Sabong signed and dated 1985 (lower right) oil on canvas 24" x 30" (61 cm x 76 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot The 20th-century Philippine art scene witnessed a significant shift in art style. The idyllic pastoral scenes that once dominated the artists’ canvases were gradually changed to fragmented and abstract compositions. Nevertheless, despite this shift in style, many of the subjects of these works remained the same: the Philippines and the Filipinos. One of the awardees of the inaugural Thirteen Artist Awards by the CCP in 1970, Angelito Antonio was among the most influential artists who embraced Modernism; his canvases always boast of his compelling love and affection for the Philippines. Painted in 1985, this masterpiece captures a scene before a cockfight, a recurring theme in Antonio’s work. Two native folks, possibly preparing for a match, are depicted, one smoking tobacco while holding and conditioning his rooster. Inherently Filipino, this oil on canvas work is a vivid portrayal of the allure of provincial life and culture, sabong or cockfighting being one of the infamous leisurely activities in the countryside. A canvas filled with geometric planes and bright, kaleidoscopic hues contrasted by black outlines and shadows, Sabong is undoubtedly crafted by Antonio’s expert hands, perfectly demonstrating his exceptional artistry, befitting the country’s last pillars of Modernism. PROPERTY FROM THE DON J. ANTONIO ARANETA COLLECTION Candle Vendor signed and dated 1966 (lower left) pen and ink on paper 20" x 26" (51 cm x 66 cm) León Gallery wishes to thank Marcel Antonio for confirming the authenticity of this lot WRITE UP Angelito Antonio’s nascent cubism has often been compared to National Artist Vicente Manansala. Antonio's composition professor at the University of Santo Tomas, it was clear that the eminent artist had greatly influenced Antonio. However, Antonio veered from Manansala's classically adhering anatomy and turned his figures into more aggressive shapes. His vendors, cockfighters, and familial units all show the vibrant Filipino culture, portrayed in his strong vivid art style. His vendors take center stage in his 1966 Candle Vendor. Through pen and ink, Antonio painstakingly shades and creates these women as they hold onto their wares, the classically Antonio elongated visage of these women occupying the majority of the space. Behind them, a bustle of the crowd is seen. Despite the lack of color, Antonio's knowledge of shades and shadows breathes life into the piece, depicting the vibrancy of the culture even when the work itself is devoid of colors. With Candle Vendor situated near the start of his career, it serves as a perfect vantage point for the illustrious career he would sustain for more than five decades. One of the pillars of Philippine Modernism, his adherence to modernism’s dynamic expression landed him in the annals of the history of Philippine visual art, a place he occupies with many other lauded Filipino modernists. Family signed and dated 1984 (lower left) oil on canvas 24" x 30" (61 cm x 76 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot PROVENANCE: Alpadj Gallery One look at Angelito Antonio’s magnificent body of work shows his immense interest in Philippine culture. Described as "one of the last few living modernist masters of Philippine art" by the managing director of Galerie Joaquin Jack Teotico, Antonio’s place in Philippine art history was cemented when he was included in one of the earliest batches of the Thirteen Artist Awardees from the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) in 1970. Almost 15 years after this prestigious award, Antonio’s dexterity shows no signs of slowing down with his 1984 Family. In it, Antonio’s striking colors and unique approach to figurative distortion create an interesting visual image. Hues of red, yellow, and orange meld together, the warmth juxtaposed by the pure black used as shadows. Two figures occupy the forefront, a husband and a wife. A basketful of fruits is on the wife’s head, one hand balancing the tray and another holding a child; the husband meanwhile cradles a rooster to his chest. They create the quintessential image of a rural Filipino family, depicting the quaint family unit including the household animal that is just as important as the brood. Primarily a folk genre artist, Antonio’s usual subject matter ranges from cockfighters to vendors to family, all depicted in his bright and intense color scheme that is as vibrant as it is refreshing. His career spans more than half a century, his works aggressive and expressionist with an infusion of intricate Filipino values. In Family, Antonio portrays the intertwining threads of family, community, heritage, and harmony all the while infusing the piece with a Filipino vibrancy that resonates even four decades after its creation. Untitled (Ilaw ng Tahanan) signed and dated 1983 (lower right) oil on canvas 35" x 36" (89 cm x 91 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot Thirteen Artists Awardee Angelito Antonio’s rendition of the Filipina as a mother uses his signature vibrant and often dramatic color scheme to depict the subject. In shades of black and sepia, Antonio’s unique composition of the scene echoes that of his professor in UST Vicente Manansala; however, while Manansala’s figure retains its shape despite its cubism, Antonio distorts his with far more aggression. His hues show sharp delineation, cutting a striking figure as the colors start and end on an abrupt note. Antonio's dexterity as a folk genre artist needs no introduction. His depictions of the common Filipino – from the cockfighters to the vendors down to the family unit – are imbued with the vibrancy that is inherent in the culture he finds himself in. This work puts into the forefront the backbreaking endeavor of the mother as the shining light of the family. (Hannah Valiente)

