HAFID AL-DROUBI (1914-1991). WELCOME TO BAGHDAD. Circa 1960. 35¾x24½ inches, 90¾x62¼ cm. Atar, Geneva.

      Est: $2,000 - $3,000

HAFID AL-DROUBI (1914-1991) WELCOME TO BAGHDAD. Circa 1960. 35 3/4x24 1/2 inches, 90 3/4x62 1/4 cm. Atar, Geneva. Condition A- / A: small repaired tears and creases at edges; repaired pin holes at top edge. Al-Droubi was a member of the "Pioneers" art group, Iraq's first formal arts society, and was a key proponent of the formation and development of Iraq's arts community. Best-known for his Cubist paintings, he designed at least four other posters published for the "Republic of Irak, Summer Resorts and Tourism Service" in Baghdad. Each features multiple languages and depicts sites for visitors to see in the city and around the country. This rare image, a fifth poster by the artist, is previously unrec orded and does not appear in the Qatar National Library database. This row of modernist buildings is in Tahrir Square, in the Bab Al-Sharqi neighborhood. This area of central Baghdad is located on the east bank of the Tigris River, right at the Al Jumariyah (Republic) Bridge. While the 1960s brought some significant cultural and economic growth in the establishment of theaters, hospitals, libraries, and a stadium, Iraq suffered from waves of political upheaval and war between moments of stability. In the decades that followed, sadly, this market was the site of many tragedies, including routine bombing attacks.

HAFIDH AL-DROUBI (IRAQI 1914-1991) HAFIDH AL-DROUBI (IRAQI 1914-1991) Cubist Cityscape with Figures and Cat signed in Arabic H. Droubi (lower right) oil on board, framed 63 x 52 cm (24 3/4 x 20 1/2 in) PROVENANCE Private collection, London Hafidh Al-Droubi is considered one of the leading members of the modernism movement in Iraq. Having studied both in Rome, at the Accademia Reale, and in London, at Goldsmiths College, Al-Droubi's love for his home city of Baghdad was strong. It was so strong infact, that he sacrificed marrying his first love to be able to return home, after her father mandated they remain in London if they were to wed. Of all the styles Al-Droubi worked in - including realist and impressionist - it is his cubist paintings that he is most reknowned for. His ability to work in this range of styles, brings a feeling of ecclecticism to his paintings. Cityscapes are a prominant feature in Al-Droubi's portfolio, with other dominant themes including domesticity and family, reflecting his devotion to each. Al-Droubi mastered the manipulation of light, shade and perspective in order to bring beauty and intrigue to scenes easily diregarded as simply mundane. His passion for art also extended to teaching, and culminated in him serving as Dean of the Academy of Fine Arts, Baghdad, and chairing the Society of Iraqi Plastic Arts for six years. The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by a member of the family.
