(Frankfurt am Main 1789–1872 Vienna) The Harbour of Trieste, signed, dated J. Alt 1835, oil on canvas, 55 x 67 cm, framed Provenance: Private Collection, Germany. Jacob Alt received his artistic training in his hometown of Frankfurt under Johann Friedrich Beer, focusing primarily on portraiture, miniature painting, and landscape drawing. In 1828, he embarked on a journey to Italy with his son Rudolf, visiting cities such as Verona, Vicenza, Padua, and Venice before reaching their final stop in Trieste. During their time in Italy, father and son developed a close bond, and their artistic styles and techniques began to influence one another. In this painting, Jacob Alt portrays the harbour in Trieste, positioned just in front of the Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia, where he applies his landscape technique to depict the bustling activity of the port in the afternoon. Their Italian journey was undertaken with the purpose of studying the works of Italian masters and the country’s landscape, and immersing themselves in its rich artistic heritage. They sought to convey the beauty of the cities they visited, producing a series of paintings that emphasised the interplay of natural light within their surroundings. For Jacob Alt, this journey was not only an opportunity for cultural enrichment but also a chance to impart his artistic expertise to his son. The works created during this period later served as the basis for lithographs and were compiled in the collection Picturesque Views from Italy. Jacob was renowned for his precise yet romanticised representations of the Italian landscape, establishing himself as a master of landscape painting.

At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "Ungern, Brücke bey Neuseen". Date: 1824 Description: The German-Austrian lithographer and publisher Adolph Friedrich Kunike (1777 Greifswald - 1838 Vienna) opened his own lithographic institute in Vienna in 1817, which soon became a leading address for the publication of landscape and portrait lithographs. Between 1820 and 1826 Kunike published several series of works entitled Zwey hundert vier und sechzig Donau-Ansichten nach dem Verlauf des Donaustromes von seinem Ursprung bis zu seinem Ausflusse in das Schwarze Meer (Two Hundred Four and Sixty Views of the Danube Following the Course of the Danube River from its Source to its Outflow into the Black Sea), which depicted a large number of landscapes. A large part of these illustrations was provided by the landscape painter and lithographer Jakob Alt. The present sheet shows a wide bridge with a wooden roadway and stone pillars connecting the bank of the Danube near Neuseen with an inland island in the river. On the river a narrow boat can be seen on which some cattle are being transported. On the bank in the foreground of the picture, three treidlers with two strong draft horses can be seen pulling a cargo boat that is still out of sight. Shortly before they reach the bridge, a grim-faced bridge keeper awaits them to collect the toll. The landscape painter and lithographer Jakob Alt provided the majority of these illustrations. The ruins of Devín or Theben Castle, where settlements were made as early as the 8th century, rise on a huge rock massif above the broad Marchfeld near the confluence of the Morava and Danube rivers. Since then, the imposing castle hill has been continuously inhabited and extended by ever stronger fortifications. It was only the French Grand Armée that ended this continuity when it succeeded in capturing and blowing up the fortress in 1809 during the Napoleonic Wars. The lithograph shows the castle, which is now a national monument, on its rocky cone and surrounded by the impenetrable waters of the Danube and Morava rivers. In the foreground, a figure depicted in a back view takes the position of the viewer and gives the view a romantic appeal. Jakob Alt (1789 Frankfurt on the Main - 1872 Vienna): View of Visegrád Castle on the Danube in Hungary, 1824, Lithography Technique: Lithography on Paper Inscription: At the lower part signed in the printing plate: "gez. v. J. Alt / Druck v. Kunike". At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "Ungern. Ruinen zu Vicegrad und Dorf Marosh.". The landscape painter and lithographer Jakob Alt provided the majority of these illustrations. The present sheet shows the so-called Citadel, the castle above the Hungarian town of Visegrád. On the sloping hillside to the bank of the Danube, this 13th century medieval ruin with the large Solomon's Tower stands in front of the picturesque landscape of the Danube valley. The fine-grained flatness of the stone print effectively highlights both the sunlit and the shaded areas of the fortress. On the other bank of the Danube, the village of Nagymaros can be seen, with its parish church and several houses nestling on the gently rising slopes of the river valley. (Frankfurt am Main 1789–1872 Vienna) Three Views of the Fürstlich Salm‘sche Eisenwerke & Kunstgießerei in Blansko near Brno (Restoration in Klepoczow, Altgrafenhütte and Karlshütte), all three signed, dated Jac. Alt 1855 and View of Raitz Castle (Rájec nad Svitavou) near Blansko from Salm-Reifferscheidt, signed, dated Jac. Alt 1855, oil on canvas, each 29 x 36 cm, framed (4) Provenance: Family Ownership, Vienna, for four generations. Born in Frankfurt, the painter and lithographer Jakob Alt received his first art lessons from the miniaturist Johann Peter Beer and his father Johann Friedrich Beer. In 1810 he came to Vienna to study at the academy. Shortly afterwards he married Anna Schaller, with whom he had eight children, including the painters Franz Alt and Rudolf von Alt. He taught himself landscape painting on many journeys to the Austrian Danube and Alpine regions and became an extremely sought-after and highly esteemed landscape painter. One of his last journeys in 1855 took him to Moravia and Silesia. Over the course of this journey he produced three lithographic cycles, two of which mainly show industrial works. Industrial workshops and the world of work come to the fore in the paintings. Part of this series are the three works “Restoration of Klepoczow”, “Karlshütte” and “Altgrafenhütte”. On an artistic level, they reflect the new spirit of the times with its enthusiasm for emerging industry. Prince Salm received the imperial-royal factory charter for his ironworks in 1810; his factory produced not only cast iron pipes for water, steam and gas pipelines, but also decorative cast iron elements and frames for avant-garde projects, such as the “Bubble’s Colonnade” in Carlsbad (destroyed in the Second World War). From 1821, the works formed a 25 km long interlocking factory complex with Blansko as its centre. The fourth painting, “View of Raitz Castle”, shows Rájec nad Svitavou (German: Schloss Raitz), an early classicist aristocratic residence in Moravia. A medieval fortress and later a Renaissance chateau stood on the site of today’s castle. After the castle was destroyed in a fire in 1743, the then owners sold it to Anton Josef Altgraf von Salm-Reifferscheidt in 1763, who had a new castle built in the style of King Louis XVI and a large English garden laid out. The building plans for the new seat of the Salm-Reifferscheidt-Raitz line were provided by the Viennese architect Isidore Carnevale. Altgraf von Salm-Reifferscheidt had the numerous, almost life-size cast-iron ornaments made in the in-house Fürstlich Salm’sche Eisenwerke and the Kunstgießerei in Blansko. The ancestors of the consignors worked in these workshops for decades and thus got to know Jakob Alt during his long stay in Blankso, during which these works were produced. The four paintings have been in the family since they were created in 1855.
