a NAFA residency programme in Yogyakarta and her first solo, Cebis Cebis, at Galeri Chandan in 2013, was hugely successful. She was featured in the major contemporary women's art show, The Good Malaysian Woman: Ethnicity, Religion, Politics, at Black Box, MAP Publika in May 2014.

“ Collage is one way to visualize an idea, which is not a new matter in the art scene. Without realizing, collage and the medium used produce different perceptions such as the journey, desire and experience .” – Anisa Abdullah   Featuring at HBArt auction for the first time, Anisa Abdullah is an artist who specialises in the unique medium of collage. Her works are meticulously composed from snips of papers, newspapers, and magazines. The patches are carefully arranged and assembled according to varying colour tones in order to form a seamless blend, resulting in a distinct surface quality.   Sesuatu Ketika (In a moment ) transposes the viewer into Jalan Gandekan Lor, a street located in the vibrant cultural city of Yogyakarta. The artist skillfully incorporates multiple perspectives of alleyways and roads, juxtaposing elements to form an alternative visual reality. The tactile surface materiality of her work and signifiers of cultural context allows the viewer to reflect on how objects are perceived and the study of “structures of experience or consciousness.”   Anisa Abdullah obtained her Diploma in Fine Art at Ikip College Kuantan, Pahang (2005 - 2008) and received her Bachelor (Hons) in Fine Art, Majoring in Painting from UiTM Shah Alam, Selangor (2008 - 2010). She was selected for the Nafa’s Residency program located in Yogyakarta, whose residency artists of that cycle created works based on the theme of personal reflections.