Birdman signed and dated 1975 (lower right) oil on canvas 36" x 36" (91 cm x 91 cm) PROVENANCE Private collection, Manila WRITE UP: When Angelito Antonio created this captivating piece titled Birdman, he had been teaching at the University of Santo Tomas College of Architecture and Fine Arts, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1962. Antonio was also at the peak of his career, with his name and career showered with numerous accolades, including a first honorable mention nod at the 1968 Art Association of the Philippines (AAP) Annual Competition and Exhibition and a “Best Work” recognition at the 1972 AAP Annual. Perhaps what stands out in this particular piece is Antonio’s use of multiple perspectives, which aids in conveying a brimming atmosphere characterized by a bustling preoccupation with the necessity of subsistence. Not only do the swarming birds locked in cages that are being sold by the man evoke a sense of delicate commotion, but it also brings out a sense of vulnerability, an allusion to the ordinary Filipinos’ everyday situation. In contrast with the warm yellows, which elicit feelings of joy and optimism, are the man’s facial expression and body language: wearied and downtrodden due to socioeconomic precarity. Angelito Antonio (b. 1939) - Candle Vendor

    Est: ₱600,000 - ₱780,000

Candle Vendor signed and dated 1990 (lower right) oil on canvas 30” x 42” (76 cm x 107 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot WRITE UPAngelito Antonio is a painter who specializes in modernist and expressionist art forms. He was born in Malolos, Bulacan and had already shown signs of interest in the fine arts in his early childhood. He pursued his passion by studying a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts in the University of Santo Tomas until 1963. During his educational pursuits, he was trained by prominent artists such as Vicente Manansala and Galo Ocampo. Unlike his contemporaries, Antonio no longer pursued further education abroad and chose to hone his abilities in the countries by teaching new generations of students in the University of Santo Tomas. Nevertheless, he was able to participate in multiple international art exhibits. His work, titled “Candle Vendor,” depicts a churchyard in a distinctive modernist-expressionist style as seen in the usage of dark blue and other unusual colors. The piece showcases Filipino Catholicism in two ingenious ways within the same canvas. First are the explicit religious iconographies such as the church structure in the background, the various crucifixes, and illuminated candles scattered throughout the frame. This is Christianity within the eyes of the flesh, a religion of ecclesiastical rituals and paraphernalia. However, the second and most noticeable imagery is the candle vendor herself, the large woman on the left side of the frame, whose chaste clothing appears to be drawn after the vestments of the Lord’s Mother, perchance echoing the noble maxim: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the Kingdom of God.” This is the spiritual message of Christianity, to go beyond outward appearances and to view our neighbors, no matter how lowly they may seem to be, with outpouring love. As another maxim says: “Love the Lord your God with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength... Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.” (Christian Talaguit)

Pagoda signed and dated 1973 (lower left) oil on canvas) 30” x 30” (76 cm x 76 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot WRITE UPPagoda encapsulates Angelito Antonio’s homage to his birthplace and hometown of Malolos, Bulacan’s Heritage City and the cradle of the First Philippine Republic, the first constitutional republic in Asia. In terms of cultural trademarks, Malolos is famous for its image of the Virgen Inmaculada Concepcion de Malolos, enshrined at the main altar of the historic Malolos Cathedral, once the presidential palace of Emilio Aguinaldo from September 1898 to March 1899. As a foremost painter of the folk genre, Antonio obtains inspiration from the venerated image of the Inmaculada Concepcion de Malolos and the famed river festival of the nearby town of Bocaue, known as the Bocaue Pagoda Festival, dedicated to the miraculous Holy Cross of Wawa. In this particular work, Antonio celebrates the culture and heritage of his town by making the image of the Immaculate Conception the protagonist of this vibrant work. He depicts a bevy of devotees converging on a pagoda (processional float) decorated with colorful banderitas. The devotees carry the image of the Virgin, with some steering the pagoda through the waters. The colors are bright and exuberant, authentically capturing the vibrancy of the Malolos townsfolk in their jubilant expression of faith and reverence. At the onset of the 1970s, Angelito Antonio had already begun to achieve what perhaps is every artist’s goal in their career: deserving recognition. Foremost of these recognitions was Antonio’s inclusion as among the first recipients of the inaugural edition of the Cultural Center of the Philippine Thirteen Artists Award. Also, during this decade, Antonio won significant awards, particularly from the Art Association of the Philippines (AAP), including a first prize nod and a special award at the 1970 Annual and a major citation for “Best Work” at the 1972 Annual. The people that inhabit his canvases are often workers and vendors, but in this oil painting, it is a family in their home. Antonio belongs to a household that appreciates and practices art, being married to a fellow acclaimed artist, Norma Belleza, and blessed with a son, Marcel Antonio, who also followed the steps of his artistic parents. He and his wife share a predilection for the folk genre, but Antonio renders it in his iconic Cubist aesthetic, as observed in the lot at hand. He also has a characteristic palette that is present in this piece, particularly his acid yellow and his black that juxtaposed with strong primary or muted tertiary colors. He is said to be inspired by the likes of Pablo Picasso, and his art at first showed the influence of Vicente Manansala. Nevertheless, he was able to find his own artistic expression that remains Filipino in color, flavor, and context. Few years before the creation of this 1974 piece, Antonio received the Thirteen Artist Award from the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 1970. (Isabella Romarate)

