HERMENEGILDO ANGLADA CAMARASA (Barcelona, 1871 - Pollença, Mallorca, 1959). "Mountains of Boquer, Mallorca". Oil on canvas. Work reproduced in "Anglada-Camarasa" by Francesc Fontbona and Francesc Miralles, Ediciones Polígrafa. pg 284 (num. Da 71). Exhibitions: El Pez Gallery, San Sebastian 1976; Sala Parés, Barcelona, 1976. Measurements: 38 x 51 cm; 57 x 70 cm (frame). Anglada Camarasa is one of the main names of modern Catalan art, and undoubtedly the one who has had more international transcendence of Spanish post-impressionism. He was the youngest painter of the second modernist generation, and is considered an outstanding representative of post-impressionism. He began his training with Tomás Moragas, and later continued at the School of La Lonja in Barcelona as a disciple of Modesto Urgell, whom he always proclaimed as his great master, even though his mature style was very different from Urgell's. During this period of training his work was very different from that of Urgell. In this formative period, Anglada Camarasa's work shows a clear interest in landscape and the human figure. After a brief contact with the group of "Els Quatre Gats", in 1894 he moved to Paris, where his style was influenced by Degas, Toulouse Lautrec, Fauvism and Orientalism. In the French capital he continued his training in the academies of Julian and Colarossi, where he received classes from Laurens, Constant and Girardot. France was for Anglada Camarasa the platform for his international launching. His solo exhibition at the Sala Parés in Barcelona in May 1900, and his time at "Els Quatre Gats", gave Catalan modernism a direct knowledge of what was the most modern painting in Paris, a circumstance that was decisive in the young Picasso's turn towards plastic modernity. Still in Paris, Anglada Camarasa joined the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1904, of which he would be a very active member, participating assiduously in its exhibitions. During this period his international activity multiplied and he participated in the Venice Biennials of 1903, 1905 and 1907, receiving the Gold Medal in the latter year, a prize he also won in the Buenos Aires Biennial of 1910. He had an individual exhibition at the 1929 Barcelona International Biennial. He was named Honorary Academician of the Royal Academy of San Fernando in 1954, and three years later he was awarded the art prize of the March Foundation. Anglada Camarasa was the protagonist of some of the most important moments in the history of art in the first half of the 20th century, and his success from 1900 onwards made his name an international reference. His work was exhibited all over Europe, from Rome to Prague and from Paris to Moscow, and attracted important collectors in the main European capitals, as well as in the United States.

Anglada Camarasa, June 1952, as Proyecto para un retratoAfter training in Barcelona, the Catalan painter Hermenegildo Anglada-Camarasa, moved to Paris in 1894 where he attended the Académie Julian. He painted numerous pictures of Parisian night-life, concentrating on pallet and light effects. His paintings were visibly influenced by Toulouse Lautrec, Gustav Klimt and Kees van Dongen. A significant turning point in his style came in 1909, with the arrival in Paris of impresario Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, featuring Vaslav Nijinski and Anna Pavlova. They became a social and artistic sensation that revolutionised both tastes and customs. Camarasa was deeply moved by the sets and costumes of vibrant oranges, purples and greens, to the extent that from then on the pale shades in his female portraits were replaced by brilliant multicolours. His influence also reached young artists like Pablo Picasso, ten years younger than him and with whom he was in contact during his stay in Montmartre, or María Blanchard, who was his student between 1908 and 1913.The present lot is accompanied by a certificate from F. Fontbona and F. Miralles dated 24 February 1998, no. 403.

