Oswald Achenbach, Santa Caterina a Formiello and Porta Capuana in Naples

            Est: €30,000 - €40,000

Signed lower right: Osw Achenbach With the church of Santa Caterina a Formiello and the Porta Capuana, Oswald Achenbach places two important monuments of Naples at the centre of his impressive veduta. The Renaissance church, located in the eastern part of the city, was built in the early 16th century as a Dominican monastery church and took its name ‘a Formiello’ (by the pipes, by the canals) from a nearby aqueduct. The Porta Capuana, which was part of the new city wall with which King Ferdinand I of Aragon extended the city to the east, was built only shortly before, in 1484. Following the later demolition of the city wall, the gate designed by Giuliano da Maiano was preserved as a free-standing structure. The actual main motif of this large-format veduta, however, is the lively market, which Achenbach depicts with an unusually large number of figures. From a lady dressed in blue in a carriage to people strolling with parasols, craftsmen and traders, farmers with their heavily laden packhorses and haggling customers, a diverse crowd has gathered on the piazza, providing a lively portrayal of bustling city life. Lastly, a soldier on guard stands like a manument at the foot of the towering wall on the right-hand edge of the picture, overlooking the scene. With his views of Italian cities and landscapes, Oswald Achenbach became one of the leading German landscape painters in the second half of the 19th century and had a decisive influence on the image of Italy at the time.

