        Johan Andersson Swedish/English, b. 1986 Mariam Ibrahim, 2015

        Est: $12,000 - $18,000

Johan Andersson Swedish/English, b. 1986 Mariam Ibrahim, 2015 Signed J. Andersson and dated 2015 on the reverse Oil on canvas 55 1/4 x 46 inches (140.33 x 116.84 cm) Unframed Provenance: The artist The subject of this portrait by Johan Andersson, Mariam Ibrahim came to international prominence during a string of recent episodes in her native Sudan involving religious persecution. Sentenced to be flogged and later hanged, Ibrahim was found to be guilty under Islamic law for being raised as a Christian, as well as marrying and having a child with a Christian man - a violation, per the Sudanese Muslims, as they refused to recognize her marriage, nor her upbringing by her Christian mother. Held in prison, Ibrahim was shackled at her feet and denied medical care throughout her pregnancy. After a lengthy and arduous battle, Ibrahim was released, at which time she took refuge in the US Embassy located in the Sudan. Ibrahim and her family eventually escaped to Rome, and have now found sanctuary in the United States. Her remarkable story provoked a massive outcry from world government and religious leaders, as well as human rights and religious tolerance organizations. Ibrahim today remains an outspoken figure in the fight against religious persecution. Depicted with her child in this work by Andersson, Ibrahim remains stoic and resolute. Speaking to the work itself, Andersson explains, "I have strived through my art to portray the vulnerable, disenfranchised as well as the courageous who have overcome great difficulties. These are my heroes and who I want to spotlight. Mariam Ibrahim is all of these things and represents a heroic woman the world needs to know more about." This work by Johan Andersson is the first official portrait to be recognized by Mariam Ibrahim. A portion of the sale proceeds will go to Ms. Ibrahim's ongoing charitable projects. C
