He studied engineering between 1937 and 1939 but at the age of 20 he began to focus on art and began his studies at the School of Fine Arts in Cairo in 1941 and finished in 1943. He took lessons at the St. Martin's School of London, UK from 1945-1947, after which he moved to Paris, France to work with various studios. In Paris he met the grandson of Henri Matisse, who introduced him to his illustrious grandfather which heavily influenced the young Abner. From this meeting, he was led to meet with Fernand Leger and began working in the artist's atelier in Pigalle, which later led to his introduction with the famed gallerist Daniel Henry Kahnweiler. Throughout his life, Raymond Abner rose to meet each opportunity with his strong character and will, proving himself both as a figurative and abstract painter.

RAYMOND ABNER Painting Egyptian Arab 1960

    Est: $4,000 - $6,000

RAYMOND ABNER 1924-1999 (Egyptian) Title: Summer Landscape / Paysage d'Ete, 1960 Technique: Original Hand Signed Pastel and Gouache Painting on paper Size: 50 x 64.5 cm / 19.7 x 25.4 in Additional Information: This original painting is Hand Signed and Dated at the lower left by the artist "Abner 1960". Exhibited: La Jolla Museum of Art, San Diego, The Louis and Charlotte Bergman Collection, 15th July to 24 September 1967. no. 139. Provenance: The Bergman Collection, The Israel Museum Jerusalem. Charlotte Bergman, who died in Jerusalem on July 17 2003, one month before her 99th birthday, was unique among the museum's benefactors. She lived on the premises of the Israel Museum for three decades, and died there. When she made aliyah from New York to Israel in the 60's, the Belgian-born Bergman brought her collection of modern art with her and helped Jerusalem ex-mayor Teddy Kollek found the museum. As the childless widow of an English architect, she promised to bequeath her paintings, sculptures and ceramics by such 20th century masters as Marc Chagall, Raoul Dufy, Henry Moore and Pablo Picasso to the museum. In return, she asked to build a home within the campus, sharing its security. She wouldn't have to put her treasures in a vault. She could live with them and savor them with her friends. After her death the museum plans to keep the white, single-story house and its 200 art works intact. Although he would not put a figure on it, they are believed to be worth many millions of dollars. They include a portrait in oils of a young Charlotte Bergman by Dufy, a personal friend, and a set of small-format Henry Moore bronzes, among other works of Picasso, Braque and other great 20th century masters. This work by Raymond Abneri was part of her extensive collection that was partly sold in 2003. Condition: Good condition. Note: This lot will be shipped from outside the UK. It may be subject to some shipping delays.