Notation: Signed lower left: "Osw. Achenbach". Frame: Framed. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany; Art shop Gebr. Schöninger, Munich (label remnant on verso). Oswald Achenbach's career as an artist was quite straightforward - very steep: The younger brother of Andreas Achenbach, who had already attracted attention at the Düsseldorf Art Academy as being exceptionally talented but also rebellious, was admitted as a student there as a child. He studied there for six years, until 1841, but always remained a pupil in the elementary class and drew. It was not until 1843, after leaving the academy, that he created his earliest, now well-known oil paintings on the first of seven trips to Italy. Italy became Oswald Achenbach's passion. He returned there again and again, accompanied by painter friends or his family. The artist sent paintings he had made in Italy back to the Rhineland. However, he painted sketches much more frequently and amassed a large stock of motifs, which he realised in large paintings in Düsseldorf. His "View to the South" made him a favourite with the public. Collectors from all over Germany, Europe and the USA sought out a painting by Oswald Achenbach. His feeling for colour values and light moods with a free application of paint, influenced by Impressionism, set him apart from the crowd of 'Italian painters'. The art world and society honoured the painter. Honours and medals from all over Europe are proof of this. Seven paintings by the artist are presented here. Each of them shows the great colourist Oswald Achenbach, but also reveals the storyteller that he was: The earliest work (catalogue 1293) 'In the Alban Hills' is probably in connection with Achenbach's second trip to Italy in 1850, which took him to Rome for the first time (together with Albert Flamm (see catalogue 1302, 1303)). The composition of the painting with the central group of oak trees still reveals the influence of Johann Wilhelm Schirmer on the young painter. In this atmospheric landscape painting, the portrayed story of the boy chasing away a snake is an almost incidental, yet dramatic detail. One of Rome's landmarks is Castel Sant'Angelo, and the view from the far bank of the Tiber of the ancient building, the Bridge of Angels and St Peter's Basilica in the distance is still one of THE motifs of the eternal city. Catalogue 1294 shows the "spectacular view" in the bright light of the early day. Achenbach's palette in light blue and light beige contrasts with the heavily shaded left foreground. The Hamburger Kunsthalle owns the almost identical motif in evening mood, which Oswald Achenbach painted in 1883. On his way to Rome - and also on other occasions - Oswald Achenbach was travelling to Switzerland. In Basel, he captured the 'View of Basel Minster from the Middle Rhine Bridge' (catalogue 1298). As is so often the case, the painter chooses an elevated perspective on the scene. The painting is horizontally structured in four parallel "layers": Bridge railing - river - city skyline - sky provide an intriguing background for the everyday people on the bridge. Anyone standing at the "Spiaggia dei Pescatore" on Ischia today can enjoy the same view that Oswald Achenbach depicted in his painting dated 1884 (catalogue 1296). The scene with the landmark of the Castello Aragonese off the coast is bathed in a soft sunset glow. The figures placed by the painter in the foreground and on the beach give the eye cause to linger. Oswald Achenbach was also an amateur actor and director, and this painting once again demonstrates his talent for harmoniously enriching a well-known veduta with a narrative foreground. The situation is similar with catalogue 1295: "In the park of the Villa Borghese", various groups of people have come together, looking like a cross-section of Roman society: Old and young, rich and poor, clergy, citizens and authorities are probably enjoying a Sunday afternoon on a warm autumn day. The prominent architecture is only captured at the margins of the painting; mighty trees, painted in an Impressionist ductus, and stone balustrades surround the "stage" of the park meadow. A variant of this painting, which has a different lighting mood, is now in the collection of the Düsseldorf Kunstpalast. In the painting 'View over the Gulf of Naples' (catalogue 1297), dated 1889, on the other hand, Oswald Achenbach almost entirely dispenses with human figures. The "star of the scene" is the rainbow, which becomes visible in the special weather constellation, the combination of rain and sunshine. A "picturesque'" event that the artist depicted several times and that demanded his full virtuosity as a director of light. The most eventful painting of Oswald Achenbach's works presented here is "The Eruption of Vesuvius" from 1890 (catalogue 1299). Strictly speaking, this is a historical painting, as the painter depicts the panic among the people of Naples when the volcano erupted in 1872. In Via Ponte della Maddalena, people flee from the deadly yet fascinating natural spectacle that is visible all too closely. Others pray to St Januarius, the patron saint of Naples, whose power is said to have protected the city during an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 1767 .A painting in the collection of the Düsseldorf Museum Kunstpalast shows the same place in a less dramatic light, in the evening during an approaching storm. The perspective of the monument to the saint is identical. However, a comparison of the two paintings makes it clear how much freedom Oswald Achenbach allowed himself with the arrangement of the "backdrop" architecture. Eight works by Oswald's brother Andreas Achenbach, twelve years his senior, can also be showcased this autumn. His domain is the seascapes and landscapes "north of the Alps". This is because the brothers of the same name divide up the market; their specialisation increases their desirability among collectors. Andreas Achenbach's virtuosity, especially in the depiction of water and dramatic seafaring situations, can be admired in the paintings from various phases of his oeuvre on display here. Goethe eternalised his trip to Naples in writing. Hackert was court painter there, so all young landscape artists knew the artistic significance of the city before they made the journey to Italy. But there was one thing that they couldn't prepare for before their arrival, and that was the sensation of overwhelm that they experienced upon arriving in the Gulf of Naples for the first time. This was exactly what happened to the young Oswald Achenbach: “When my father talked about his initial arrival in Naples, he always relived the same excitement again. 'I will never', he said, 'forget the impression that I felt when I first landed in the harbour at Naples! None of my later paintings were able to truly live up to that overwhelming glory. The sky, the beach, the sea, Mount Vesuvius, they all possessed colours that I had never seen anywhere before.” (from the German in: Caecilie Achenbach: Oswald Achenbach in Kunst und Leben, Cologne 1912, p. 12.) Thus it was only natural that views of Naples would become a central motif in Oswald Achenbach's oeuvre. The city offered him everything he was looking for as a landscape painter: Its softly curved bay; the volcano rising majestically in the distance and occasionally still active; picturesque alleyways and squares populated by fishermen, merchants, craftsmen and flaneurs. Here, Achenbach has gathered them all together by the bay, where the fishermen are watching a puppet show at the end of a long day. Our gaze wanders along the broad strip of coastline into the distance, where the people and houses become mere specks of shimmering colour. Vesuvius with its twin peaks crowns the horizon, illuminated by the light of the evening sun that bathes everything in a powdery red, those colours that the artist 'had never seen anywhere before'.

