Signed, titled, dated and inscribed "22¼"H x 30"W" and "(Langston Hughes Series)" in ink on the frame back. From the Langston Hughes Series. Exhibited: Works from the Music, Revival and Langston Hughes Series, ACA Gallery, New York, 1997, with a gallery label on the frame back: Provenance: private collection, New York (1997), acquired from ACA Gallery, New York. This powerful work on paper is an excellent example of Benny Andrews' expressive figurative art, from one of his more celebrated narrative series. Andrews began this series honoring the Harlem Renaissance poet and writer Langston Hughes in 1996 when he rejoined the ACA Gallery. It was shown in his solo exhibition there the following year. Works from this series are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, Smithsonian Institution. Andrews wrote the owners, via a March 3, 1997 ACA Gallery letter, a detailed explanation of the significance of this moving subject: "One of the major themes that Langston Hughes explored in his writings is the Great Migration of African Americans from the South to the North. New Arrival depicts the moment that family members are reunited in Harlem. One of the figures stands, arms out stretched, with his suitcase resting nearby, signalling his recent journey from the South. While the other figure reaches to embrace him and welcome him to his new home. Three children rest on the steps of an apartment building in the background watching the interaction of the adults. These children were born in the North so this reunion does not have the same poignancy for them as it does the adults. This is a moment of celebration, of joy and re-connection with the family as well as a moment of hope for a better life."

After serving in the United States Air Force from 1950-53, he used his G.I. Bill to Study at the Art Institute of Chicago. Consistently a figurative painter, the influence of Abstract Expressionism can be seen in his which was dominating at the time. His practice was an intersection of art and activism, drawing on his experience growing up in a segregated South. In 1968, he joined fellow artist Faith Ringgold to protest the lack of Black artists in the Whitney Museum. His works can be found in collections sweeping across the United States including the Whitney Museum, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC; and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

BENNY ANDREWS (1930 - 2006) Everything That Rises Must Converge. Set of six color etchings and complete text on Rives BFK paper, 2005. 652x499 mm; 25⅝x19⅝ inches (sheet), loose as issued. Edition of 60 numbered copies. Each signed, dated, and numbered 43/60 in pencil, lower margin. Printed by Peter Petengill at Wingate Studio, New Hampshire. Published by the Limited Editions Club, New York. Everything That Rises Must Converge is a collection of color etchings from Benny Andrews inspired by the short stories of Flannery O' Connor in 1961. Both these etchings and short story were inspired by a passage from the work of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. The portfolio chronicles the events surrounding a bus trip that an arrogant young man takes with his bigoted mother. The mother insists on her son's company because, since the system was recently integrated, she doesn't like to ride alone. The tensions in their relationship come to a head when a Black mother and son board the same bus, with the woman wearing an identical hat. O' Connor's primary focus is on the mindset of the woman's college-educated son, who is embarrassed and angered by his mother's condescending racism and who regards the African American woman's indignant response as his mother's justified punishment for a behavior condemned by history. Andrew's images correlate to different scenes from the text.

Ralph Dubin (1919 - 1998) was also a New York figurative painter. The Dubins were friends and fellow residents of Andrews family at the newly opened Westbeth Artist Housing in the 1970s. Mary is a striking portait of photographer Mary Ellen Jones Smith, Benny Andrews's first wife, the mother of their three children. Smith and Andrews were married from 1957 - 1986. The painting is a strong example of Andrew's mid-career work and his innovative portraiture of collaged canvas elements.
