Álvaro Alcalá Galiano y Vildósola (Bilbao, 1873 - Paracuellos del Jarama, Madrid, 1936) 'Portrait of a lady' Oil on canvas. 92 x 74 cm. Alcalá Galiano was a Spanish painter and decorator known for his genre scenes and landscapes in Central European environments, where he moved throughout his prolific artistic life, such as the Netherlands, Brittany (NW France) and Germany. He organized exhibitions in Bilbao and San Sebastian and was the president of the Association of Spanish Painters and Sculptors. As María Soledad Balbás Ibáñez states in her biographical file for the Prado Museum, “he began his training in the studio of Jiménez Aranda and later in that of Joaquín Sorolla, being one of his most notable disciples. [...] Regarding his facet as a decorator, outstanding examples can be seen in his mural paintings in the Provincial Council of Vizcaya, in the old building of the Ministry of the Navy in Madrid, in the Palace of Justice and in private residences”. Throughout his extensive career, he was decorated with numerous awards and medals, a highlight being the first prize medal at the National Fine Arts Exhibition of 1920 for his painting “La senda” (The route), kept in the Prado Museum (inv. P006495). He was also awarded the third prize medal at the Paris Salon and the second at the Universal of Buenos Aires, both in 1910; and the grand prize of honor at the International Exhibition of Panama in 1916. Renowned for his genre paintings, Alcalá Galiano also cultivated other artistic genres throughout his artistic career. In this particular case we can appreciate a landscape that takes the form of a view of the cliffs and the sea. In the foreground, the waves break against several rocks, but in the rest of the scene the sea remains calm. The artist reveals his knowledge of light painting, inherited from his master Sorolla, thus denoting a specific time of day in the scene, which is defined by the oranges used in the sky. The use of the contrast between the coldness of the blue and the orange tonality was common in Alcalá Galiano's conception of landscape, a clear example of which can be seen in the work currently in the collection of the Prado Museum in Madrid called "La senda" ("The Path"). Álvaro Alcalá Galiano was an artistic painter and decorator from an aristocratic family, thanks to which he held several titles during his lifetime (Count of the Royal Appreciation, Steward of Alfonso XIII's Week, etc.), who began his artistic training with Antonio Lecuona and Adolfo Guiard. He then moved to Madrid, where he first studied with Jiménez Aranda and then in the studio of Joaquín Sorolla, where he excelled. In 1902 he furthered his training with a trip to Brittany, Holland and Germany. He won several awards at several Spanish National Exhibitions of Fine Arts (First Medal in 1902, Second Medal in 1901 and Third Medal in the editions of 1897 and 1899), a Third Medal at the Paris Salon of 1910, a Second Medal at the Buenos Aires Universal Exhibition in Argentina in 1910 and a Grand Prize of Honour at the Panama International Exhibition held in 1916. He worked mainly on genre and genre scenes, and is considered one of the main representatives of landscape and mural painting in the first half of the 20th century. He was also president of the Association of Spanish Painters and Sculptors and organised several exhibitions in Bilbao and San Sebastián, and his paintings are currently held in various private collections, as well as in institutions such as the Prado Museum in Madrid, the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, etc.
