    Est: £6,000 - £8,000

PIETRO ANTONIANI (MILANO 1740/50 – 1805) Eruption of Vesuvius in 1767 oil on canvas, unframed 52.5 x 101.5 cm (20 3/4 x 40 in) The present work is an especially fine example by landscape painter Pietro Antoniani of a genre inspired by Pierre-Jacques Volaire and Joseph Wright of Derby, who both excelled in depicting both the drama and the sublime of the Vesuvius erupting in 1767. The tranquillity of the sea stands in stark contrast to the violence of the vulcano. The white hot jet of molten liquid hurled from the heart of the volcano is framed by dense black clouds, and a further wreath of smoke streams out across the bay, not quite obscuring a brilliant full moon. Figures, scarcely visible in the sombre foreground, add a human element to the composition and stress man's insignificance before the sublime grandeur of nature.

A VIEW OF THE ISLAND OF ISCHIA; A VIEW OF THE BAY OF NAPLES FROM THE PUNTA DI POSILLIPO measurements note the former: 31.7 by 48.7 cm.; 12 1/2 by 19 1/8 in. the latter: 31.4 by 49 cm.; 12 3/8 by 19 1/4 in. a pair, both oil on canvas Quantity: 2 NOTE Another version of the view of the Bay of Naples was sold in these Rooms, 11 December 1991, lot 6, when it formed part of a series of six views of Naples and its environs. This view was signed and inscribed on the reverse describing the view in greater detail thus: veduta della punta di Posillipo del Lazzaretto, Nissita, Pozzuolo, Baja, Capomiseno, Procida ed Ischia. Although Milanese in origin, Antoniani is thought to have trained in Naples under Antonio Joli, whose highly successful brand of vedute clearly strongly influenced his own. Many of his works are on a small scale such as the present pair, and found a ready market among British visitors to Naples, including the famous collectors Henry Blundell and Charles Townley. Antoniani also specialised in views of the eruptions of Vesuvius. See E. Martini, "Notizie su Pietro Antoniani milanese a Napoli", in Paragone, no. 181, 1965, pp. 81-86.
