Angelito Antonio (b. 1939) - Isang Umaga sa Baryo

    Est: ₱500,000 - ₱650,000

PROPERTY FROM THE FREDDIE AND ELIZABETH WEBB COLLECTION Isang Umaga sa Baryo signed and dated 1984 (lower right) oil on canvas 36” x 36” (91 cm x 91 cm) Leon Gallery wishes to thank Mr. Marcel Antonio for confirming the authenticity of this lot Angelito Antonio’s oeuvre is a celebration of his unwavering love and affection for his home country. Always present in his canvases are the daily lives and activities of the native folks, such as vendors, fishermen, cockfighters, and market and barrio scenes, a testament to the richness of Philippine culture and tradition, instilling a sense of pride and appreciation for our heritage. In this untitled oil on canvas work, Antonio exhibited a common scenario in the natives’ neighborhood. Two women are seen in the picture; one is crouching down while holding her arm and inside the comfort of her hut, while the other is outside, seemingly passing by while carrying a basket full of freshly harvested bananas. On one side of the image, banana trees are lined up, and inside the house is an altar—a must-have in Filipino households. A red circle also adorned the yellow sky, signifying the sun at its height. Bearing his signature cubism with fragmented forms and a palette of vibrant colors against shades of yellow, adding darker hues to create shadows and depth, this 1984 piece is undoubtedly crafted by the hands of one of the master painters in Philippine art history. In 1970, Angelito Antonio was included in the inaugural Thirteen Artists Award list by the Cultural Center of the Philippines. (Jessica Magno)

    Angelito Antonio (b. 1939) - Kusina Blg. 2

    Est: ₱500,000 - ₱650,000

Kusina Blg. 2 signed and dated 1972 (lower left) oil on canvas 36” x 36” (91 cm x 91 cm) Leon Gallery wishes to thank Mr. Marcel Antonio for confirming the authenticity of this lot PROVENANCE Private collection, Manila Kusina Blg. 2 is another masterpiece by the acclaimed Filipino artist Angelito Antonio, an oil painting demonstrating a typical countryside household scene. This 1972 work is an image of a mother sitting on the ground and carrying her child while tending to the food she’s cooking. Like his other works, this piece bears Antonio’s developed cubism style and signature acidic yellow hue. Antonio’s oeuvre is a genuine representation of Filipino customs and way of life. It often features vendors, cockfighters, fishermen, as well as market, barrio, and household scenes, an array of subjects that somehow exude a sense of warmth and familiarity. Additionally, Antonio’s exceptional colorwork manifests in his paintings, for he manages to tone down his bright colors by using black to outline his elements and create shadows to contrast his luminous palette. Hence, his pieces aren’t overwhelming or too loud to look at. Yellow is a unique distinction of an Antonio piece. And although this color often signifies joy and optimism, Antonio’s figures feel otherwise, showing instead the opposite of the glorified countryside life. His images are populated with people whose facial expressions and body language have a hint of suffering, misery, and weariness embedded in them. In 1970, the Cultural Center of the Philippines honored Angelito Antonio with the prestigious Thirteen Artists Award, a testament to the significance and impact of his artistry in the Filipino art scene. Est: ₱200,000 - ₱260,000

