Great colourful image designed by the Russian artist, Yuri Annenkov (Georges/Georgii Annenkov; 1889-1974), featuring three dancers wearing traditional costume. Irina Grjebina (1907-1994) was a French/Russian choreographer and dance teacher. She founded the Russian School of Choreography in Paris in 1938 and the Ballet Russe troupe in 1946 with her sister Lyla. Printed in Paris. Large size. Good condition, folds, creasing, tears, minor staining, printing errors. Country of issue: France, designer: G. Annenkov, size (cm): 158x120, year of printing: 1940s.

(H) x 18 in. (W) 55.5 cm (H) x 45.6 cm (W) lurii Pavlovich Annenkov (1889-1975), was a painter and graphic artist, designer for theatre and cinema and master of book design. Born during his parents' exile in Petropavlovsk in Kamchatka, Annenkov enrolled at the University of St Petersburg in 1908, at the same time attending lessons in the studio of Savelii Zeidenberg and Ivan Tsionglinskii, before studying in Paris under Maurice Denis and FÃ©lix Valloton. On his return to Russia, Annenkov became an active member of artistic life in Petrograd. As early as 1913 Annenkov was involved in the theatre, collaborating with Nikolai Evreinov, Nikolai Kul'bin and Ivan Puni, as well as other artists such as Mstislav Dobuzhinski and Vladimir Shchuko. He also experimented with book illustrations and created designs for magazine covers. The early years of the Revolution, despite practical difficulties, proved extremely productive for many artists who found the atmosphere stimulating and dynamic. At this time he concentrated on graphic work in particular illustrations for books and satirical journals. In addition, he also planned the decoration of towns for revolutionary mass festivals;Â participating in the 1st May celebrations in Petrograd and the celebration of the 7th November in Moscow in 1918, and 'The Taking of the Winter Palace' in Uritskii (formerly Palace) Square on 7thÂ November 1921. However, Annenkov is perhaps best-known for his work as a portraitist, depicting political figures such as Vladimir Lenin, Leon Trotskii, Anatoli Lunacharski, Vladimir Antonov-Ovsenko and Grigorii Zinov'ev, as well as the most influential figures from the Arts, including Maksim Gor'kii, Vsevolod Meierhol'd, Anna Akhmatova, Boris Pasternak and Alexandre Benois. His unique painterly technique based on cubist forms and the vibrant colours associated with the Russian Avant-garde earned him the repuation as one of the most sought-after portrait painters in post-Revolutionary Russia. The sitter, Alexandre Benois, a central theorist, organiser and creative practitioner of the World of Art movement, belongs to the category of major Russian cultural activists in whose orbit Annenkov moved. Stylistically, the portrait belongs to the body of work in which Annenkov experimented with media in order to achieve stylistic freedom of plane and form. Benois was born into a cultured family of French and Italian extraction, living in St Petersburg. His father, Nikolai Leontevich Benua, was an Academician and Architect. He attended school with Konstantin Somov and other future World of Art colleagues. He studied art under his brother, Albert and as a student at St Petersburg Academy of Arts in the late 1880s and, during this period, was much impressed by a performance of Wagner's ring cycle. In 1890, he travelled to Germany and, in Munich, saw the works of BÃ¶cklin, Lenbach and Menzel. The same year, he enrolled at St Petersburg University, where, contemporaneously with Sergei Diaghilev (see cat.Â 50), he studied law, and, the following year, began showing his work with Russian exhibiting societies. Shortly afterwards, he began to write as an art historian in Russian and German publications and, at this time, he visited Germany, Switzerland and Italy. In 1895, he embarked on careers both as theatre designer and curator of art and, by 1896, a year spent in Paris, working on his Louis XIV painting series at Versailles, the full range of his artistic abilities was engaged both in Russia and in Western Europe. During the late 1890s, with Sergei Diaghilev, Benois was the main organiser for the burgeoning World of Art movement, exhibiting with the group, publishing in and editing the magazine and vigorously participating in the movement's many activities. In 1901, he founded the Journal, Art Treasures of Russia and acted at its editor till 1903. In 1905, he settled in Paris and, the following year, saw his work included in Diaghilev's Exhibition of Russian art at the 1906Â Salon d'automne. From 1907, Benois was Editor of several prestigious art publications in Russia and an activist of distinguished art and architectural societies. Between 1909 and 1914 he was Artistic Director of the Moscow Arts Theatre. After the Revolution, he was editor of a children's book publishing house and, from 1918 to 1926, Keeper of French and English paintings at the Hermitage Museum. He participated in bolshevik and foreign exhibitions of Russian art, including the First Russian Art Exhibition in Berlin (1922). From 1901 to 1959, Benois executed numerous theatre designs, first for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes and, later, for Ida Rubinstein's company. Subsequently, he designed for productions at the Moscow Art Theatre and other theatres in Moscow and Petrograd. From the 1920s, he contributed theatre and opera designs in London, Paris and Milan. During the 1950s, he produced numerous designs for La Scala, Milan and, between 1924 and 1945, also produced film designs.
