Willem van Aelst (1627-1683) Attributed - Still Life with Peaches, Grapes and Butterfly

        Est: €3,000 - €5,000

Willem van Aelst was born in Delft and was a pupil of his uncle Evert van Aelst (1602–1657). Willem van Aelst was active in Florence during his trip to Italy in 1649–1652, where Cardinal Giancarlo de Medici (1611–1663) was his patron. After returning from Italy, he worked in Amsterdam. Peaches and grapes are presented on a marble table top covered with a red velvet cloth. Two peaches lie on a silver plate, behind them are bunches of blue, red and green grapes. A butterfly landed on the left peach in the middle of the picture. A vine leaf rises above the fruit like an umbrella. A wine glass can be seen in the background on the right. Two peaches and a butterfly form the illuminated center of the composition. The secondary accent rests on the vine leaf, which shines brightly here. Grapes and wine in a glass glisten in the dark. 45 × 35 cm, oil on panel

Willem Van Aelst (Dutch, 1627-1683) Still Life with Peaches and a Perroquet, 1651

        Est: $30,000 - $50,000

Willem Van Aelst (Dutch, 1627-1683) Still Life with Peaches and a Perroquet, 1651 oil on panel 16 1/4 x 12 3/4 inches. We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer for endorsing the attribution to Willem van Aelst, based on digital photographs. This painting is number 191970 in the online database of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie (as Willem van Aelst or Anonymous Dutch, with Dr. Meijer's assertation that the there is no reason to doubt the authorship of van Aelst). Provenance: Private Collection, England Sold: Christie's, London, July 11, 1980, Lot 36 (as Peaches, Figs, and Blackberries with a Parrot on a Draped Marble Table, and as signed and dated 1651) Leonard & David Koetser Gallery, Geneva, 1980 (as signed and dated 1651) Acquired from the above by the present owners, 1981 Exhibited: University Park, Pennsylvania, The Pennsylvania State University Museum of Art, Netherlandish Art, 17th Century, January 8 - March 22, 1985 Loaned to Palmer Museum of Art, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania, August 4 - November 19, 1993 Literature: Tanya Paul, "Beschildert met een Glans" : Willem van Aelst and artistic self-consciousness in seventeenth-century Dutch still life painting, PhD dissertation, University of Virginia, 2008, n. 131, p. 296, Section B, no. 131 (as "paintings with debatable attributions that I have not been able to confirm as the work of van Aelst, but which I feel may be the work of van Aelst.") Lot note: The carefully composed still life of peaches, figs, and blackberries, accompanied by a parrot, is a typical and highly finished work by Willem van Aelst, an important advocate of the pronkstilleven (ornate or sumptuous still life) genre. The various textures, reflections of light, and gradations of color seen in Van Aelst's paintings are what made him a highly sought-after artist among elite patrons. Van Aelst was brought up and trained in Delft, probably by his uncle Evert van Aelst (1602-57). A precocious talent, he entered the painters guild in 1643 at the early age of 16. His peripatetic youth next took him to France, where he remained from 1645 to 1649, and from 1649 until 1654, he worked in Florence as court painter for the Medici family, with his two primary patrons being Cardinal Giovan Carlo and Cardinal Leopoldo. Van Aelst developed his fruit still life compositions while in the employ of the Medici family, and it would have been during this time that the present painting was executed. Its rich, luxurious colors and opulent, decorative details would have appealed to his courtly audience. In Italy, the artist also met and worked closely with Otto Marseus van Schrieck, with whom he returned to Delft in 1656 (he had previously been in Venice from 1654-1656, after having to flee arrest in Florence), before settling in Amsterdam the following year. He became the teacher of several notable still-life painters, including Rachel Ruysch and Maria van Oosterwijk, and was held in great esteem both during and after his lifetime. Samuel van Hoogstraaten, a contemporary, wrote of him, "[He] so excelled at art, and copied so well from life, that his painted works appeared not to be a picture, but life itself."

