          STEPHEN ANTONAKOS Untitled.

          Est: $3,000 - $5,000

STEPHEN ANTONAKOS Untitled. Sewlage with fabric, wood and oil on canvas, 1961. 765x615 mm; 30x24 inches. Signed and dated in oil, verso. Provenance: Gift from the artist to the current owners, private collection, New York. Sewlage was the term given by Antonakos (1926-2013) to describe his sewn and stretched fabric collages. During the early 1950s, Antonakos frequented New York's art museums, where he became inspired by Alberto Burri (1915-1995), especially the artist's fabric Sacchi works. In 1956, Antonakos had given up painting in favor of creating constructions and collages with found objects. In 1958, Antonakos had his first solo exhibition, "Collages," at Avant-Garde Gallery, New York featuring these works. Unlike Burri's Sacchi, which had first inspired the Sewlages, Antonakos used an array of colorful fabrics and textures, sourced from used clothing and scraps of materials, including furniture and cork letters, close to his studio in New York's garment district.

Complete set of 14 color lithographs on Arches buff paper with collage and presentation instructions, 1977. 580x340 mm; 22 3/4x13 3/8 inches (sheets), full margins. Each sheet signed and numbered 8/40 in pencil, lower margin, and signed and dedicated in ink, on the instruction card. Printed by Styria Studio, Inc., New York. Published by Peder Bonnier, New York. Framed according to the artist's instructions. Very good impressions. During his experiments in neon, Antonakos (1926-2013) had come to prefer incomplete geometric shapes, as they were more complex and allow the viewer to complete the form, working in Gestalt. In the summer of 1977, Antonakos exhibited his 50x25 foot outdoor neon installation Incomplete Neon Square on the side of the Fridericianum at Documenta 6 in Kessel, Germany. After the debut of his installation, Antonakos worked with printer Craig O'Brien at Styria Studio to create the present suite of lithographs. On each sheet edge that was not torn by Antonakos, O'Brien printed a narrow band of neon red. He created several Incomplete Square neon works from the mid-1970s through the early 1980s.

Both signed, dated, titled, inscribed "a.p." in pencil, verso. Provenance: The artist to the package recipients, private collection, New York. While living in Fresno, California as an artist resident, Antonakos (1926-2013) wrote to artists in New York requesting that they put something in a package and mail it to him. A conceptual piece, Packages was born. Antonakos exhibited these packages, from Christo, Sol LeWitt, and Robert Ryman, among others, just as the senders shipped them to him, though he never opened them. When Antonakos returned to New York in 1972, he mailed approximately two dozen packages, with the contents known only to him, to his friends and associates with instructions for opening them on or after a certain date or occurrence (or not at all). Antonakos experimented further with the concept of concealment, the unknown, and choice with other package projects, including one in 1975, when he put a package in a freezer with the caveat that it would only be opened if the appliance broke down.

Signed and inscribed with the date in pencil, on the back panel. Provenance: Acquired from the artist by current owners, private collection, New York. Exhibited: "Antonakos: Pillows (1962-1963)," Byron Gallery, New York, 1964, and Meredith Long & Co., Houston, organized by the Contemporary Art Museum, Houston, April 9-23, 1971, number 49 (illustrated); "Stephen Antonakos: Pillows, 1962-1963," Lori Bookstein Fine Art, New York, February 14-March 16, 2013 (illustrated). With—DREAM, color screenprint on linen pillowcase, 1965. 340x443 mm; 13 1/2x17 1/2 inches. Edition of approximately 100. Signed in ink, lower right. Published by Byron Gallery, New York. By the 1960's, Antonakos (1926-2013) was known in his neighborhood as a "garbage collector" and in the introduction written by Naomi Spector for the 1971 Houston show, Antonakos recalled that "I had found some pillows in the street and a lady gave me a couple more. Another lady kept giving me boxes of buttons from where she worked— hundreds of them! They were very exciting to me. And— one day— I said to myself, 'Why couldn't I sew them on these Pillows.'" Influenced by his work in collage and assemblage, he created the Pillows during a fourteen month period, starting in September 1962. This work ran parallel to Claes Oldenberg's creation of his soft sculptures, though Antonakos was not aware of these at that time. The pillows were transformed with tears, cuts, paint, and applied found objects (sometimes stuffed with them), illustrating the artist's belief that a pillow, where one rests their head on while asleep, are keepers of secrets and dreams. The present lot is what Spector would call one of Antonakos' "aggressive" and "female" pillows, with projecting nails, though admittedly, "there is much beauty in the mass formed of the repeated, gleaming nails."

          STEPHEN ANTONAKOS Untitled Construction.

          Est: $7,000 - $10,000

STEPHEN ANTONAKOS Untitled Construction. Found metal and wood elements, dowels, paint and sewn fabric, 1961. 1689x584 mm; 66 1/2x23 inches. Embroidered initials, lower right recto, and signed and dated "8/61" in ink, verso. Provenance: Gift from the artist to the current owners, private collection, New York. While working as a commercial illustrator in the late 1940s and 1950s, Antonakos (1926-2013) frequented New York's art museums and having seen Robert Rauschenberg's (1925-2008) combines, became inspired to create his own art incorporating found objects and painting. By 1956, Antonakos had abandoned painting, and instead through the 1960s, focused on three dimensional works, including constructions, Sewlages, and the Pillows series. For his constructions, Antonakos used salvaged objects from the trash and curbs of his neighborhood, including buttons, fabrics, dowels, and furniture. Antonakos first exhibited his constructions at the landmark shows "New Forms- New Media I-II" at the Martha Jackson Gallery in New York in 1960, alongside assemblage works by Jean Arp (1886-1966), Lee Bontecou (1931-2022), Jim Dine (born 1935) and Claes Oldenburg (1929-2022).

          Est: €1,000 - €1,500

"54 #4" -- Feder in Schwarz auf Transparentpapier. 1977. -- 51 x 38 cm. -- - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

Stephen Antonakos American, (1926-2013) Untitled, 1961 mixed media watercolor / gouache on paper with red top pin signed and dated lower right. Provenance: Purchased from Benjamin Gallery, Buffalo, NY. Private collection, Indianapolis, IN. Biography from the Archives of AskArt: Born in Greece and settling in New York City, Stephen Antonakos became an artist whose primary medium was neon tubing. His pieces are geometric and are intended to change their environments into theaters of light. He was inspired by the purity of color of neon tubing in 1961, while walking through the Garment District at night. Although he associated with Pop Artists, he did not refer to commercialism in his subject matter. He got special attention as an artist when he exhibited his assemblage in 1960 at the Martha Jackson Gallery with Jim Dine and Claes Oldenberg and in 1964, he exhibited in a New Realism exhibit with Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.
