"ANZO" JOSÉ IRANZO ALMONACID (Utiel, Valencia, 1931 - 2006). Untitled. Steel, copy 1/6. Signed and justified on the base. Certificate attached. Measurements: 56 x 17,5 x 14 cm. Anzo made his first works known with the illustration of the mural diary of the Escolapios school, where he studied high school thanks to a scholarship. He attended the School of Arts and Crafts in Valencia, and later moved to study architecture in Barcelona. In 1954 he returned to Valencia with the firm idea of entering definitively in the plastic arts. Anzo belongs to that group of Valencian artists who emerged during the long Spanish post-war period and were trained in the midst of Franco's regime. Pop Art took an increasingly predominant role in his artistic production. He began to experiment with different printing procedures, in a social framework clearly influenced by an economic development accompanied by an inherent change in the cultural dynamics of the moment. The fact of turning the world of everyday mass-media myths into a reference in his works, opened a new artistic door in his production in which television images would play a decisive role. Anzo thus became the introducer of pop in Valencian artistic culture, and the maximum representative of the current at a national level. The artist was driven by the need to combine science and art to assert a message about a reality that he embraced and from which his new creations drank. This new artistic dimension gradually distanced him from Pop Art and brought him closer to what in Europe was known as "Mec Art". Enthusiastic with the use of the new media, Anzo began a series of paintings that he called "Aislamientos" (Isolations). In the 80's he began what would become his last stage. After definitively closing the latent struggle of his isolations, he began a new stage which he called "Lyrical Geometry". In the apparent coldness of the geometric lines, a poetic sensibility could be glimpsed, rediscovering color and lyricism. His work is still linked to abstraction and offered an optimistic vision: "I believe that beauty arises from the balance between the mathematical and the lyrical". In 2003 he received the Plastic Arts Award from the Generalitat Valenciana. Anzo had been retired from art for some years. The death of his wife and other personal circumstances plunged him into a process of introspection. Finally, a long illness ended his life in 2006. Anzo has had exhibitions in more than thirty countries around the world, in addition to most of the national capitals. His work can be found in several museums and notorious public collections, such as: Museo Español de Arte Contemporáneo (Madrid), Amsterdam Stedelijk Museum, Basel Kunstmuseum, Oslo Nasjonalgalleriet, New York Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro Museu de Arte moderna, Tel Aviv Museum, Ljubljana Moderna Galerija, etc.

"ANZO"; IRANZO ALMONACID (Utiel, Valencia, 1931 - 2006). Untitled. Silkscreen, P.A. copy. Signed and justified by hand in the lower right corner. Measurements: 75 x 56 cm. Anzo enters in 1945 in the School of Arts and Trades of San Carlos of Valencia, and in 1949 he goes to Barcelona, where he studied architecture. He exhibited individually and collectively since 1961, and his work acquired renown in Spain as well as in the rest of Europe and the United States. Along with Joan Genovés, he was one of the main renovators of Valencian art, and his work was described as social art. He cultivated various derivations of pop-art, and for a time he worked on the incorporation of images from advertising, television and cinema. Later he focused on the interpretation of simplified advertising images based on constructive elements, purist in character and with a certain intention to disalienate. In 1997 his hometown, Utiel, dedicated a tribute exhibition to him, and in 2003 he received the Plastic Arts Award from the Generalitat Valenciana. In 2009 the University of Valencia paid tribute to him by exhibiting his works.

