  • SUAD AL-ATTAR (IRAQ, B.1942)
    Apr. 02, 2025

    SUAD AL-ATTAR (IRAQ, B.1942)

    Est: £6,000 - £8,000

SUAD AL-ATTAR (IRAQ, B.1942) SUAD AL-ATTAR (IRAQ, B.1942) Four Women (1967) Oil on canvas and oil on paper laid on canvas Signed and dated 1967 in Arabic lower right 53.2 x 87.3cm (21 x 34.6in) Provenance: From an esteemed scholarly private U.K. Collection Acquired directly from the artist Suad Al Attar is a pioneering force in contemporary Arab art, celebrated for her evocative and deeply personal exploration of the female experience and cultural identity. Born in 1942 in Iraq, Al Attar’s artistic journey spans decades, during which she has consistently challenged the boundaries of art while advocating for the representation of women’s strength, complexity, and agency. Al Attar’s early education at the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad set the stage for her distinctive artistic practice. A pivotal moment in Al Attar’s early career was her association with the renowned Iraqi sculptor and painter, Jewad Salim, a central figure in the establishment of modern Iraqi art. Salim was instrumental in the founding of the Baghdad Modern Art Group in the 1950s, which sought to bring together a new generation of artists committed to breaking away from traditional representational art and exploring innovative techniques and abstract forms. The group's work was groundbreaking in its attempt to blend modernism with Iraq’s rich cultural heritage, and it played a significant role in shaping the trajectory of contemporary art in the Arab world. Al Attar was greatly influenced by Salim’s vision and became part of this artistic movement that emphasized social and political consciousness, while also advocating for new modes of expression. Through her involvement with the Baghdad Modern Art Group, Al Attar began to develop her distinctive style, combining abstraction with elements of Iraqi cultural identity. The group’s collective efforts laid the foundation for a new era in Arab art, one in which artists could explore complex social themes while drawing on their own cultural traditions. It was during her studies in London at the Slade School of Fine Art in the late 1960s that Al Attar's style expanded and deepened. Immersed in the vibrant art scene of the UK, she merged Western modernism with her Eastern roots, which greatly influenced the mature work for which she is now renowned. Central to Al Attar’s art is the powerful and nuanced representation of women. As a female artist in a male-dominated field, Al Attar used her work to explore the roles and complexities of women in both her native Iraq and the broader Arab world. The female figure in her work is never passive; instead, she is an active, dynamic subject, often placed in expansive landscapes that reflect emotional and spiritual states. Al Attar’s works are imbued with a deep empathy for women's experiences, challenging conventional, often reductive portrayals of women in both art and society. In a statement from The Arab Artist Review, Al Attar explains her approach to the representation of women: “I paint women as they are—strong, multifaceted, and full of contradictions. They are not just beautiful figures or victims; they are alive with all the complexities that make them whole.” This quote highlights her intent to present women in a fuller, more authentic light—acknowledging both their strength and vulnerability. Her work has often been described as a powerful critique of the traditional and often oppressive representations of women in Arab art. In Art and Women in the Arab World, art critic Khaled Al-Salami wrote: “Al Attar’s portrayal of women is revolutionary. She creates images that speak not only to their cultural and social roles but also to their inner worlds, which are often overlooked. Her work provides a voice to those who have been silenced for too long, presenting women as subjects of their own stories.” Al Attar’s ability to capture the emotional depth of her subjects, particularly women, is a testament to her skill and her deep commitment to elevating their narratives in a way that is both visually striking and emotionally resonant.
