VALDEMAR ANDERSEN (1875-1928) DEN INTERNATIONALE LUFTFARTSUDSTILLING. 1927. 33½x24½ inches, 85x62¼ cm. Chr. Cato, [Copenhagen]. Condition A: minor creases in image. Andersen was one of the most prolific Danish poster designers between the wars. He was well known as an illustrator, both for newspapers and books. For this International Aircraft Meeting, he produced a sophisticated graphic of three planes circling a globe upon which a Danish flag is planted at the top. The way he plays with the shadows and evokes the site of the event using only the Danish flag, on a globe that is otherwise unmarked, underscores his exquisite graphic design capabilities. Cato, Copenhagen DESCRIPTION: Significantly, there are no continental outlines on this globe, making tiny Denmark in the North at once isolated and a central focus. This exhibition showed "the most up to date, modern aeronautical equipment, including planes, parachutes, flight instruments and the like. Everything was arranged for public enjoyment, including parachute jumping demonstrations, skywriting and mechanical displays" (Danish Posters/Privatbanken, 8). Though the monoplanes and biplanes shown here appear antiquated to us today, there's nothing old-fashioned about the clever design concept by Denmark's preeminent poster artist. Rare. VALDEMAR ANDERSEN (1875-1928) JOURNALISTFORBUNDETS DANSE-UDSTILLING. Circa 1908. 33 1/4x24 1/2 inches, 84 1/2x62 cm. Condition B+: restored loss along upper left edge. Matted and framed. Andersen is considered to be the "first great Danish poster artist, and is the father of the 20th century Danish poster" (Danish Posters np.). He began his artistic career as an illustrator and went on to become a renowned muralist, creating works for homes, businesses and international exhibitions. Here, Andersen promotes a Dance Exhibition sponsored by the Journalists' Union, who organized social and cultural events around Copenhagen and for whom he designed several posters. Danish Posters 3.

The Danish town of Elsinore is most famous for its landmark Kronburg Castle which was the setting for Shakespeare's Hamlet. Capitalizing on their claim to fame, the town staged Shakespeare plays in the castle to celebrate its 500th anniversary. Andersen was one of the most prolific Danish poster designers between the wars who was well-known as an illustrator for both newspapers and books.