A.R. Accompanied by an expert’s report by Laurens Bol (Dordrecht Museum, 1983). Depiction of green and slightly red grapes, one peach and a slightly open walnut laid on a marble top, with a vine climbing up behind it against a black background. Apart from its aesthetic effect, the composition can also be interpreted as symbols of vanitas as was customary at the time: the slightly opened nutshell along with the insects, butterfly and fly on the peach skin cause the fruit to decay. Willem van Aelst was born in Delft and later settled in Amsterdam. A long trip from 1645 to 1656 took him to France and then Italy where, in Florence, he worked for the Grand Duke of Tuscany along with Otto Marseus van der Schriek. This painting was created after his return to Amsterdam. According to Fred Meijer it is a "a characteristic work of the painter."

        Est: €250,000 - €300,000

The Delft painter Willem van Aelst devoted himself almost exclusively to the genre of still life. Against a grey or dark background he depicted rare flowers, fruit, game and expensive tableware, often presented on marble slabs and velvet. Characteristic of his paintings is the cool, silvery palette and striking light. An invention of Willem van Aelst's is the integration of fish into the type of magnificent still lifes. The fish still life itself has its roots in the early kitchen still lifes of Pieter Aertsen and Joachim Beuckelaer, and forms a distinct genre in the early 17th century. According to the hierarchy of genres it was considered lower than fruit or flower still lifes for example. For the first time Willem van Aelst combined the shimmering and silvery fish with exquisite and valuable works of art. The present painting is an outstanding example of this. It demonstrates all the characteristic elements of the artist's mature style. A grey veined marble slap is draped with dark red velvet creating a clever play of light. The rustic elements of the still life such as the fish, onions and leeks are combined with fine silver and glass vessels and in particular, an outstanding nautilus cup.

NOTES We are grateful to Mr. Fred Meijer of the RKD for confirming the attribution, on the basis of photographs, of this hitherto unknown painting by Van Aelst; he regards it is a 'fully characteristic work by Willem van Aelst, which fits perfectly for 1653' and notes that the bunch of grapes recurs in one of his still lifes of fruit in the Uffizi, Florence (in. no. 468). The date indicates that this picture was, like the Uffizi painting, executed in Italy, during the artist's sojourn there from 1649-1656, as court painter to Ferdinando II de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany.

NOTES We are grateful to Dr. Sam Segal for confirming the attribution to van Aelst on the basis of a transparency (private communication, 7 September 2000). He has suggested a dating to 1648-49 and notes the presence of a similar marble ledge in a number of signed works by the artist, including one from 1648 (catalogue of the Galerie Pallamer, Vienna, 1990, no. 1) and another from 1649, with Galerie Roelofsz, Amsterdam, 1995, reproduced in Bergstr”m, 1956, fig. 183 (as dated 1646). Mr. Fred Meijer, of the Rijksmuseum voor Kunsthistorisches Documentatie, The Hague, rejects the attribution to van Aelst and has suggested an alternative attribution to Pierre Liegeois on the basis of photographs (private communication, 20 April 2000).

(70.1 x 45.4 cm.) PROVENANCE Acquired by the family of the present owner in Vienna, 1916. NOTES The silver ewer in the auricular style of Adriaen van Vianen is identical to that in the still life signed and dated 'W.v.aelst 1657' in the Statens Museum, Copenhagen. We are grateful to Mr. Fred Meijer of the RKD for pointing out (letter, 15 August 2000) that this previously unrecorded picture postdates the still life in the Rijksmuseum (dated 1658) that had formerly been regarded as the latest example in which the artist signs 'W.V.aelst'. After this date his pictures are signed 'Guill m o van Aelst', as for example the picture, signed and dated 1659, in the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp. This canvas is also of special interest as it includes a self-portrait of the artist at work, seen in the reflection of the roemer.
