Although all the pavilions have been dismantled, this statue is still preserved and can be seen to this day in the Expo Commemoration Park in Suita, Osaka Prefecture, Japan. This mascot was deliberately painted by Affandi during the daytime because he wanted to capture its details which wouldn't be visible at night. Therefore, the painting features bright colors reflecting the morning sunlight. Affandi's admiration is evident in this artwork. The Tower of the Sun, created by Taro Okamoto, a renowned sculptor with many works in Hakone Sculpture Park, Japan. The strength of the strokes is clearly visible in this painting, with both faces of the statue painted very vividly and beautifully. There are colorful flags depicted, black, red, and green, symbolizing Children's Day in Japan. The Tower of the Sun holds profound significance for the Japanese people, representing the Goddess of the Sun and Universe. Because of its deep meaning for humanity, the Tower of the Sun will continue to be immortalized. For the Balinese, the Barong represents all that is good and virtuous; he symbolizes justice, righteousness, health, and prosperity. There is an enduring story in Balinese mythology that tells of the battle between Barong and Rangda, the queen of demons who leads an army of witches. This conflict centers around the Balinese concept of “Rwa Bhineda,” which means “two opposites.” The Balinese believe in dualism— that everything exists as a balance between two opposing forces (good and evil, birth and death, health and sickness, black and white, constructive and destructive, etc.). For the Balinese, this is the world’s natural order. The concept of Rwa Bhineda is crucial to understanding the said battle. The Balinese people, like most cultures, believe in the eternal and relentless struggle between good and evil. The conflict between Barong and Rangda symbolizes the endless contradiction that is inherently present in the order of all things. As such, Balinese culture counts among its attributes the Barong Dance, representing Barong and Randa’s clash, which Affandi depicts in this masterpiece. In the work at hand, the Barong, accompanied by his companion monkeys, engages in a fierce war with Rangda and her army of witches. She is eerily depicted with her long, protruding tongue. Affandi’s chaotic composition and expressionistic swirls, strokes, and sinuous lines evoke the dance’s dynamism and importance in fostering the idea of Rwa Bhineda, that is, the continuous struggle against forces of evil to retain harmony and balance. Affandi first visited Bali in 1939 and had always frequented the alluring island since then. The Barong dance and its associated myth resonate not only with Affandi’s cultural consciousness but also with his patriotic sentiments. Coming from his experiences as an artist-revolutionary during the Indonesian War for independence from the Dutch Empire, the battle between Barong and Rangda encapsulates the Indonesians’ collective identity as freedom fighters. Thus, through his Bali sojourns and this work, Affandi found even greater meaning in the Indonesian motto of “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika,” which means “Unity in Diversity.” In all aspects, Barong is a ringing representation of Affandi’s almost spiritual experience with Bali, which allowed him to exalt his lived experiences, emotions, and creative instincts. Until the end of his life, he succeeded in becoming one of the most influential Indonesian artists. Affandi is known for his ability to capture the essence of his subjects through bold brushwork and bright colors. Since his debut in Bandung, Affandi's paintings mostly feature scenes of daily life, natural landscapes, and self-portraits. He often paints with his fingers, avoiding traditional brushes, which gives his work a distinctive, raw quality.Affandi's biographers said that Affandi once exhibited at a night market in Bandung and was visited by Syafe'i Soemardja - a figure in Indonesian fine arts and architecture education. In the 1930s, Soemardja studied art at the Rijksinstituut tot Opleiding Voor Tekenleraren in Amsterdam and the Pedagogical Institute in Vienna. In 1935, after Soemardja finished his studies in Europe, he worked as a teacher in Bandung. He had just returned from Europe when he saw the Affandi exhibition. Soemardja not only praised Affandi's works but also bought them. Affandi recalled Soemardja's words, "If I buy your painting, it's not because it is good. But because soul is mature in the painting." It is not surprising that Affandi later admitted that, without Soemardja's encouragement, he would never have had a career as a painter.Affandi’s two paintings, one of which records the market atmosphere (dated 1938), and the other shows the rice harvest in a village (undated), can be said to be some of Affandi’s early paintings representing the Bandung period. The origin of this painting is from the relationship between Sjafe'i Soemardja, who had been a mediator for his colleague A. (Dolf) Levisson - who worked in the then East Indies as a teacher of physical education and German - who then bought it. Levisson's family spent the years 1940 - 1945 in the Japanese concentration camps. In late 1948 or early 1949, the Levissons returned to the Netherlands, where they lived first in Alkmaar and later in Amsterdam. Koesoema, a measuring technician at sugar factory in Ciledug. Affandi got his last education at AMS-B in Jakarta. Affandi married with Maryati when he was 26 years old, actually in 1933. Maryati is a woman born in Bogor. They have a daughter who also later becomes a famous painter like her father. The name of their daughter is Kartika. Before he began painting, Affandi had ever once become a teacher and also ever become a ticket man at local movie theatre in Bandung. This job was not long enough to made Affandi stayed inbecause he was more interested in painting. At