"Pierre de Tournai" / Stone sculpture made of Belgian limestone 1989 15x15x15 cm, Würfel; 45x15x45 cm, Gesamtkomposition / 15x15x15 cm, cube; 45x15x45 cm, whole composition Werkverzeichnis / Catalogue Raisonné Echtheitszertifikat, signiert vom Künstler und datiert vom 22. In sehr guter Erhaltung Some parts of the cubes somewhat bumped. From the early 1960s, Carl Andre worked on his minimalist sculptures, with which he revolutionised the concept of sculpture. The rigour of the geometric forms, executed in materials such as iron, copper or stone, and the juxtaposition and repetition of identical elements are astonishing in their simplicity. Andre thus redefined the space around the artwork; in some works, the viewers are even encouraged to walk over the artwork, effectively becoming part of it. From the late 1980s onwards, he often used the stone "Belgica Blue" (Belgian Granite / Belgian Black). The name is misleading because it is not granite, but a dark, blue-black limestone. This limestone, often decorated with fossilised sea lilies, was often used by sculptors; Käthe Kollwitz' sculptural masterpiece "Trauerndes Elternpaar", which she created for the German military cemetery at Vladslo in West Flanders, is worth mentioning alongside many other works. Andre thus used a stone that is considered a "classic" in sculpture to realise his revolutionary new sculptural approach. "Still Blue Wall" consists of nine cubes, each with a side length of 15 cm. Reminiscent of monumental ashlar walls, "Still Blue Wall" surprises with its clear austerity in the smallest of spaces. A typical work by the great sculptor, who died only this year.