HERMENEGILDO ANGLADA CAMARASA (Barcelona, 1871 - Pollença, Mallorca, 1959). Untitled. Charcoal on paper. Signed in the lower margin. Work published in the catalog "Anglada-Camarasa" of Fontbona and Miralles. Measurements: 13 x 9,5 cm; 38 x 34 cm (frame). Charcoal drawing by Anglada Camarasa, resolved with agile and sketchy stroke that dilutes the forms, similar to how in the author's paintings the colors diluted the matter in a new way. It could be a preparatory study for a painting of a nocturnal urban theme, in the light of the street lamp. HERMENEGILDO ANGLADA CAMARASA (Barcelona, 1871 - Pollença, Mallorca, 1959). First version of "Bailarina española". 1906. Oil on canvas. Original reproduced in the catalogue "Anglada-Camarasa" by Francesc Fontbona and Francesc Miralles, Ediciones Polígrafa. pg 74 (num. 170). Measurements: 67 x 66,5 cm; 87 x 87 cm (frame). This portrait of a gypsy woman wearing an embroidered dress and black shawl is a preparatory oil painting for "Bailarina española" (1906), a work reproduced in the "Anglada-Camarasa" catalogue by Fontbona and Miralles. In the preliminary version, all the elements of the definitive work are already present, although it is dominated by a sketchy brushstroke, typical of a study. Paradoxically, Las bailarinas andaluzas was a subject that Camarasa began to deal with when he was outside Spain, already in Paris. In the French capital, flamenco dancing became a plastic pretext for investigating the dissolution of forms, arabesques and feminine sensuality. On this occasion, however, the woman wearing a comb and red ribbon is seated in an armchair, making the brushstrokes less delicate than in other works of his from the same period, as here he focuses his attention on the gaze illuminated by large black eyes, the carmine smile and her shrewd demeanour. Floral embroidery on black silk flashes in all colours between the long fringes of the mantilla. A single foot peeps out from under the colourful fabric, encased in a white slipper. The veined hands with long fingers show the agitation they take on when the dance sets them in motion. Anglada Camarasa is one of the leading names in modern Catalan art, and undoubtedly the most internationally important of Spanish Post-Impressionism. He was the youngest painter of the second modernist generation, and is considered an outstanding representative of Post-Impressionism. During the Spanish Civil War, Anglada Camarasa took refuge in the Monastery of Montserrat, so he painted the mountain on numerous occasions. The present painting conveys with great expressive economy the magical breath of those rocks. It is an almost abstract composition, in which the artist has also stripped himself of the decorativism of his Parisian period and the chromatic brilliance of the Majorcan period. Instead, he immerses us in a silent mysticism, in a recollection that expresses the existential uncertainty of those years. Anglada Camarasa is one of the leading names in modern Catalan art, and undoubtedly the most internationally important of Spanish Post-Impressionism. He was the youngest painter of the second modernist generation, and is considered an outstanding representative of Post-Impressionism. He began his training with Tomás Moragas, and later continued at the La Lonja School in Barcelona as a disciple of Modesto Urgell, whom he always proclaimed to be his great master, although his mature style was very different from Urgell's. During this period of training, Urgell's work was very different from that of La Lonja. During this formative period Anglada Camarasa's work shows a clear interest in landscape and the human figure. After a brief contact with the "Els Quatre Gats" group, in 1894 he moved to Paris, where his style was influenced by Degas, Toulouse Lautrec, Fauvism and Orientalism. In the French capital he continued his training at the academies of Julian and Colarossi, where he was taught by Laurens, Constant and Girardot. France was for Anglada Camarasa the platform for his international launch. His work was placed on a par with that of the great names of the day, such as Klimt and Zorn. He also influenced personalities such as the young Kandinsky and Meyerhold, and figures such as Gorky and Diaghilev admired his painting. He held his first exhibition in Paris in 1898, displaying paintings of artificial colour and form, exuberant arabesque, based chiefly on the themes of glittering nocturnal Paris. On the other hand, his solo exhibition at the Sala Parés in Barcelona in May 1900, and his time at "Els Quatre Gats", gave Catalan modernism a direct knowledge of the most modern painting in Paris, a circumstance that was decisive in the young Picasso's turn towards plastic modernism. Still in Paris, in 1904 Anglada Camarasa joined the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, of which he became a very active member, participating assiduously in its exhibitions. That same year he took part in an exhibition with artists of the Viennese Secession. Around this time he settled in Montmartre, where he opened a painting academy attended by Maria Blanchard and Tito Cittadini, among others. During this period his international activity multiplied and he took part in the Venice Biennials of 1903, 1905 and 1907, receiving the Gold Medal in the latter year, a prize he also won at the Buenos Aires Biennial of 1910. In 1914 he returned to Spain and settled permanently in Pollença, where he devoted himself fully to landscape painting. However, he did not lose sight of the international circuit and took part in the Carnegie Institute exhibition of 1924. That same year he was a guest of honour at the Pittsburgh International Exposition. He also had a solo exhibition at the 1929 Barcelona International Exhibition. He was made an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of San Fernando in 1954, and three years later he was awarded the March Foundation art prize. Anglada Camarasa played a leading role in some of the most important moments in the history of art.

Anglada Camarasa played a leading role in some of the most important moments in the history of art in the first half of the 20th century, and his success from 1900 onwards made his name an international point of reference. His work was exhibited all over Europe, from Rome to Prague and from Paris to Moscow, and attracted major collectors in the main European capitals as well as in the United States.