As a student of the University of Santo Tomas in the 1960s, Angelito Antonio was influenced by the modernist masters who were his teachers, chiefly the National Artist Victorio Edades. This influence is largely visible in his treatment of colors in which tonalities are employed not to describe the world but to evoke a certain mood and atmosphere in the scenery of his paintings. Despite this influence, Antonio has remained steadfast in capturing the lives of ordinary Filipinos. In this piece, Angelito utilizes his signature style that combines his energetic and unorthodox use of shape, color, and form depicting traditional local scenes. Antonio’s mother and child, a common subject amongst artists, is given a significantly different treatment compared to those done by the other modernists. In this work, we see Antonio utilize iconic Cubist style with his predisposition towards one of his signature palettes, namely black, white and gray. This gives the work a familiar and grounded approach that is most welcome amongst the works of Filipino Modernism. Already an immense figure in the history of Philippine visual art, Antonio is one of the pillars of Philippine art to adhere to Modernism’s core tenet of dynamic expression. (J.D.)

In the early days of his artistic career, his Neorealism stood out from the rest as he delineated his shapes with linear clarity, then blurring the adjacent areas into washed-out tones. In his recent canvases, afterwhile, colors are more intense and opaque. Antonio attempts to accomplish the same effect with a restricted black and white palette highlighted by their varied tones and hues by doing away with his primary and tertiary colors. Half a century spans the creative practice of Antonio. He was an art student at the University of Santo Tomas. He owns more than twenty local and international awards to his credit, some of these awards include the 3rd Prize in the 1963 annual art competition of the Art Association of the Philippines and the Grand Prize in 1964. He became a recipient of the Thirteen Artist Award in 1970 and the Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan Award from the City of Manila in 1984. Antonio is married to fellow artist Norma Belleza, with three children who are also painters. (P.I.R.)

Mother and Child signed and dated 1979 (lower right) oil on canvas 36" x 36" (91 cm x 91 cm) PROVENANCE Private Collection, Makati City Distinguished modernist Angelito Antonio rose to prominence due to his well-defined figurativeexpressionist style. In the early days of his career, his artistic style was geared towards monochromatic colors of black and white. He later developed his clear-cut artistry, showcasing his uniqueness by integrating stylized representation and color schemes into his works. Like his wife, Norma Belleza, Antonio has a penchant for the folk genre, depicting fishers, vendors, and other native folks that encapsulate a bona fide representation of Filipino lifestyle and values. This piece showcases his angular color delineation. There is an idiosyncratic high-spiritedness in the jarring hues that brings out the strength of this work. For Antonio, color represents the hope of his obscure subjects—a yearning for alleviation from their miserable situations. The tension between figuration and abstraction in his pieces leads viewers to look into his distinct aesthetic disposition. Always committed to dynamic expression, it is only fitting to consider Antonio as one of the notable pillars of Philippine modern art.

Birdman signed and dated 1976 (upper left) oil on wood 28" x 24" (71 cm x 61 cm) PROVENANCE Private Collection, Manila Hailed from a farmer’s family in Bulacan, the art of Angelito Antonio is mostly drawn from day-to-day life and the rich culture of the province. “Mang Lito” is a name he is often called. Inspired by the likes of Pablo Picasso, his artistry explores a twist on figurative expression paintings directed towards themes and subjects about the traditional and folk settings. The oeuvres of Antonio are his way of celebrating the different cultural aspects of the Philippines. Antonio is famous for his strong and confident diagonal lines, his unique approach at figurative distortion and his use of black juxtaposed with strong brilliant primary or muted tertiary colors. His subjects have been primarily folk genre such as cockfighters, balloon sellers, ice cream peddlers, and vendors, which shows the influence of Vicente Manansala, his teacher at the University of Santo Tomas. In Birdman, a variety of vibrant colors delineated the subject. Antonio portrays in this 1976 oil piece a man whose in his hand are birds tied in strings. (P.I.R.)

Angelito Antonio (b. 1939) Family with Pineapples signed and dated 2008 (lower right) oil on canvas 18" x 18" (46 cm x 46 cm) Angelito Antonio is one of the notable names in Philippine modern art. Born into a farmer’s family in Bulacan in 1939, the subjects of Antonio are mainly of folk genre, from farmers and vendors to mother and child. Heavily influenced by his mentor, Vicente Manansala, Antonio’s works are chromatic masterpieces with geometric and calculated renditions of people and scenes. His subjects are poetically represented in his cubist style and use of vivid festive colors, the most noted of which is a shade of yellow that is almost luminous. An Antonio artwork is popular for portraying scenes from the Filipino way of life, immersing the local themes in rich eloquence and vibrancy in linear clarity, as seen in this 2008 piece. (P.I.R.)
