Baroque painting: Jacopo Amigoni (1682 - 1752), The Mystical Marriage of St Catherine

        Est: -

Baroque painting: Jacopo Amigoni (1682 - 1752), The Mystical Marriage of St Catherine Oil on canvas in a stuccoed ornate frame painted in gold. Depiction of St Catherine being given a ring by the infant Jesus. The legend of St Catherine of Alexandria tells how the noble saint, in search of a husband to match her nobility, beauty, knowledge and wealth, is referred to Christ by a hermit. In a dream, after she has been baptised, he appears to the saint and - as a symbol of mystical union - puts the ring on her head. The Madonna, dressed in a red robe and blue cloak, holds the child, dressed only in a cloth, on her lap. St Catherine is kneeling on the left in front of the two, her right hand outstretched towards the ox hovering between them, the other placed against her heart. Very finely worked and detailed against a dark background. Frame with plaque: "Amigoni J. / 1675 - 1752" Dimensions: frame dimensions approx. 91 x 104 cm, picture dimensions approx. 69 x 83 cm. Good condition with signs of age and use, craquelure and small colour flaking, frame with cracks and losses. Provenance: from a southern German private collection. Amigoni was an Italian painter, fresco artist, draughtsman and engraver of the late Baroque and Rococo periods. He belongs to the Venetian school of painting and, together with Sebastiano Ricci and Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini, is considered one of the first Rococo painters. As he worked in half of Europe in the course of his artistic career, Amigoni played an important role in the international spread of the new style. Amigoni was one of the most important Italian portraitists of the first half of the 18th century. He lived and worked in Germany (mainly southern Germany) from 1711-1729, where he became the undisputed pioneer of the Rococo style.

        JACOPO AMIGONI (NAPOLI O VENEZIA 1682 - MADRID 1752)

        Est: €4,000 - €6,000

Jacopo Amigoni (Naples or Venice 1682 - Madrid 1752) Portrait of Maria Barbara of Braganza, Queen of Spain, with Her Dog Oil on canvas 82,5 x 64,5 cm The canvas finds specific stylistic and physiognomy references to the Queen of Spain, with the portrait held in the collection of the Marquis of Canossa. It should be dated to the five years between Amigoni's arrival in Spain in 1747 and his death in Madrid on 22 August 1752.

The artist, who was born in Naples and died in Madrid, studied in Venice and was one of the most important Venetian Rococo painters. He worked in Germany, London, Venice and Madrid and created numerous portraits. The lady is seated upright, turned to the left, with a self-confident but friendly gaze from large, grey-blue eyes towards the viewer. The light falls from the top left, illuminating her face and bust in particular. A small blue scarf lies on the white powdered hair of her wig and she wears a large pearl earring in her ear. The lady is wearing a light-coloured, slightly gold-shimmering silk dress with a lacy, deep and very wide neckline, from the edge of which white lace protrudes. A brooch is attached to the neckline. A wide, blue velvet coat with a purple lining is draped over her right shoulder and rests over her left forearm. The neutral brownish background behind the lady on the right is brightened by the light. Oil on canvas, 85 × 65 cm

Attributed to JACOPO AMIGONI (Venice, 1680/1682 - Madrid, 1752). "Marquis of the Ensenada. Oil on canvas. Presents Puncture. It conserves frame of epoch. Measurements. 83 x 67 cm; 87 x 81 cm (frame). This work follows the models of the portrait of the Marquis de la Ensenada painted by Jacopo Amigoni, c. 1750, which is currently part of the collection of the Prado Museum in Madrid. Although in this particular case the protagonist appears inscribed in a neutral background that provides unique prominence to the figure of the Marquis. Numerous versions of this portrait were made, such as the one in the Musey Nacional d'Art de Catalunya. Zenón de Somodevilla y Bengoechea, I Marquis of Ensenada (Alesanco, near Logroño - 1781), commonly known as the Marquis of Ensenada, was a Spanish statesman. He played a key role in the drafting and implementation of the Great Gypsy Raid, officially known as the General Imprisonment of the Gypsies, which was an attempt to exterminate the Gypsies living in Spain, resulting in the deaths of 12,000 Gypsies. Jacopo Amigoni, also called Giacomo Amiconi, was a late Baroque or Rococo Italian painter, who began his career in Venice, but traveled and was prolific throughout Europe, where his sumptuous portraits were in great demand. At first, Amigoni painted mythological and religious scenes; but as the panoply of his patrons expanded northward, he began to produce many salon works depicting gods in sensual languor or play. His style influenced Giuseppe Nogari. Among his disciples were Charles Joseph Flipart, Michelangelo Morlaiter, Pietro Antonio Novelli, Joseph Wagner and Antonio Zucchi. From 1717, he is documented working in Bavaria, in the castle of Nymphenburg. He returned to Venice in 1726. His Arrebato de Paris is preserved in the Villa Pisani in Stra. From 1730 to 1739 he worked in England, at Pown House, Moor Park Wolterton Hall and at the Covent Garden theater. From there, he helped convince Canaletto to travel to England by telling him of the ample patronage available. In 1747 he left Italy for Madrid, encouraged by Farinelli, who had a court appointment there. He became court painter to Ferdinand VI of Spain and director of the Royal Academy of San Fernando. Presents Puncture. Preserves period frame.

