            ANDERSEN HANS CHRISTIAN: (1805-1875)

            Est: €6,000 - €8,000

ANDERSEN HANS CHRISTIAN: (1805-1875) Danish author, best remembered for his literary fairy tales. A fine pair of autograph fair copy manuscript verses signed ('H. C. Andersen') by Andersen, one page, large oblong 4to (approximately 13 x 10.5'', 32.5 x 26 cm), Paris, 26th April 1943, in Danish and French. To the left side of the page Andersen has penned his verse Soldaten ('The Soldier') in Danish, the four-verse work of four lines each, part of a song cycle, commencing 'Med daempede Hvirvler Trommerne gaae/ Ak, skal vi da aldrig til Stedet naae/ At hank an faae Ro i sin Kiste!/ Jeg troer mit Hjerte vil briste' (Translation: 'Our steps keep time with the muffled drum/ How slow it seems, and how long the march/ O, that he was at peace and everything done/ My heart is pounding'). To the right side of the page the author has penned a French translation of his verse, headed Le Soldat ecrite d'Andersen. Signed and dated by Andersen at the foot of the page. Manuscript verses by Andersen are extremely rare and highly sought after, and the present example is particularly charming. Some light staining and a few small, minor tears to the edges and with a vertical fold to the centre with neat splitting to the upper and lower edges and the whole reinforced with a thin strip of light tape to the verso. G Hans Christian Andersen visited Paris on eight occasions during his lifetime and it was his second visit in 1843 (during which time he penned the present verses) that was perhaps the most important to him personally as he purposefully made it his ambition to meet French writers and artists, and thus succeeded in being accepted into the Parisian literary community. It is more than likely that the present verses were written at the request of one such member of the literary circles in Paris; we know that Andersen penned two similar verses on the same day, 26th April 1943, in the album amicorum of the poet and Romanticist Alfred de Vigny (1797-1863) and his wife Lydia.

(annotated Copenhagen, Denmark, 2nd February 1875 in pencil in an unidentified hand to the verso), in Danish. Andersen, Hans Christian. Die Prinzessin und der Schweinehirt. Typographischer Titel, chromolithographischer Titel und 13 chromolithographische Tafeln mit Illustrationen von Heinrich Lefler. 39,5 x 29,5 cm. Lose Blatt in privater Halbleinen-Mappe mit montierter OVorderdeckel-Illustration. Wien, Gesellschaft für vervielfältigende Kunst, 1897. -- Bilderwelt 463. Stuck-Villa II, 244.

NIELSEN, KAY. 1886-1957. ANDERSEN, HANS CHRISTIAN. 1805-1875. Fairy Tales. London: Hodder and Stoughton, [1924]. Large 4to. Engraved illustrated title page, engraved tailpieces, 16 full-page black & white engravings, and 12 color plates by Kay Nielsen. Publisher's deluxe binding of full vellum, upper cover with gilt-embossed vignette (replicating the title page), flat spine with gilt tree at foot and gilt titling at head, top edge gilt. Front free endpaper with remnants of bookplate, slight splaying to boards, gilt on spine slightly faded. LIMITED DELUXE EDITION, number 111 of 500 copies signed by the artist. This edition of fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen is illustrated by his fellow Dane, Kay Nielsen, whose popularity during the early 20th century 'golden age of illustration' rivaled that of Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac. Born in Copenhagen to a theatrical family, Nielsen studied art in Paris, where he became quite interested in Japanese and Chinese paintings. The influence of those styles can be seen in the color plates here, while the monochrome works are reminiscent of illustrations by Aubrey Beardsley. When the popularity of extravagantly illustrated gift books began to fade in the 1930s, Nielsen moved to California, where he worked for Disney Studios, contributing illustrations for 'Fantasia' and other animated films. ANDERSEN HANS CHRISTIAN: (1805-1875)

            Est: €6,000 - €9,000

ANDERSEN HANS CHRISTIAN: (1805-1875) Danish Author & Poet. Very rare autograph poem, signed `Souvenir de H. C. Andersen´, two pages, 4to, Paris, 26th April 1843, in French and in Danish. Andersen has cleanly written the poem `Le Soldat´ (''The Soldier''), to the left page in Danish, and to the right page in French. The poem corresponds to Andersen´s youth work `Soldaten´ (1830), in Danish. The poem in French contains the sixteen verses, in a French alexandrine form, twelve syllable verses, being Andersen´s version in French, different to the usual published translation of the poem. A very interesting translation by his author, being a poignant poem referring to the execution by squad of a soldier, whose friend is one of the squad members. Stating in part `Que ces tambours voiles résonnent tristement! - Ah! Quelle heure cruelle et quelle horrible attente! - Dans ce monde desert je n´aimais que lui seul - Lui seul que maintennant l´affreuse mort désigne….Neuf fusils ont vomi leur foudre destructeur(sic) - Huit balles ont sifflé plus loin que la victim - huit mains auront tremble craignant peut-être un crime…´ Signed by Andersend at the base, over the two pages displayed. A very rare and attractive double poem by Andersen. Very slightly uneven left edge, with extremely small tear to the upper edge. Centre fold reinforced to the verso. G to VG

- Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.
