Aguilar is considered to be one of the pioneers of the 'New Figuration' Movment in Brazil. He took part in the International Bienal de Art de São Paulo in 1963 and 1977 as well as at the 'Opiniao 65' , Museu de Arte Moderna in Rio de Janeiro. These early works show various baroque churches from Minas Gerais in Brazil, known as the Cidades Historicas (historic cities). The cities are known as the major centre of gold mining in the 17th Century. In 1980 UNESCO declared 13 important heritage churches from the early colonial period in Ouro Prêto as part of the Cultural Patrimony of Mankind, where these woodcuts found their origin. Ouro Prêto was formely the capital of Minas Gerais and the richest city in the New World in the mid -18th century. One of the most famous churches, The Chapel of the Third Order of St. Francis of Assisi and the 12 Apostles (built by the baroque architect Aleijadinho) is in the present lot. The Saatchi Gallery in London exhibited Aguilar's Painting and Video Installation in 2007.