Work reproduced in "Anglada Camarasa", Francesc Fontbona, Francesc Miralles, Ed. Polígrafa, pg 269, n.41. With label on the back from the Banco de Santander de Mallorca on the occasion of the 1984 exhibition entitled "Twenty Mallorcan painters", in which this painting was included. Measurements: 38 x 40 cm; 60 x 63 cm (frame). This important painting belongs to Anglada Camarasa's so-called "Mallorcan period". After living for several decades in Paris, where he became a stellar figure of the Belle Époque, knowing how to forge his own language, colourful and exuberant, he was forced to take refuge in Mallorca with the outbreak of the First World War. What he had learnt in that first modernist period, which he focused on depictions of women, took a turn on the Balearic island towards themes free of human figures, preferably landscapes, and impregnated with a singular delicacy, as in this painting. He cut out the landscape in a daring manner, placing vine arbours, garden corners or gnarled branches in the foreground. The mauve of the flowers and the green of the leaves compete in chromatic intensity. The line is full of agitation and generous in matter, endowing the blossoming tree with sensuality and Mediterranean fragrance. Anglada Camarasa is one of the leading names in modern Catalan art, and undoubtedly the most internationally important of Spanish Post-Impressionism. He began his training with Tomás Moragas and later continued at the Escuela de La Lonja in Barcelona as a disciple of Modesto Urgell. During this period of training, Anglada Camarasa's work shows a clear interest in landscape and the human figure. HERMENEGILDO ANGLADA CAMARASA (Barcelona, 1871 - Pollença, Mallorca, 1959). "Landscape". Pencil and chalk on paper. Certified by Josep Maria Folch i Torres in the lower right-hand corner. Measurements: 14 x 22 cm; 31 x 38 cm (frame). Anglada Camarasa is one of the leading names in modern Catalan art, and undoubtedly the most internationally important of Spanish post-impressionism. He was the youngest painter of the second modernist generation, and is considered an outstanding representative of Post-Impressionism. He began his training with Tomás Moragas and later continued at the La Lonja School in Barcelona as a disciple of Modesto Urgell, whom he always proclaimed to be his great master, although his mature style was very different from Urgell's. During this period of training, his work was very different from that of Urgell. He held his first exhibition in Paris in 1898, displaying paintings of artificial colour and form, exuberant arabesque, based chiefly on the themes of glittering Paris by night. On the other hand, his solo exhibition at the Sala Parés in Barcelona in May 1900, and his time at "Els Quatre Gats", gave Catalan modernism a direct knowledge of the most modern painting in Paris, a circumstance that was a determining factor in the young Picasso's turn towards plastic modernism.

HERMENEGILDO ANGLADA CAMARASA (Barcelona, 1871 - Pollença, Mallorca, 1959). "The crown tango". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 62.5 x 80 cm; 81.5 x 99 cm (frame). Provenance: Mario Mercatali (Buenos Aires, para 1955); Sold at Sotheby's Madrid on December 16, 1987 (lot 45); bought at Sotheby's by the father of the current owner, inherited by descendants. Exhibitions: Buenos Aires, Galerías Velázquez, "Exposición homenaje a la Institución Cultural Española", 1955 (as a study for "El Tango de la corona"). Bibliography: FONTBONA, Francesc & MIRALLES, Francesc, "Anglada Camarasa", Madrid, 1982, p. 1981. Da99 (catalogued and illustrated) / LLUL, Ramón, "El Tango de la Corona se incorpora al Museo Anglada Camarasa", "Baleares", Palma de Mallorca, 6 July 1971 (illustrated). The work presents a landscape of simplified and schematized elements, composed on the basis of clear planes, differentiated thanks to the color, and generally maintaining the horizontality, in clear contrast with the marked but small (usually) vertical lines of the constructions of the city that emerges in the background, remotely recalling works such as the well-known landscapes of El Greco in Toledo, with the usual differences between the two. In the foreground and at a large size, but maintaining the schematism, are five ladies (four seated and one dancing, in the center of the circle) and two men, playing their respective guitars. The dancing female figure stands out both with the palette chosen for her, similar to that of the background, and with the lines created by one of the guitars and the arms of the seated women. Anglada Camarasa is one of the leading names in modern Catalan art, and undoubtedly the one who has had the most international transcendence of Spanish post-impressionism. He began his training with Tomás Moragas, and later continued at the Escuela de La Lonja in Barcelona as a disciple of Modesto Urgell. After a brief contact with the group "Els Quatre Gats", in 1894 he moved to Paris, where his style was influenced by Degas, Toulouse Lautrec, Fauvism and Orientalism. In the French capital he continued his training in the academies of Julian and Colarossi, where he received classes from Laurens, Constant and Girardot. France was for Anglada Camarasa the platform for his international launching. His work was compared to that of the great names of the time, such as Klimt or Zorn. He also influenced personalities such as the young Kandinsky or Meyerhold, and figures such as Gorky or Diaghilev admired his painting. In 1898 he made his individual debut in Barcelona, obtaining great success. After a short period in Valencia, in 1904 he returned to Paris and settled in Montmartre, where he opened a painting academy attended, among others, by Maria Blanchard and Tito Cittadini. During these years he participated in the Venice Biennials of 1903, 1905 and 1907, receiving the Gold Medal in the latter year, a prize he also won in the Buenos Aires Biennial of 1910. In 1914 he returned to Spain and settled permanently in Pollença, fully dedicated to landscape painting. However, he did not lose sight of the international circuit and participated in the Carnegie Institute exhibition of 1924. That same year he was a guest of honor at the Pittsburgh International Exposition. He also had a solo exhibition at the 1929 Barcelona International Exhibition. He was named Honorary Academician of the Royal Academy of San Fernando in 1954, and three years later he was awarded the art prize of the March Foundation.Anglada Camarasa lived as a protagonist some of the most important moments in the history of art in the first half of the twentieth century, and his success from 1900 onwards made his name an international reference. His work was exhibited all over Europe, from Rome to Prague and from Paris to Moscow, and attracted important collectors in the main European capitals, as well as in the United States.
