      ANDREA ANDREANI (AFTER GIAMBOLOGNA) Pilate Washing his Hands. Woodcut on two joined sheets, circa 1590. 436x640 mm; 17¼x25¼ inches. The letters GF watermark or counter mark to an unidentified watermark. With small upper and lower margins, trimmed on the border line right edge and on or just inside the border line left edge. A very good impression of this extremely scarce woodcut. Based on Giambologna's (1529-1608) bronze bas-relief in the Soccorso Chapel, Santissima Annunziata, Florence, from circa 1585-87. The black key block only. A chiaroscuro woodcut by Andreani (1540-1623) of only the right half of the scene sold at Christie's, London, December 2, 1987, lot 94. We have not found another impression of the entire composition at auction in the past 30 years. Bartsch 19.

Sonne. -- -- Obwohl der vorliegende Farbholzschnitt nicht das Monogramm des Mantuaner Meisters Andrea Andreani trägt, wird er seit der Zuschreibung Adam von Bartschs klassischerweise seinem Werk zugeordnet. Lange glaubte man, die Vorlage ginge auf Tommaso Luini zurück. Dies konnte ebenso widerlegt werden, wie die Annahme Bernardino Luini hätte sie geliefert. Vielmehr dürfte jedoch dessen Sohn Aurelio Luini für die Vorlage verantwortlich gewesen sein; es existiert ein um 1565 entstandenes Fresko in San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore, das enge Verbindungen zu dem Clair-obscur-Holzschnitt aufweist. - Die insgesamt von drei Stöcken gedruckte Darstellung in einem ganz ausgezeichneten, klaren Druck, meist auf die Einfassung geschnitten. Geringfügig fleckig, einige nur unmerklich ausgebesserte Randläsuren, die Einfassung teils mit (verblasster) Feder ergänzt, sonst insgesamt ganz vorzüglich. Epreuve sur papier vergé (sans filigrane) . Réf.: Bartsch, n°3. Cette estampe monumentale reproduit la célèbre sculpture florentine de Giambologna "L'enlèvement de Sabine". Andrea Andreani est sans aucun doute l'un des pionniers de la gravure sur bois en couleurs au XVIè siècle en Italie. Pour capturer la qualité tridimensionnelle de la sculpture, l'artiste a réalisé trois différentes gravures sur bois d'après le chef-d'œuvre de Giambologna, chacune représentant la sculpture sous un angle différent. 39 x 19,2 cm. Bois gravé en clair-obscur au moyen de 4 bois, de teintes différentes pour chaque sujet, sur des dessins de B. Malpizzi d’après les toiles de Mantegna (réalisées pour F. Gonzague, 4e marquis de Mantoue, à présent conservées à Hampton Court, Londres). Bartsch (vol. 11), p. 101, n° 11. Bonnes épreuves collées sur vergé (sauf la pl. 7). Accidents dont plis, fractures et déchirures à certaines pl. Accidents, taches et reprises dans quelques manques au titre. Manquent les colonnes gravées destinées à séparer les 9 sujets. Rare. Timbre de la collection J.-J. Senon (Lugt non décrit). « Andreani a repris ici le sujet de la suite des tableaux de Mantegna, peints à la détrempe sur toile pour la famille Gonzaga entre 1485-1486 et les années 1490. Mantegna lui-même a gravé plusieurs de ces compositions d’après ses dessins préparatoires, mais Andreani est le premier à avoir reproduit la série complète des Triomphes. Il n’a pas travaillé directement d’après les tableaux de Mantegna, même si ceux-ci se trouvaient à Mantoue à l’époque, et ce jusqu’en 1630, date de leur vente à Charles Ier d’Angleterre. Non ; il a pris comme modèle les grisailles de Bernardo Malpizzi (vers 1556-1623), spécialement exécutés dans ce but, et a réduit le format des tableaux originaux, d’environ 266 x 278 cm, au format des bois grâce à une mise au carreau. […] Les dates de 1598 et 1599 figurant sur les deux planches de la suite indiquent que six années de travail ont été nécessaires à Andreani pour terminer la gravure de ses trente-six bois. » (P.       Theaterprospekt für die Komödie „L’Ortensio“ von Alessandro Piccolomini. Clair-obscur-Holzschnitt von zwei Blatten in Schwarz und Grau-Grün, nach einem Entwurf von Bartolomeo Neroni, gen. Riccio. 26,3 x 35,8 cm. (1589). B. XII, S. 156, 29. Wz. Adler im Kreis mit Krone darüber. Für den ausführenden Holzschneider ließ sich bisher kein Konsens finden. Bartsch vermutete den Sienesischen Künstler Girolamo Bolsi, der auch auf den frühen Abzügen untenr rechts genannt wird. Der Autor des Illustrated Bartsch wiederum sieht den Verleger Andrea Andreani auch als verantwortlichen Schneider. Eindeutig hingegen ist der Urheber des Entwurfs: Bartolomeo Neroni, gen. Il Roccio, hat das Bühnenbild für die um 1560 geschriebene Komödie geschaffen. - Ganz ausgezeichneter, klarer Druck verso mit teils schönem Relief des Linienblocks, mit schmalem Rand an drei Seiten, der untere typographische Schriftteil fehlt, sowie das untere Ende des Bühnenentwurfs mit leichtem Darstellungsverlust abgerissen. Etwas angestaubt und fleckig, kleine Randläsuren, vor allem entlang des unteren Randes hinterfasert, feinen Quetschfalten oben, leichte geglättete vertikale Falzspuren, schwache Knitter- und Gebrauchsspuren, sonst noch gut.
