          Armando Amaya "Carlotta" Bronze Sculpture

          Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Armando Amaya (Mexican, b. 1935) "Carlotta" Limited Edition Bronze Sculpture. Numbered - V/VII. Dated 1987. Measures approx. - 17 1/2" high x 24 1/2" long x 22" deep. Comes with black pedestal - 24 1/4" high x 31" long x 23" deep. Sculptor Armando Amaya is one of Mexico's interpreters of the female form. Like much of the evocative art created in the Latin American tradition, Amaya's work is a confluence of European and indigenous esthetics. Born in Mexico City in 1935, Amaya studied at the National School of Painting and Sculpture under Jose Ruiz and Francisco Zu?iga. Later, he was appointed a Professorship at this same institution in 1969. He received much of his art training at the Esmeralda School, which was formed by a group of artisans producing government works. In addition to benefiting from his formal training, Amaya also learned from his environment. His attachment to organic forms is rooted in his formative years as when he lived outside of Mexico City, in a small town, where intimacy with nature was part of his everyday experience. His sensitivity to nature taught him reverence for growth, for developing and unfolding shapes. Originally purchased from The Curzon Gallery in 1997 for $16,000. Please see picture for original receipt, please note the original owners information has been edited out.

Armando Amaya (Mexican, b. 1935) Martha de Tehuana en un Banco, 1980 bronze, mahogany (base) signed, dated and numbered edition of 7 10 3/4"h x 8 1/4"w x 9 5/8"d Provenance: Galeria Tasende, Acapulco, Mexico (label to underside) Tasende Gallery, La Jolla, California (label to underside) Catalog Note: After formal training with Jose Ruiz and Francisco Zuñiga in Mexico City's National School of Painting and Sculpture in the 1950s, Armando Amaya later became a professor there. However, he was also strongly influenced by his time growing up in the countryside and traveling throughout various regions of Mexico. Amaya is one of the foremost sculptors in the Mexican Figurative movement who incorporates a modern perspective into his traditional renderings of women primarily. In this bronze sculpture, Amaya presents Martha from Tehuana on a Bench. Frida Kahlo helped popularize the colorful dress of the women of Oaxaca's isthmus of Tehuantepec with her Self Portrait as a Tehuana, 1943, in which she superimposes Diego Rivera's image on her forehead following their divorce. Yet here Amaya highlights a seated, austere figure from Tehuana, where the society is matriarchal in some respects and women control the operation of local markets.

          Est: $2,000 - $4,000

Armando Amaya (Mexican, b. 1935) "Mujer Flexionada Sonriendo", 1988 carved black marble incised signature and dated at back, on an integral shaped black plinth. overall h. 19-1/4", w. 18", d. 15" Provenance: Pasquale Iannetti Art Galleries, Inc., San Francisco, California; Estate of Jean and Jack Kelley, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Notes: A native of Mexico City, Amaya attended the Escuela Nacional de Pinture, Escultura y Grabado - later known as La Esmeralda - where he studied with Jose Luis Ruiz (1903-?) and Francesco Zuniga (1912-1998), eventually serving as the latter's studio assistant for several years. In 1969, Amaya was named a professor of the school, a position he held for many years. His sculptures, with their slightly abstracted solid limbs and exaggerated curves, are explorations of the dignity and power of the female form. Amaya's artistic approach incorporates his strict academic training, his appreciation for the artifacts of his native region, and his respect for his subjects.