Jacopo Amigoni (1682-1752) Portrait of Maria Barbara of Braganza, Queen of Spain, 1747-1752

        Est: €6,000 - €8,000

Renowned Venetian painter Jacopo Amigoni answered the summons of Ferdinand VI in 1747, beckoning him to assume the esteemed role of court painter in Madrid. During his tenure, he undertook the prestigious task of capturing the likeness of the royal family in a series of esteemed portraits. Maria Barbara of Braganza (1711-1758) was Infanta of Portugal and became Queen of Spain through her marriage to Ferdinand VI. In this private portrait, the queen is depicted with extraordinary empathy. Positioned in a three-quarter view facing left, her countenance exudes dignity and regal poise as she gazes directly at the viewer. Soft illumination from the upper left delicately shapes her features, enhancing the allure of her attire and drapery. Adorned in a light blue silk gown with a yellow lining and a plunging neckline, she exudes understated elegance. A white silk cloak, secured by a brooch at her shoulder and cascading over her knees, is cradled by her left arm. In her right hand, she delicately holds a flower adorned with a sizable pearl. A verdant curtain drapes diagonally across the upper left quadrant of the composition, adding depth to the scene against a neutral grey backdrop. Notably, the absence of opulent regalia suggests that this portrait serves a personal rather than official purpose. Oil on canvas, 81 x 63 cm

PORTRAIT EINES HERREN Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 103,8 x 82,3 cm. In ornamentalem Rahmen. 95 x 73 cm. In vergoldetem ornamental akzentuiertem Rahmen.

A.R. (1301733) (11) Jacopo Amigoni, 1682 Venice – 1752 Madrid THE VIRGIN AND CHRIST CHILDOil on canvas. 79 x 58 cm. BILDNIS EINES FELDHERRN VOM ORDEN „COSTANTIniANO DI SAN GIORGIO“ Öl auf Leinwand. 140 x 90 cm. Zuweisung durch Expertise von Mauro U. Lucco vom 21. Juni 2015. A. R. Jacopo Amigoni: Virgin and Child

        Est: €28,000 - €40,000

AMIGONI, JACOPO 1675 Naples or Venice - 1752 Madrid Title: Virgin and Child. Technique: Oil on canvas. Mounting: Relined. Measurement: 81 x 65cm. Frame/Pedestal: Framed. Provenance: Private ownership, Italy. When one thinks of 18th century Europe, of the compositions of George Frideric Handel, of the sounds of one of the most famous singers of all time, Farinelli, one cannot help but think of one of the artists who brought the spirit of an era to canvas with his colours: Jacopo Amigoni. Born in Naples or Venice, the artist was active and in demand at the great European courts. Apart from a few stays in Italy, especially in Venice between 1740 and 1747 and possibly in Rome, he stayed in Munich from 1717 to about 1727, in England from 1729 to 1739, in Paris in 1736 and at the court of Ferdinand VI in Madrid from 1747, where he died in 1752. His painterly oeuvre includes the interiors of palaces and castles, a lively and expressive series of portraits and paintings with religious, literary and mythological themes, and altarpieces. The present Madonna and Child belongs to a group of works painted by the artist for a private clientele who used this type of painting for devotional purposes. Amigoni painted a whole series with this motif in the course of his career, in some cases as a single figure, in others as part of a composition with several figures. The composition of the present work seems to be influenced by the Venetian Madonnas with Child, especially by the paintings of Giovanni Bellini, in which the Madonna with Jesus stands out against a landscape or black background, often in full length, as in the case of Amigoni's painting. The work thus combines a classical scheme with an earthy colour palette and pastel painting typical of the 18th century. The present work seems to have met with great interest from the public, as the artist produced at least one other smaller version (private collection). We are grateful to Enrico Lucchese, Trieste, who has confirmed the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a high-resolution digital photograph.