Fish Vendor signed and dated 1974 (lower right) oil on canvas 25" x 20" (64 cm x 51 cm) Leon Gallery wishes to thank Mr. Marcel Antonio for confirming the authenticity of this lot   In the 20th century, a new artistic movement shook the art world. Fragmented and abstract compositions pierced through the picturesque pastoral landscapes, and the Philippines wasn’t an exception to this shift in art style. Gradually abandoning the Amorsolo school of art, which portrays idyllic sceneries, the post-war Philippine art scene was filled with works featuring distorted images of overlapping shapes, lines, and colors. But despite the change in art style, the subject remained the same for some: the Filipinos’ daily lives and culture. Angelito Antonio was one of the most influential artists who embraced Modernism. Hailing from a family of farmers in Malolos, Bulacan, Antonio’s works reflected the everyday life and rich culture of his province. Vendors, fishermen, cockfighters, market and barrio scenes, and other topics of the folk genre were always present in his canvases. Regarded as both a modernist and an expressionist, Angelito Antonio’s nascent cubist style emphasizes the fragmentation of forms and a palette of strong primary or muted tertiary colors outlined and shadowed by blacks to create depth. Inherently Filipino, Fish Vendor features a woman—a fish vendor—behind her fish stall in the market, waiting for her customers or suki. Furthermore, this was made in 1974, four years after he was honored with the prestigious Thirteen Artists Award by the Cultural Center of the Philippines. A blend of vibrant-colored abstract forms and lines, this piece is a testament to Angelito Antonio’s mastery of art, solidifying his position in the Philippine art scene as one of the last pillars of Modernism. Taga-Baryo signed and dated 1982 (lower right) oil on canvas 36” x 72” (91 cm x 183 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot WRITE UP Angelito Antonio’s masterpieces always manifest his deep love for his home country. The native folks, in their everyday lives and activities, like cockfighting aficionados, vendors, fishermen, and market and barrio scenes, always adorned his canvases. Throughout his career, he developed his own style of cubism with the fragmentation of forms and a palette of strong primary or muted tertiary colors, which would become a distinction of his works from those of other artists. Antonio’s Taga-baryo, just like any of his work, is inherently Filipino. An ordinary barrio scene with five people doing varied but connected activities is shown in this image: harvesting chicken eggs from the coop and men immersed in a discussion about cockfighting. This 1982 work bears his signature artistic style and vibrant colors, shadowed by blacks to create depth. He also used this palette to outline his figures and separate them from each other. Antonio’s careful and clever utilization of lines and colors demonstrates his mastery of his craft, cementing his respectable position in Philippine modernism. (Jessica Magno)

    Est: ₱180,000 - ₱234,000

Study 1 signed and dated 1968 (upper left) oil on paper 28 1/2” x 22 1/2” (72 cm x 57 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot WRITE UP Angelito Antonio’s 1968 Study 1 showcases the myriad of styles he uses and creates a cohesive story out of it. One of the most renowned modernist Filipino artists, Study 1 (created nearer the start of his career) is a fresh look at Antonio’s career. His oeuvre is known for its vibrant color palette full of acidic yellows and cerulean blues and vivid reds; in contrast, this piece, while containing slivers of the color palette he would be known to have, is primarily inky black and off-white scribbles. The scribbles of black and white ink seem to surround the man up in the center (noticeable muted blue in coloring), almost covering him in their own colors. With very little blue noticeable unless one looks deeply, it seems as though the black and white paint is suffocating the man, drowning out his own color. Study 1, as the title suggests, is a study of Antonio’s iconic art style and his beloved muses – the Philippines and the Filipino. A great starting point to observe the growth of his style, Study 1 proves Antonio’s dexterity and talent as one of the most influential artists of the modernist era, the start of a prosperous career that spanned over half a century. Est: ₱600,000 - ₱780,000

PROPERTY FROM THE PRISCILLA L. CHIONGBIAN COLLECTION Taga Nayon signed and dated 1971 (bottom) oil on masonite board 24” x 31” (61 cm x 79 cm) León Gallery wishes to thank Mr. Marcel for confirming the authenticity of this lot WRITE UP Like many artists before him, Angelito Antonio’s oeuvre professes a deep love for his home country. He has taken inspiration from the style of Picasso, delineating his f igures aggressively in the way that separated his nascent cubism from that of National Artist and mentor Vicente Manansala. With his developed sense of color (often in shades of acidic yellow, cerulean, or vivid red), Antonio’s works rang like an electric shock in the Philippine art scene, cementing his name as one of the most influential modernist artists. His 1971 Taga Nayon features his signature color palette. With the acidic yellow as the primary color used, Antonio renders a common Filipino theme with a man and a woman holding up wares in their arms and on their heads. It is a common image to which he gives a fresh twist. As Cid Reyes writes: “Antonio sees beneath the commonplace – transforming it into a personal paean, captive in his pictorial space, delivering what is regarded as routine and ordinary from its state of insignificance to a stature of dignity and […] nobility.” (Hannah Valiente)

