    Firmado en el ángulo inferior izquierdo: "Alperiz". Nicolás Alpériz fue un pintor costumbrista sevillano de reconocido prestigio cuya calidad técnica destaca por su agilidad y precisión. Algunas de sus obras se encuentran expuestas en el Museo de Bellas Artes de Sevilla, como "Cuento de Brujas”, premiada en 1898 en la Exposición Universal de París. El interés de la obra que presentamos reside en el gran dominio y destreza mediante el cual Alperiz representa una tierna escena nocturna de una risueña niña que visita a dos burros en un establo. A partir de una escasa paleta colores y fuerte enfásis en los detalles, el artista consigue transmitir al espectador la cercanía de la atmosfera mediante un fuerte contraste entre las superficies iluminadas por un único origen de luz (el farol portado por la niña) y aquellas zonas que quedan en penumbra e incluso oscuridad.

Nicolás Alpériz was a renowned Sevillian genre painter whose technical quality stands out for its agility and precision. In this work Alperiz depicts a tender nocturnal scene featuring a laughing girl visiting two donkeys in a stable. Using a sparse colour palette and a strong emphasis on detail, the artist manages to convey to the viewer the closeness of the atmosphere by means of a strong contrast between the surfaces illuminated by a single source of light (the lantern carried by the girl) and those areas that are left in semi-darkness and even darkness. Born Nicolás Jiménez Caballero Alperiz, this painter specialised in landscape and genre painting and trained at the Seville School of Fine Arts, where he was taught by Eduardo Cano, Manuel Barrón and Jiménez Aranda. Already during his student days he began to be recognised and in 1884, at the age of only nineteen, he was awarded a prize in the competition organised by the Seville Academy of Fine Arts, and his greatest success came in 1900 when he was awarded first prize at the National Exhibition in Paris. At the beginning of the 20th century Alperiz began to sell his works in South America through his friendship with the Uruguayan Enrique Legrand, and in North America through his brother-in-law Ramón Granados. At the same time he continued to show his work in Paris, where he was again awarded a prize in 1913. Alperiz returned to Seville in 1918 and during the 1920s worked as a china painter for the Pickman factory. In 1928, shortly before his death, the Fine Arts Section of the Seville Athenaeum devoted an important exhibition to him as a tribute and in 1929 he was posthumously named an adopted son of Alcalá de Guadaira. Works by his hand are currently held in the Seville Museum of Fine Arts, as well as in various private collections.
