Josep Amat privileged, among his urban themes, the views of Paris, place of frequent trips and journeys from the first time in 1933 and especially from 1949. Josep Amat was trained at the Llotja School in Barcelona, and was a favorite disciple of Joaquim Mir. In 1922 he participated for the first time in a group exhibition, and sold his first landscape. Six years later, in 1928, Amat made his individual debut with an exhibition of twenty-eight works held in the Dalmau room. From then on he exhibited individually in the most important galleries of Barcelona. In 1933 he participates in the Spring Salon, being awarded in that edition and also in those of the following two years. Already fully consolidated, Amat held exhibitions in Spain, Paris, Brussels and Havana. Josep Amat privileged, among his urban themes, the views of Barcelona, which in the scene that occupies us reaches particular expressive force, with his characteristic agile and intuitive impressionist stroke with which he captures the pulse of the city. Josep Amat began his studies at the Ateneo Obrero, where Nicanor Vázquez Ubach was the director at the time, and three years later, in 1920, he entered the School of La Llotja in Barcelona. In 1924 he met the painter Joaquín Mir, of whom he became a favorite disciple. Soon, the joint painting sessions intensified to such an extent that Amat spent some time at Mir's house in Vilanova i la Geltrú, where he met other outstanding artists such as Utrillo, Nonell, Casas, Rusiñol, Apel-les Mestres, Maillol, Hugué and Rebull. In 1922 he took part for the first time in a collective exhibition, the Competition-Exhibition of the Catalan Association of Students, and in it he sold his first landscape and obtained a second prize from the Artistic Circle of Sant Lluc. Six years later, in 1928, Amat made his individual debut with an exhibition of twenty-eight works held in the Dalmau room. JOSEP AMAT PAGÈS (Barcelona, 1901 - 1991). "View of Paris", 1968. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated 68 in the lower right corner. Measurements: 37 x 45 cm; 49 x 57 cm (frame). Josep Amat favoured, among his urban themes, the views of Paris, a place of frequent trips and journeys from the first time in 1933 and especially from 1949 onwards. Paris impressed him and he painted intensely in this city. The work presented here is a view of the Seine River and its bridges worked with great detail and attention to narrative, a vivid snapshot of urban life with a totally personal sensitivity for colour and light. Josep Amat trained at the Llotja School in Barcelona and was a favourite disciple of Joaquim Mir. In 1922 he took part for the first time in a group exhibition and sold his first landscape. Six years later, in 1928, Amat made his solo debut with an exhibition of twenty-eight works at the Dalmau gallery. From then on he exhibited individually in the most important galleries in Barcelona. In 1933 he took part in the Spring Salon, winning prizes in that edition and also in those of the following two years. That same year he travelled to Paris for the first time, where he became known in 1936 in a group exhibition. In 1940 he exhibited for the first time at the Sala Parés, where he exhibited frequently until 1987. During these years he took part in the Barcelona Spring Salon, winning prizes in 1932, 1933 and 1935. He also took part in the National Exhibitions, being distinguished in Madrid with a third medal in 1941, and in Barcelona with a medal in 1934, a diploma in 1942 and the Diputación prize in 1944. In 1943 he exhibited for the first time in Madrid, in the Sala Vilches, and in 1949 he settled for a time in Paris, where he developed an intense pictorial work. JOSEP AMAT PAGÈS (Barcelona, 1901 - 1991). "Lake". Oil on canvas. It presents restorations in the upper right area and in the lower left area. Measurements: 109 x 161 cm. Josep Amat's work was always close to the aesthetic precepts of impressionism, both in the technique and in the themes. Thus, he created images that showed city views, particularly of the Costa Brava and of rural villages. In this case, the artist offers us a serene and calm view, where the brushstroke gradually fades into the depth of the planes that make up the image. The landscape, peaceful and serene, has been portrayed following the experience of reality, focusing on a specific moment of the day and its atmospheric qualities. Josep Amat trained at the Llotja School in Barcelona and was a favourite disciple of Joaquim Mir. In 1922 he took part for the first time in a group exhibition and sold his first landscape. The serpentine stems are topped with open corollas that endow the whole with multicoloured delicacy. The vase, placed on a gueridon-type table, is cut out in front of a window through whose panes of glass the spring greenery is prolonged. Exhibited in the Sala Parés, Barcelona, 1985. ref. 46112. Bibliography: Sala Parés, Josep Amat 1985 lam. 12. Measurements: 50 X 65 cm .; 82 x 67 cm. (Frame). The promenade of this Catalan coastal town, lively with walkers and cyclists, is imbued with a rich Mediterranean palette, infecting us with the peaceful and fragrant atmosphere by the sea. Josep Amat was trained at La Llotja School in Barcelona, and was a favorite disciple of Joaquim Mir. That same year he travels for the first time to Paris, where he will be known in 1936 in a collective exhibition. In 1940 he exhibited for the first time at the Sala Parés, where from then on he would frequently repeat his exhibitions until 1987. During these years he participates in the Spring Salon of Barcelona, being awarded in 1932, 1933 and 1935. He also took part in the National Exhibitions, being distinguished in Madrid with a third medal in 1941, and in Barcelona with a medal in 1934, diploma in 1942 and Diputación prize in 1944. In 1943 he exhibited for the first time in Madrid, in the Sala Vilches, and in 1949 he settled for a time in Paris, where he developed an intense pictorial work. Already fully consolidated, Amat held exhibitions in Spain, Paris, Brussels and Havana. At the beginning of the Civil War, he was forced to abandon plein air painting and began a period focused on figures and interiors. In addition to his awards in national competitions, he received the José Ramón Ciervo prize at the Second Hispano-American Art Biennial in Havana in 1953. Other mentions he received were the Gran Premio Sant Jordi (1955), the Ynglada Guillot Drawing Prize (1963) and the Gold Medal of the International Painting Fund of Barcelona (1981). Between 1942 and 1970 he taught landscape painting at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de Barcelona. He entered the Royal Catalan Academy of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi in 1981, with a speech entitled "History of Landscape". This painter is remembered as the main exponent of 20th century Catalan impressionism, and has been honored with several exhibitions, including the one organized by the Barcelona City Council at the Espai Pruna in 2001, on the occasion of the centenary of his birth, as well as with the Cross of Sant Jordi (1988). His work is represented in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, the Museum of Montserrat and the National Art Museum of Catalonia.

It was in 1933 when Josep Amat visited San Feliu de Guixols for the first time, a town to which he would remain closely linked throughout his long life, developing much of his work. On this occasion Amat immortalizes a beach scene in the Catalan town, captured in his characteristic expressive style.