Conversations on Philippine Art. Manila: Cid Reyes and The Cultural Center of the Philippines, 1989. Illustrated on page 186. An early work by Angelito Antonio, Habang Buhay was made by the revered Filipino modernist the succeeding year after he was awarded in 1970 the prestigious Thirteen Artists Award by the Cultural Center of the Philippines. It was the inaugural edition of the would-be biennial awards tradition, conceived by Roberto Chabet, the first curator of the CCP Museum of Fine Arts Gallery. Along with Antonio were other inaugural awardees, including Bencab, Eduardo Castrillo, and Jaime de Guzman. Habang Buhay also fortuitously came in succession after Antonio won the two top prizes at the 23rd Art Association of the Philippines (AAP) Annual Competition and Exhibition on December 2, 1970: First Prize for “Oracion” and a Special Award for “Procession.” Antonio’s win in the said iteration of the AAP Annual marked a high point in his then-burgeoning career, seven years after he first won an AAP award at the 1963 Semi-Annual: 2nd Prize for “Deposition.” Antonio had also been teaching at the then-University of Santo Tomas College of Architecture and Fine Arts (CAFA), where he obtained his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1963. The work at hand is dominated by an acid yellow palette, a color that characterized Antonio’s progression from the black-and-white series of works he made at the very beginning of his painting career. Antonio employs explicit distortion of his subjects, and his endowment of flatness seamlessly blends the human figures into their environment, bringing out an inherent atmosphere that visually articulates the enduring commitment of a mother towards rearing and ensuring the welfare of her child. In a sense, Antonio evokes that a mother’s love and care knows no boundaries, transcending beyond material conditions and even life itself. (Adrian Maranan)

