In the “Trasparenti” series, Carla Accardi clearly distances herself from the distinctive features of her previous artistic explorations, such as the use of colour, expressive gesture, and painterly mark. In these works, she chooses to suspend, albeit only temporarily, traditional painting practices, abandoning all reference to painting as a conventional medium. At the core of her investigation is the creation of surfaces based on the methodical and geometric interweaving–in horizontal, vertical and diagonal directions–of thin strips of sicofoil, a transparent, shiny material. This choice is not only a formal challenge but also a process of synthesis and subtraction, in which Accardi develops a new sensitivity to space and light, transcending the pictorial conventions of the past and redefining the boundaries of the artwork. In this respect, her work echoes the research of Lucio Fontana, whose interest in space as an active element in the artwork is reflected in his use of innovative materials and openness to new visual dimensions. Like Fontana, who pierced the canvas to explore what lay beyond the surface, Accardi uses sicofoil to generate transparencies that expand and challenge the limits of the artwork, creating a constant dialogue with its environment. Both artists, despite employing different languages, share the aspiration to transcend traditional two-dimensionality, projecting art into a new dimension where space, light, and matter merge into a deeper perceptual experience.
