      Est: €5,000 - €10,000

Possibly Joannes Eucharius Carolus Alberti (1777-ca.1850), oil on canvas (relined), Nude man with two spears and shield in the left arm and one spear in the right arm, appr. 1810, dim. 112 x 88 cm. The artist J.E. Alberti was born in Maastricht (baptized in the parish of St. Martinus in Wijk) as the son of an Italian lawyer and his Liège wife. In his youth he lives and works in Amsterdam. At the beginning of the 19th century, he wins a gold medal which launches his career. During the reign of King Louis Napoleon, Alberti travels to Paris and Rome. In the French capital, he is apprenticed to Jacques Louis David, the neoclassical painter of that time. In Rome he works diligently in the Academy but apparently he cannot choose 1 art subject and 'he is hindered in his progress'. This painting represents a classic warrior.
