Muhammad Ali Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1942 - d. 2016

Born Cassius Clay in 1942, Muhammad Ali went on to become the most celebrated boxer in American history, earning an Olympic gold medal and multiple world heavyweight championships. He sparked controversy in the 1970s by converting to Islam and refusing a draft order during the Vietnam War due to religious reasons. After retiring from boxing in 1981, Ali was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and devoted the remainder of his life to philanthropy. Following his death in 2016, Muhammad Ali autographs increased in value and are sought after by fans.

While few would associate Muhammad Ali with art, he created a number of lithograph prints, including Let My People Go and Sting Like a Bee. As well as this handful of prints, most Muhammad Ali art consists of images created by other people or Muhammad Ali signed photos. MUHAMMAD ALI KNOCKS OUT GEORGE FOREMAN IN ZAIRE IN 1974 - 8X10 PHOTO. Muhammad Ali (/ɑːˈliː/;[2] born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr.; January 17, 1942 – June 3, 2016) was an American professional boxer and social activist.[a] A global cultural icon, widely known by the epithet, “The Greatest," he is frequently cited as the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time. He held the Ring magazine heavyweight title from 1964 to 1970, was the undisputed champion from 1974 to 1978, and was the WBA and Ring heavyweight champion from 1978 to 1979. In 1999, he was named Sportsman of the Century by Sports Illustrated and the Sports Personality of the Century by the BBC. Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, he began training as an amateur boxer at age 12. At 18, he won a gold medal in the light heavyweight division at the 1960 Summer Olympics and turned professional later that year. He joined the Nation of Islam in the early 1960s, but later disavowed it in the mid-1970s. He won the world heavyweight championship, defeating Sonny Liston in a major upset on February 25, 1964, at age 22. During that year, he denounced his birth name as a "slave name" and formally changed his name to Muhammad Ali. In 1967, Ali refused to be drafted into the military, owing to his religious beliefs and ethical opposition to the Vietnam War, and was found guilty of draft evasion and stripped of his boxing titles. He stayed out of prison while appealing the decision to the Supreme Court, where his conviction was overturned in 1971. He did not fight for nearly four years and lost a period of peak performance as an athlete. Ali's actions as a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War made him an icon for the larger counterculture of the 1960s generation, and became a prominent, high-profile figure of racial pride for African Americans during the civil rights movement and throughout his career. He fought in several historic boxing matches, including his highly publicized fights with Sonny Liston, Joe Frazier (including the Fight of the Century, the biggest boxing event up until then), the Thrilla in Manila, and his fight with George Foreman in The Rumble in the Jungle. Ali thrived in the spotlight at a time when many boxers let their managers do the talking, and he became renowned for his provocative and outlandish persona. He was famous for trash-talking, often free-styled with rhyme schemes and spoken word poetry, and has been recognized as a pioneer in hip hop. He often predicted in which round he would knock out his opponent. As a boxer, Ali was known for his unorthodox movement, fancy footwork, head movement, and rope-a-dope technique, among others. Outside boxing, Ali attained success as a spoken word artist, releasing two studio albums: I Am the Greatest! (1963) and The Adventures of Ali and His Gang vs. Mr. Tooth Decay (1976). Both albums received Grammy Award nominations. He also featured as an actor and writer, releasing two autobiographies. Ali retired from boxing in 1981 and focused on religion, philanthropy, and activism. In 1984, he made public his diagnosis of Parkinson's syndrome, which some reports attributed to boxing-related injuries, though he and his specialist physicians disputed this. He remained an active public figure globally, but in his later years made fewer public appearances as his condition worsened, and was cared for by his family.

The press photograph bears the original printed caption lightly affixed to the verso which states, in part, 'Louisville's confident Cassius Clay, who says he will beat British heavyweight Henry Cooper in the fifth round of their fight at Wembley Stadium….lands a powerful right-hander on his brother, Rudolf Valentino Clay, during the former's first gymnasium training session…..'. Signed by Clay in blue fountain pen ink to a light area at the base of the image, 'To Peter from Cassius Clay', adding the words 'Next World Champ' in his hand beneath his signature. Vintage signed photographs of Clay of this quality are rare and highly desirable. A couple of very light, extremely minor corner creases, otherwise about EX Clay's first bout against Cooper took place at Wembley Stadium on 18th June 1963 and is particularly remembered for Cooper felling Clay in the fourth round with an upward angled version of his trademark left hook to the jaw. Despite suffering this set back Clay started the fifth round aggressively, attempting to make good his prediction of a fifth-round knockout and opened a severe cut under Cooper's eye. Clay hit Cooper with a succession of hard rights knocking out his gumshield and Cooper's corner threw in the towel. The referee stopped the contest and thus Clay defeated Cooper by a technical knockout.

Muhammad Ali Signed "Introducing Islam" Brochure, PSA/DNA Slabbed & Graded Mint 9 A brochure entitled "Introducing Islam," signed by world champion heavyweight boxer Muhammad Ali (1942-2016) as "Muhammad Ali" below the title on the front page. Encapsulated and PSA/DNA graded Mint 9. The brochure printed on white and pale blue paper was published as part of a series by the Institute of Islamic Information and Education (III & E Brochure Series No. 1), operating out of Chicago, Illinois. Near fine, the brochure measuring 3.5" x 8.5." The slab measures 5.5" x 12.5." Muhammad Ali converted to Sunni Islam while in his early 20s, under the guidance of spiritual mentor Elijah Muhammad, the leader of the Nation of Islam between 1934-1975. Ali's celebrity in the ring made him one of America's most well-known Muslims, and while initially the Nation of Islam disapproved of this association, they soon relented. Ali practiced Islam during and after his boxing career. He made two pilgrimages to Mecca in 1972 and 1988 and devoted much of his later life to charitable pursuits. He converted to Sufi Islam around 2005. Muhammad Ali Handwritten Prompt Card Re: Race Relations, PSA/DNA Slabbed & Certified

            Est: $400 - $500

Muhammad Ali Handwritten Prompt Card Re: Race Relations, PSA/DNA Slabbed & Certified A prompt card entirely inscribed in the hand of Muhammad Ali (1942-2016), celebrated championship boxer, civil rights activist, artist, and philanthropist. The 8" x 5" blue-ruled index card is inscribed with 31 words in black felt tip marker, with five additional marks in blue sharpie. Encapsulated and PSA/DNA certified as authentic. A few fingerprint smudges and slightly blunted card edges and corners, mentioned only for accuracy. Else near fine. The slab measures 10" x 6.75" overall. In the fifteenth prompt card of an unknown speech, Muhammad Ali wrote in full: "--they want to keep us subject {15} / to themselves in a more / educational and scientific / way other than their fathers / did/, T,H,E,M, teaches us / that their fathers only used / the common--" While Ali is best remembered for his championship boxing career, he was also a man of many causes. Ali's conversion to Islam in the early 1960s informed his refusal to serve in the U.S. military following the mandatory Vietnam War draft. An increasingly visible symbol of pacifism, as well as the Civil Rights and Black Power movement, Ali, became a popular choice for college and university speaking engagements as well as rallies. This prompt card, entirely written in Ali's clear and fluid handwriting, was almost certainly used by him at one such event. This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