Vendor signed and dated 1983 (lower right) oil on canvas 35" x 36" (89 cm x 91 cm) León Gallery wishes to thank Mr. Marcel Antonio for confirming the authenticity of this lot Angelito Antonio’s nascent cubism has often been compared to National Artist Vicente Manansala. The comparison is not without its basis – Manansala was Antonio’s composition professor at the University of Santo Tomas and both artists found themselves drawn to the folk genre, often depicting vendors, cockfighters, and women in their cubist style. But while Manansala’s cubist figures never lost their figurative qualities, Antonio’s distortions, though still figurative, are far more aggressive. He experiments with vibrant – almost neon bright – colors, delineating the figures with sharp abrupt color changes to create a vivid figuration of the Filipino culture. Antonio’s 1983 Vendor is the artist’s rendition of the common Filipino theme. In shades of aggressive reds and vibrant oranges, his titular vendor is sharp and angular with the fruits she sells drawn on the background in a haphazard, almost fantastical manner. Vendors have been a quintessential theme within Philippine history. Artists throughout the generations have put their own spin on the eternal and everlasting idea of vendors. Antonio's glaringly bright rendition all but forces the viewer's eyes on them, calling to attention those we so often neglect. As perpetual as the theme of vendors is to art, so are the vendors. Truly among the unsung heroes of Philippine society, Antonio (along with other artists) highlights the vendors’ indispensable position within society, reminding us of the continuing fight for genuine social and economic equality for all classes. Market Scene signed and dated 1979 (lower left) oil on canvas 36" x 60" (91 cm x 152 cm) PROVENANCE: Private collection, Manila WRITE UP: "Filipino in context, color, and flavor” is perhaps the best descriptor for the art of Angelito Antonio. His predisposition for the folk genre, a penchant he shares with fellow artist and wife Norma Belleza, is evident throughout his oeuvre – brown-skinned figures dominate his canvases, either cockfighters, vendors, or a family unit. His unique and intense use of color made Antonio’s work stand out with his masterful use of tension elevating his pieces even further. With this lot in hand, the charms of Angelito’s art are on full display. Using a deep and saturated color scheme, with his characteristic luminous yellow shade the primary color used. Figures crowd at the corners – women gather together gossiping while others sweep the floor or pound the rice or do their chores. Several Filipino iconographies are seen throughout the canvas: a nipa hut, a durian, a banana, a wooden mat. With an oeuvre teeming with a love for his home country, Antonio is regarded as one of the pillars of modern Philippine art, crafting for himself a distinct aesthetic that draws in collectors and connoisseurs alike. Untitled signed and dated 1985 (lower right) oil on canvas 48” x 46” (122 cm x 117 cm) León Gallery wishes to thank Mr. Marcel Antonio for confirming the authenticity of this lot PROVENANCE: Private collection, Manila WRITE UPIn an art scene full of idyllic sceneries and classic masterpieces, cubism understandably shook the art world when pioneers Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque presented fragmented and abstracted compositions. Objects and figures are broken down and reassembled into abstracted form. Depth is overlooked with cubist artists emphasizing flatness instead. These imaginative upstarts upended the peaceful art world who was dominated by classical art and created what is perhaps the most influential artistic movement of the 20th century. In the Philippines, the postwar art scene found itself in the same predicament. Many upcoming artists found themselves rebelling against the Fernando Amorsolo school of art which portrays picturesque pastoral and romantic views. These artists headed the new artistic movement called Modernism, and one of the most influential is visual artist Angelito Antonio. Antonio’s nascent cubist work has often been compared to his mentor and National Artist Vicente Manansala. However, while Manansala’s distortions still adhere to classical anatomy, Antonio’s were more free and aggressive. In his five decade-long career, Antonio’s proclivities lie to the FIlipino – he draws vendors, mother and child, cock fights, and other topics of folk genre. In this 1985 work, Antonio’s exaggerated figures take center stage. He experiments greatly with colors to delineate his figures, with this particular lot showing his mastery of manipulating colors and lines. Antonio has been labeled both a modernist and an expressionist. He is considered as one of the last pillars of Modernism in the country, his works adhering to the core principles of cubism and dynamic expression. (Hannah Valiente)

December 15, 1985. Full-color photograph and painting description on page 13. WRITE UPNativity encapsulates Angelito Antonio’s creative participation in fostering and celebrating the hallowed spirit of Christmas, the birth of Jesus. Painted in December 1985, just in time for the holiday festivities, the work at hand is a representation of Christ’s birth in Bethlehem. Wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying on a manger, the infant Christ is accompanied by Mary, who is in deep prayer, and Joseph, seen holding his staff adorned with lilies, symbolizing his purity and integrity. The Holy Spirit, in the form of a dove, is emblematic of the Lord’s omnipresence and the birth of His new covenant with His people—the remission of sins and the promise of eternal life. Nativity is a timely and relevant piece for the forthcoming holidays. It is quaint, simple, and restrained in terms of pictorial representation and visual appeal. Yet, it is something hallowed and very dear and near to the Filipino collective heart and soul. (Adrian Maranan)

With more than fifty years of works that celebrate Filipino identity and demonstrate his skill of dynamic expression, Antonio has been considered one of the pillars of Filipino modernism. His personal style of figuration and abstraction of the human body is distinguishable because of his distinctive angular color delineation. As seen from this lot, the yellow, white, blue, and black colors Antonio used, leads the viewers' eyes to discern the figures of two women and possibly a crucifix in the upper left of the canvas.(Raphaela Cordero)

