THOMAS ANSHUTZ Figures on a Terrace * Dock Scene. Oil on board, double-sided, circa 1900. 190x251 mm; 7 1/2x10 inches. Provenance: Private collection, New York. Anshutz (1851-1912) was a native of Kentucky and studied in Philadelphia with Thomas Eakins, whom he eventually succeeded as the director of drawing and painting classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Like Eakins, Ansutz painted in a naturalistic style that became more impressionistic over the course of his career. Numerous artists studied under Anshutz, including George Luks, Charles Demuth, John Sloan, Charles Sheeler, Everett Shinn, John Marin, William Glackens, and Robert Henri.

oil on board; signed lower right 13 x 9 in. (33.02 x 22.86 cm.), Frame: 21 x 18 in. (53.34 x 45.72 cm.) Thomas Anshutz studied in Paris at the Académie Julian before moving, in 1875, to Philadelphia. Here he enrolled in a class at the Philadelphia Sketch Club, taught by Thomas Eakins. Eakins became a tremendous influence on Anshutz' early career, though he created his own personal variations, not just faithful reproductions of Eakins' work. Anshutz was a portrait, figurative, and landscape painter and his greatest work, "Iron Workers at Noontime" is praised as a precursor to realism. He captured the mundane, harsh, everyday activities of the industrial working class and the painting was considered quite shocking at the time. Anshutz went on to become a long-time teacher at the Philadelphia Academy of the Fine Arts, and is perhaps best known for his influence on his students.

Amongst his well-known students were Daniel Garber, John Sloan, George Luks, Robert Henri, Charles Sheeler, William Glackens, John Marin and Charles Demuth. A realist painter celebrated for his formal portraits of figures in interiors, Anshutz was also a gifted and accomplished landscapist, as evidenced by the painterly Summer House on the Marsh, depicting a moored boat on a placid marsh in the foreground, grassy marsh banks in the mid ground, and cottages in the distance.

He studied at the National Academy of Design under Lemuel Wilmarth and later at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art under Thomas Eakins and Christian Schussele. He joined the faculty at the Pennsylvania Academy in 1881 where his students included Robert Henri, John Marin, Frederick Judd Waugh and Charles Demuth. His paintings are found in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C
