Period frame. 40" x 31-1/2", framed 52" x 42" Literature: Listed and illustrated in Louisiana Portraits, ed. by Mrs. Thomas Bruns, The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Louisiana, 1975, p. 97. Notes: Irish immigrant Christopher Ryan settled in Ohio in 1832 and married Mary Boyce, the sister of Federal Judge Henry Boyce of Rapides Parish, Louisiana, who was appointed by President Zachary Taylor. Their daughter Anna Catherine Ryan married John Carson Febiger of Pittsburgh in 1849. During the Civil War, Febiger served as an Admiral for the Union forces, and on May 5, 1865, participated in the naval battle with the Confederate ram CSS Albemarle off the coast of North Carolina. Admiral Febiger was commended for his "gallantry and skill" during the battle. Born in Paris, France, Sophie Gengembre Anderson studied painting briefly in 1843 with Alexandre Joseph Steuben. Despite only having minimal formal training, Anderson became an accomplished portrait and genre painter. Looking to avoid the unrest following the French Revolution, the Gengembre family moved in 1849 to America and settled in Cincinnati. While living in Cincinnati, Anderson earned portrait commissions from prominent families in Ohio and Pennsylvania. The family then moved to Manchester, Pennsylvania, where Sophie married the British artist, Walter Anderson. By 1854, the couple had moved to England. Evidently, it was during her time in America that Anderson painted the portrait of "Anna Catherine Ryan Febiger." The young bride was painted seated in an interior setting beside a table of books reflecting that she was well educated. Anderson signed the painting in the signatures of the middle book.

Her work "Elaine" was the first public collection purchase of a woman artist. A world record price for her work of more than 1 Pounds was achieved by "No Walk Today" at Sotheby's London in November 2008. The portrait depicts a young female child in a field of lilac posing with a bundle of lilac in her hands. Previously held in Private Collection. Original Preserved Signature on Back. Anderson' (lower right)oil on canvas50 x 40 1/4in (127 x 102.2cm) Provenance: Private collection, Oklahoma City;By descent to the present owner.Born in Paris, Sophie Gengembre Anderson was the daughter of Charles Antoine Colomb Gengembre, a French architect and his English wife. Her father fostered an artistic environment by his association with a number of artists and intellectuals, and young Sophie developed an interest in the arts from early on. In 1843 she studied briefly with the portrait painter Baron Charles Auguste Steuben, but he soon left for Russia and she continued her studies largely by herself. As the revolution of 1848 broke out, the family left France for the United States and settled in Cincinnati, Ohio. Sophie quickly immersed herself in the local artistic community and by 1849 she exhibited her first portraits at the Western Art Union Gallery. She also worked as an illustrator for different publishers and collaborated with her future husband, the British artist Walter Anderson, on an album of portraits of Protestant Episcopal bishops.The newlywed Andersons moved to London in 1853, where Sophie continued to gain new ground as a successful artist. Her works were shown at the Society of British Artists and the Royal Academy, where she submitted works until 1896. By 1871, the couple moved to the Isle of Capri for the mild climate that was beneficial to Sophie's health. At that time, Capri was a flourishing artists colony where other British artists resided, such as Frederic Leighton and John Singer Sargent, and the couple remained there for the next twenty years. In their later years, the Andersons moved back to England and lived in Cornwall until their deaths two months apart in 1903.Sophie Anderson was mainly known for her depictions of children and genre subjects and by the mid-1850s her paintings were already commanding high prices. She was considered one of the most successful female artists of her generation, with several works acquired by English museums during her lifetime.
