Parigi, 1802 - Boulogne sur Seine, 1880 Marina con barca in secca e pescatori Firmato J Gudin in basso a destra Olio su tela, cm 41X58 Gudin è stato uno dei pittori di marine più apprezzati del XIX secolo: studia con Anne-Louis Girodet e Antoine-Jean Gros, ma ben presto si avvicina ai maestri romantici Delacroix e Gericault. Nel 1824 vincerà una medaglia d'oro divenendo uno dei primi pittori di marine alla corte di Luigi Filippo di Francia e di Napoleone III. Nominato barone dal re e incaricato di produrre novanta dipinti sulla storia navale francese per la Reggia di Versailles, dal 1837 inizierà ad esporre le sue opere al Salon di Parigi, all'Accademia di Dresda, alla Royal Academy di Londra e nel 1871 a Vienna. Nominato poi membro dell'Accademia di Berlino, riceve la Croce della Legione d'onore in Francia. Sue opere sono conservate al Louvre, all'Hermitage e al Museo delle Belle Arti di Bordeaux; un suo dipinto raffigurante una Marina di Genova è conservato nel Reale Museo di Capodimonte a Napoli. In tutti i suoi dipinti la luce e l'atmosfera assumono un ruolo fondamentale, soprattutto nella rappresentazione di terribili naufragi o tempeste imminenti. Nella luminosa tela qui presentata l'artista combina una tavolozza elegante e delicata attraverso pennellate precise, creando così un'atmosfera armoniosa.

JEAN ANTOINE HOUDON, BRONZE BUST OF DIANA GODDESS

An antique bronze bust representing Diana the hunter goddess after Jean Antoine Houdon, French, 1741to 1828. Diana is depicted with the side turned wearing a dress on the shoulder gown with elegant drapery and crowned by a crescent head. Bearing an impressed signature: Houdon, under the right shoulder. The surface is covered with a nice brown and greenish patina. Prominent in France during the Enlightenment period of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Jean-Antoine Houdon was a neoclassical sculptor, especially noted for his marble portrait busts and statues. His subjects included Americans Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Robert Fulton, and among his French subjects were Denis Diderot, Jean Jacques Rousseau, Louis XVI and Napoleon Bonaparte. For King Louis, he did numerous statues for the gardens of Versailles. Houdon was a continuous exhibitor at the French Salon, and works included many of the above mentioned personages as well as Prince Henry of Prussia, Catherine of Russia, Voltaire, the playwright Moliere and Marshal de Tourville. Bennet, contemporary half calf, The Hague, Jean Neaulme, 1747; Lettres sur l'Électricité, 2 vol.., engraved frontispiece & 8 folding plates, contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt, Paris, H.LGuerin & L.F.Delatour, 1760, a little rubbed; and 3 others by the same, 8vo et infra (6) ⁂ Nollet is considered the father of experimental physics in France. He was the first Frenchman to experiment using the Leyden jar, and one of the first to associate lightning with electricity. The frontispiece in the second work depicts his demonstration of the "electric boy", when a boy was suspended by silk cords and electrified, producing sparks and attracting objects.

Jean Antoine Théodore Gudin (1802 Paris - 1880 Boulogne-sur-Seine) Felsige Meeresküste Mit schnellem, lockerem Duktus gemalte Landschaftsimpression, bei der den Künstler die bizarrren, diagonal in den Himmel ragenden Felsformation reizten. Gudin erregte schon 1822 mit seinen Marinebildern Aufsehen im Pariser Salon, er avancierte zu einem erfolgreichen und auch international tätigen Marinemaler seiner Zeit. Seit den 1830er/40er Jahren erhielt er Aufträge von König Louis Philippe v. Frankreich, Zar Nikolaus I. v. Russland und Kaiser Napoleon III. von Frankreich. 1841 wurde Gudin Offizier in der Ehrenlegion, 1845 erhielt er in Berlin den Orden "Pour le Mérite". Öl/Papier, alt auf verso mit Leinwand bespannter Sperrholzplatte kaschiert. Verso mit Stempel "T. GUDIN" und Nr. "175". 34 cm x 42 cm. Rahmen. (Marsiglia, 1756 - Aix en Provence, 1844) Paesaggio con veduta di Tivoli Olio su tela, cm 76,5X100 Il dipinto raffigura la veduta di Tivoli, una delle località più visitate durante il Grand Tour. Le antiche vestigia classiche, i pittoreschi monumenti e il fascino delle cascate, deliziavano paesaggisti e forestieri non digiuni di storia e letteratura antica. In questa campagna la nostra memoria vede più dei nostri occhi sentenziava nel 1740 Horace Walpole, alludendo all'ascendente che esercitava il passato sulla sensibilità di chi si addentrava nella rigogliosa campagna romana, evocando l'Arcadia, le poesie d'Orazio e Virgilio. Nell'età barocca, il sito era la meta prediletta di Claude Lorrain e Nicolas Poussin, interpreti fra i migliori dell'ideale classico che, secondo Jonathan Skelton, avevano entrambi desunto da quei luoghi. Gaspar van Wittel ha dipinto otto diverse vedute della città e delle cascate formate dall'Aniene e prima di lui Gaspard Dughet e il van Bloemen- ma la seduzione del luogo proseguì sino all'età neoclassica. Costantin, dopo gli studi all'Accademia di Marsiglia, si recò a Roma dove soggiornò fino al 1813 ed entro o subito dopo si colloca l'esecuzione di questa veduta.