Oswald Achenbach: Feast of Santa Lucia in Naples

            Est: €80,000 - €120,000

ACHENBACH, OSWALD Düsseldorf 1827 - 1905 Title: Feast of Santa Lucia in Naples. Date: 1886. Technique: Oil on canvas. Mounting: Relined. Measurement: 139 x 197cm. Notation: Signed and dated lower right: "Osw. Achenbach 1886". Frame: Framed. Cf. literature: F.v. Boetticher: Malerwerke des Neunzehnten Jahrhunderts, vol. I.1, p. 13, no. 120. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany, acquired in the 1950s from Galerie Paffrath, Düsseldorf. Andreas and Oswald Achenbach were among the most important European landscape painters of the 19th century. As restless travellers, the brothers portrayed the places they visited and captured the feelings and impressions that the elements of nature awakened in them on canvas. Even during their lifetime, their paintings were in demand on the art market; the brothers even competed with each other as they both painted Italian landscapes. This led to a joint agreement to divide up the market: Oswald would henceforth remain faithful to Italian subjects while Andreas specialised in Nordic motifs. Our two large-format paintings - owned by the same family for two generations - vividly reflect this division and bear witness to the extraordinary mastery of two exceptional artists. The painting "Wild Stream with Watermill" by Andreas Achenbach (lot 1138) is extraordinarily powerful and intense. The scene of this spotlight is Scandinavia, one of the artist's favourite regions, and shares a torrent that rushes down a hill with force and speed, carrying debris with it. The surrounding bushes are shaken as it flows past and it seems as if the boulders have to make an effort not to be swept away by the impetuous current. Raw, powerful nature with its cool colours dominates this northern land, in which man plays a marginal role and appears on the right of the picture as a marginal figure subordinate to the elements. In contrast, the following lot 1139, Oswald Achenbach's "Feast of Santa Lucia in Naples", has a completely different effect: here, man in harmony with his surroundings takes centre stage. The painting shares a special, seafaring-inspired festival celebrated in honour of the Madonna of the church of Santa Maria della Catena in the old city centre of Naples, in the Borgo Santa Lucia. The inhabitants of the neighbourhood wear their best clothes on the occasion of the feast day and remain, on water and on land, in spellbound contemplation in front of the fireworks on the quay. The spectacle spirals upwards and rages over the promenade like a fire-breathing monster. Achenbach has achieved a masterful depiction of light and shadow here: with soft, darting brushstrokes, he renders the backdrop-like illuminated façades and the reflections on the water. The atmospheric scenery reveals his passion for the theatre and his former profession as a director, actor, and stage decorator. Two further versions of this work from 1874 and 1875, but here with reduced staffing of the centre and foreground respectively, can be found in the Neue Galerie of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen in Kassel and in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. The focal point of this nocturnal veduta is the bridge between Ariccia and Albano, inaugurated in 1854. However, Achenbach does not show the spectacular substructure of the bridge, modelled after a Roman aqueduct, but rather the pavement or roadway, populated by a donkey cart and several figures. In the background we see the town of Ariccia, designed by Gianlorenzo Bernini, with the Palazzo Chigi, rebuilt by him in 1664, and the church of Santa Maria Assunta, also built according to his designs.

Achenbach 1894, oil on canvas, 70 x 100 cm, framed After starting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy at a young age, German painter Oswald Achenbach (1872-1905) rapidly became a prominent figure among landscape painters across Europe. Along with his brother Andreas, the Achenbach brothers became known as the ‘Alpha and Omega of Landscape painting’. Oswald worked at a time where art was entirely academic and would be exhibited only if it fulfilled specific criteria, however he became an early member of the Düsseldorf Association, one which opposed the Academy and its rigid rules. Despite this, Oswald achieved recognition internationally, receiving various honours such as the Order of Guadalupe or the Knight’s Cross, as well as later becoming a member of the Art Academy in Amsterdam and professor for Landscape painting at the Kunst Akademie in Düsseldorf. Achenbach travelled frequently during his career, most notably to Italy, where many of his landscapes come from. He often painted outdoors, focusing on the distribution of light and shadow by layering paint in different thicknesses. Contrarily to his brother Andreas, who focused on painting agitated and dramatic landscapes, Oswald preferred southern scenes of more lasting continuity.