the 30th of his age, Affandi joined Lima Bandung community, which was the community for five Bandung painters. There were Hendra Gunawan, Barli, Sudarso, and Wahdi and also Affandi as a leader. This community had a great contribution in developing arts and painting in Indonesia. This community was different with Persatuan Ahli Gambar Indonesia (Persagi) in 1938. This community was a learning together forum and a sharing forum among the painters. In 1943, Affandi held his single exhibition at Poetera Building, Jakarta which also being colonized by a Japanese army. Empat Serangkai -- consist of Ir. Soekarno, Drs. Mohammad Hatta, Ki Hajar Dewantara, and Kyai Haji Mas Mansyur-- lead Poetera Culture Section (Seksi Kebudayaan Poetera--Poesat Tenaga Rakyat) to take the contributions. In this Poetera Culture Section, Affandi act as a manager and S. Seodjojono act as responsibilitor, who held a direct contact with Bung Karno (the nickname for Presiden Soekarno). Before and after Independence day of Indonesia on August 17th, 1945 by Bung Karno and Bung Hatta (the nickname for Mohammad Hatta), Affandi actively made a struggle poster which can burn up the Indonesian army to defeat the Netherland's colonialism. This activity was done together with another painters and artists who merged in Poetera Culture Section, they were: S. Seodjojono, Dullah, Trubus, and Chairil Anwar. Next, Affandi decide to moved to Yogyakarta and built Society Artist 1945 community. This community became Youth Indonesian Artist community after S. Soedjojono had also moved to Yogyakarta. In 1947, Affandi built Society Painter with Hendra Gunawan and Kusnadi. This community was made to give a chance for the younger people to become a painter and artist. Then in 1948, Affandi returned to Jakarta and established The Indonesian Painter community. No longer after that, in 1949, Affandi got grants from India's government and lived there for 2 years. Affandi was doing his activities there and held many exhibitions at big cities until 1951. Furthermore, Affandi held exhibitions tour in Europe, like London, Amsterdam, Brussel, Paris, and Rome. Affandi was also pointed by Indonesian government to represent Indonesia in international exhibition (Biennale Exhibition) three times in sequence. Affandi (1907 - 1990) Menyongsong Hari Yang Cerah (Sunny Day) signed and dated 1983 (lower right) oil on canvas 40" x 55" (102 cm x 140) Affandi’s Menyongsong Hari Yang Cerah (Sunny Day) is symbolic of the Indonesian modernist virtuoso’s undying homage to the radiant charm of their matahari (lit. “eye of the day”), the Indonesians’ term of endearment for their sun. By the time Affandi finished painting this work, he had already garnered an outstanding amount of local honors and international exposure, including being one of Indonesia’s representatives to the Venice (1954), São Paulo (1952, 1956), and Sydney (1973) Biennales. In 1974, Affandi was bestowed an honorary doctorate from the National University of Singapore, one of the world’s leading institutions for higher education. Affandi received the “Bintang Jasa Utama” in 1978 from the Indonesian government for his artistic contributions to the Indonesian Revolution. Menyongsong Hari Yang Cerah (Sunny Day) (trans. “Welcoming A Bright Day”) exhibits Affandi’s expressionist flair. The revered artist first ventured into expressionism in the late 1940s and would never abandon it for his photographic realism in the early stages of his career, giving more importance to emotional mastery rather than technical prowess. The sun, a recurring icon in Affandi’s art, possesses an all encompassing power and radiance, symbolizing its significance as the giver and sustainer of life. The lush flora seemingly rises in adoration and homage to the sun, welcoming the arrival of a new day and the restoration and renewal of one’s sense of hope and strength. It is a likely allusion to the Indonesian national motto, “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika,” which means “Unity in Diversity,” symbolizing Indonesia’s identity as an ethnically diverse nation. The swirling strokes, which manifest Affandi’s unbridled gush of emotions, expressive resonance, and solid creative impulses, epitomize his avant garde practice of squeezing paint onto his thumb and then spreading it throughout the canvas. In the TIME magazine issue dated January 12, 1953, Affandi’s painting technique is described as follows: “Affandi never learned to use a palette, dislikes brushes. Instead, he squeezes paint onto his thumb, then smears it around the canvas. He will often spend a week studying a subject, but the actual painting seldom takes longer than 90 furious minutes. ‘After about an hour,’ he says, ‘I usually feel my emotions declining. It’s better to stop then. The painting is finished.’” The vibrant intensity of Affandi’s colors engenders myriad expressions that show the artist’s emotional sensibilities. He possesses a creative eye so well adjusted to a kind of naturalism that underscores essence rather than the rigorousness in minute details. Thus, Affandi’s work not only provides authenticity of character but transcends the boundaries of the physical and exalted right into the spiritual. Affandi was a self-taught artist, learning from reading copies of Studio, a London-based art magazine, and seeing reproductions of paintings by numerous European masters, such as Francisco Goya, Edvard Munch, Pieter Breughel, and Sandro Botticelli. Affandi would become the foremost champion of Indonesian modernism, together with Sindudarsono Sudjojono, the “Father of Indonesian Modern Art.” They led Indonesia’s transition from the conservative style of the Mooi Indie (Beautiful Indies) to the modern art of the Impressionist/Expressionist influenced painters who revolutionized Indonesia’s art landscape by producing works depicting the people’s realities under a then- newly independent nation.
