      Raphael von Ambros

      Est: €40,000 - €60,000

(Prague 1855–1895 Gutenstein) The Guardian, signed dated R. Ambros Paris (18)94, oil on panel, 46 x 32 cm, framed Provenance: Private Collection, Austria. Raphael von Ambros was born in Prague to the composer August Wilhelm Ambros. After studying at the academy there from 1869 to 1871/72, he continued his artistic training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Ambros received lessons from Hans Makart, among others, whose style had a lasting influence on him. He specialised in allegories, genre and portrait painting. One of his paintings was exhibited at both the Paris Salon in 1887 and in Prague. His work was also exhibited in Vienna, for example at the annual Künstlerhaus exhibition in 1897. Ambros's works repeatedly depict oriental scenes, such as the present lot which shows a North African harem guard. The artist painted this motif several times in different variations, portraying the guards wearing different colourful robes. In addition to the splendid clothing, the ornamental building façade is indicative of a wealthy environment. Castrated men were employed to guard the harem - the living quarters of the female members of a Muslim patriarch. The armed eunuchs ensured the women’s protection, although the splendid clothing and accessories seen here are more of an idealised western depiction.

PARIS 1888' (upper right)oil on panel16 1/8 x 12in (41 x 30.5cm) Provenance: with Mathaf Gallery, London;Acquired from the above by the present owner, 1992.Although born in Prague, Raphael von Ambros is considered one of the most significant Austrian Orientalist painters. Like his contemporaries Rudolf Ernst and Ludwig Deutsch, he was a student of Hans Makart at the Vienna Academy and later became known far beyond his city's borders for his masterful scenes of everyday life in Cairo. Following Deutsch and Ernst, the artist settled in Paris where he found great success and a ready market for his Egyptian subjects. His compositions are painted with masterful and realistic details, elevating and incorporating these first-hand vignettes of daily life into unforgettable mementos of a foreign and fascinating world. The man in the present painting is captured during a moment of rest from the arduous task of carrying water through the dusty city. He rolls his cigarette with meditative concentration, his ewers at his feet, waiting to be filled and once again continue their task of providing water to the thirsty city dwellers. The man's simple clothing is rendered in a striking blue and accentuated with a delicate and glistening gold necklace that echoes the whiteness of the turban and the waist shawl.