His art is mostly inspired by dayto-day life and the rich culture of the Filipinos. “Mang Lito,” a nickname he is sometimes called, and his wife, Norma Belleza, share the same penchant for the folk genre. His subjects are often folk figures such as vendors, cockfighters, and musicians. For the lot at hand, he decided to depict a classic motif, the Mother and Child. “Filipino in context, color, and flavor” is perhaps the description best fitted for the art of Antonio. Earlier in his career as a fine artist, his style leaned towards monochromatic colors of black and white. He later developed his artistic identity through the inclusion of stylized representation and color schemes into his works. Always devoted to dynamic expression, Antonio is rightly regarded as one of the notable pillars of Philippine modern art. He crafted an aesthetic that has allowed him to maintain his practice for over 50 years, exhibiting both here and abroad. Antonio became a recipient of the Thirteen Artist Award from the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 1970. (Isabella Romarate)

Taga-Barrio signed and dated 1981 (upper right) oil, charcoal, and pastel on canvas 36" x 36" (91 cm x 91 cm) León Gallery wishes to thank Mr. Marcel Antonio for confirming the authenticity of this lot PROVENANCE: Private Collection, Manila Taga-Barrio is among the oeuvres that reveal all the charms remarkable in the art of Angelito Antonio. The most notable is his predilection for the folk genre – an artistic trait that he and his wife who is also a fellow artist, Norma Belleza, share. As observed in the lot at hand, Antonio is truly drawn to depict the day-to-day life of the native folks. The people that inhabit his canvases often are cockfighters or vendors, but in this painting is a family in their home. His characteristic use of color is also present in this painting, particularly his luminous shade of yellow and his black that juxtaposed with strong primary or muted tertiary colors. Well, early in his artistic career, Antonio opted for monochromatic tones. However, later, he was able to hone a unique brand that highlighted his individuality through the use of color schemes, resulting in a palette that is intense and saturated. Furthermore, this painting exhibits the figurativeexpressionist approach that made the modernist rise to prominence. He is said to be inspired by the likes of Pablo Picasso, but his art at first showed the influence of Vicente Manansala. Still, his art remains Filipino in color, flavor, and context. In 1984, only a few years after Taga-Barrio was created, Antonio received the “Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan Award” from the City of Manila. (P.I.R.)

His iconic style features a Cubist- inflected common folk such as cockfighters, street vendors, mother and child, and the family. Heavily influenced by his mentor, National Artist Vicente Manansala, Antonio’s works are chromatic masterpieces with angular and calculated renditions of subjects and scenes. The tension between figuration and abstraction in his pieces leads viewers into taking a closer look into his distinct aesthetic disposition. (J.D.)

Musician signed and dated (lower right) oil on canvas 24" x 32" (61 cm x 81 cm) Hailing from a farmer’s family in Bulacan, the art of Angelito Antonio is mostly drawn from day-to-day life and the rich culture of the province. “Mang Lito” is a name he is often called. Angelito and his family share the same love for art: his wife, Norma Belleza, is a notable artist, and his children are also painters. He is a genre artist acclaimed for his bold diagonal lines, unique approach to figurative distortion, and use of black combined with strong primary or muted tertiary colors. In the early days of his artistic career, his Neorealism stood out from the rest as he delineated his shapes with linear clarity, then blurring the adjacent areas into washed-out tones. In his recent canvases, afterwhile, colors are more intense and opaque. Angelito’s works are often noted as inspired by the likes of Pablo Picasso. However, his folk themes and figures show the influence of Vicente Manansala, his teacher at the University of Santo Tomas. His subjects have been primarily folk genres such as cockfighters, balloon sellers, and vendors. For the lot at hand, Angelito portrays in this oil painting a man who is singing and playing the guitar. Indeed, his oeuvres are his way of celebrating the different cultural aspects of the Philippines. (P.I.R.)

His style was influenced heavily by his mentor at the UST, Vicente Manansala. Just like Manansala, Antonio would render vendors of various kinds of local goods, cockfighters, mother and child, and other folk urban images. What sets his works apart from those of his mentor is a more apparent tension between figuration and abstraction brought about by more angular and sharper figurations. Among the contemporaries of Antonio as an emerging artist in the 1960s who produced urban folk genre art were Antonio Austria and Mario Parial. (J.D.)
