Syollie Amituk, Legend of the Eagle Kidnapping a Woman From Summer Camp, stonecut print, 1974

      Est: $600 - $800

Syollie Amituk, Legend of the Eagle Kidnapping a Woman From Summer Camp, stonecut print, 1974, edition of 50. The legend tells of a girl carried off by an eagle to become his wife. She escapes by braiding caribou sinew into a rope and letting herself down from the cliff to which she was carried. The artists’s name is carved into the stone block. Syollie made this print in 1974 during a workshop conducted by Kanaginak, of Cape Dorset. Syollie did another episode of the legend the following year (Arctic Quebec print catalogue 1975, No. 24). An earlier print (Povungituk print catalogue 1972, No. 18) shows the abduction and yet another episode. When Amituk began making prints in the 1960s, his work often featured simplistic representations of birds and other subject matter rendered in a singular perspective. By the 1970s, Amituk’s work was more accomplished and featured more active scenes, legends, and reflections on the “old way of living.” Amituk also began to incorporate descriptive syllabics and more complex groupings of animals into his work. This print is a perfect example of this time period. Born in Puvirnituq in 1932 on the day of his father’s death, Syollie Amituk came from a family of well known carvers. His older brother, Davidialuk, was one of the communities’ most celebrated artists, as was his cousin Joe Talirunili. Best known for his expressive works on paper, Syollie also produced many sculptures early in his career. He mainly worked with stonecut prints, but also tried his hand at stencils. One of Puvirnituq’s most recognized printmakers, over 30 of Amituk’s prints were included in annual print releases between 1972 and 1986. His work is now included in notable public collections across the country including those of the Glenbow Museum, the University of Alberta Art Collection, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, and the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies.

SYOLLIE AMITUK (1936-1986), E9-829, Povungnituk LEGEND OF THE EAGLE KIDNAPPING AN ESKIMO WOMAN FROM SUMMER CAMP, stonecut, 1974, 25/50, unframed, 24" x 37" - 61 x 94 cm. Provenance: From the Dr. and Mrs. Philip H. Gray Collection of Inuit Art Note: "The legend tell of a girl carried off by an eagle to become his wife. She escapes by braiding caribou sinew into a rope and letting herself down from the cliff to which she was carried (Rasmussen 1959: 285). The artists's name is carved into the stone block. Syollie made this print in 1974 during a workshop conducted by Kanaginak, of Cape Dorset. He [Syollie] did another episode of the legend the following year (Arctic Quebec print catalogue 1975, No. 24). An earlier print (Povungituk print catalogue 1972, No. 18) shows the abduction and yet another episode." -The Inuit Print, exh. cat., from the National Museum of Man (Ottawa, ON), 1977, p. 161, pl. 92
