John Andrews (a.k.a., Andreev and Andrew) Modernist Still Life 1935 Oil on Canvas.Measures 35" long 1.75" deep and 42" high. Weight 16 lbs. Andreev was born at Novograd Volinsk, in Russia, and received his early education at the City School there. Fortunately the family did a great deal oi travelling and John was given the opportunity of viewing a large part of eastern Europe through the eyes of youth. It was while living in Warsaw that his earliest interest in art began to manifest itself, and a subsequent tour through Germany and Belgium revealed for his enjoyment. the great museums of those countries. In 1926, the family moved to the United States and Andreev commenced studies at the Massachusetts Art School in Boston. On the completion of his course here, he proceeded to the more specialized Abrascheff School in the same city, and his work soon began to appear in the local galleries. In 1938 he was exhibited at the Provincetown Art Association Annual Exhibition. The sensitivity of this young painter with his deep interest in the new spirit combined with the seriousness of his understanding of the great tradition, soon attracted attention. The progress shown in his well-remembered exhibitions at Attleboro and Springfield was only interrupted by the outbreak of the second World War. After the war Andreev moved to Paris which remained his headquarters. His shows in the Autumn Salons of 1948 and 1950 were very successful. Inevitably, his best work found its way into French collections, particularly the highly praised Etude, purchased by Monsieur Morceau. Mr. Andreev also lived and worked n Florence and Rome while still maintaining his Paris studio, which he considered home. He was good friends with the Ukrainian born American Abstract Artist Norman Canton.