"ANZO" JOSÉ IRANZO ALMONACID (Utiel, Valencia, 1931 - 2006). "El Viti", 1964. Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower left corner. Work registered in the artist's archive. Measurements: 122 x 94 cm. Santiago Martin Sánchez, known as "El Viti", was one of the great figures of bullfighting in the 60s and 70s. Characterised by the sobriety and good work of the so-called "Salamanca school", he made his debut in August 1956 in the bullring of his native town. In Las Ventas he fought 54 bullfights and won 40 trophies that allowed him to walk out on his shoulders 14 times, to which must be added two more Puertas Grandes as a novillero. These feats have never again been equalled by any bullfighter in the history of the Monumental in Madrid. In 1997, the Ministry of Culture awarded him the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts. On this occasion Anzo offers us a particular dual work divided into two markedly different parts: the upper part with a portrait of the bullfighter and the lower part with the crowd of spectators in the stands. Anzo made his first works known with the illustration of the mural diary of the Escolapios school, where he studied high school thanks to a scholarship. He attended the Escuela de Arte y Oficios in Valencia, and later moved to Barcelona to study architecture. JOSÉ IRANZO ALMONACID, "ANZO" (Valencia, 1931 - 2006). Untitled. Silkscreen on paper. Final art / colour proof. Published by the Ibero-Swiss printing house. Presents dry stamp of the Ibero-Swiss printing house. Measurements: 75 x 56 cm. In Spain, the Ibero-Swiss company hosted the main Spanish artists from the mid-1960s to the 1990s. The serigrapher José Llopis made this firm an indisputable reference in terms of artistic printing. From artists linked to pop art, optical art and geometric art to Zóbel and Tàpies, as well as artists with a clear political commitment such as Renau, Genovés, Equipo Crónica and Equipo Realidad, they all found Ibero-Suiza's silkscreen printing to be an ideal technique for their projects: they liked its industrial character, its procedures, the effects and nuances obtained, and the affinity of all this with the resources of the media. Anzo entered the San Carlos School of Arts and Crafts in Valencia in 1945, and in 1949 he went to Barcelona, where he studied architecture. He had solo and group exhibitions since 1961 and his work became well known in Spain as well as in the rest of Europe and the United States. Along with Joan Genovés, he was one of the main renovators of Valencian art, and his work was described as social art. He cultivated various derivations of pop art, and for a time he worked on the incorporation of images from advertising, television and cinema. Later he focused on the interpretation of simplified advertising images based on constructive elements, purist in character and with a certain disalienating intention. In 1997 his hometown, Utiel, dedicated a tribute exhibition to him, and in 2003 he received the Plastic Arts Award from the Generalitat Valenciana. In 2009 the University of Valencia paid tribute to him by exhibiting his works.

Artistically known as "Anzo", he is one of the most visionary Valencian artists on the Spanish scene. Anzo's work is part of what his contemporary, the art critic Aguilera Cerní, calls Crónica de la Realidad (Chronicle of Reality). Anzo placed the theme of isolation at the conceptual centre of his work. The present work is a reference in the beginnings of this series, in which we can see a solitary character in a threatening space that dehumanises the individual. Anzo entered the San Carlos School of Arts and Crafts in Valencia in 1945, and in 1949 he moved to Barcelona, where he studied architecture. He had solo and group exhibitions since 1961 and his work became famous in Spain as well as in the rest of Europe and the United States. In 1954, he returned to Valencia with the firm idea of definitively entering the plastic arts. Anzo belongs to that group of Valencian artists who emerged during the long Spanish post-war period, and who were trained in the midst of Franco's regime. Pop Art took on an increasingly predominant role in his artistic production. He began to experiment with different printmaking procedures, in a social framework clearly influenced by economic development accompanied by an inherent change in the cultural dynamics of the time. The fact of turning the world of everyday mass-media myths into a point of reference in his works opened a new artistic door in his production, in which television images would play a decisive role. Anzo thus became the introducer of pop art in Valencian artistic culture, and the maximum representative of the trend at a national level. The artist was driven by the need to combine science and art in order to assert a message about a reality that he embraced and from which his new creations drank. This new artistic dimension gradually led him away from Pop Art and towards what was known in Europe as "Mec Art". Enthusiastic about the use of the new media, Anzo began a series of paintings which he called "Aislamientos" (Isolations). In the 1980s he began what was to become his last stage. After definitively closing the latent struggle of his isolations, he began a new stage which he called "Lyrical Geometry". In the apparent coldness of the geometric lines, a poetic sensibility could be glimpsed, rediscovering colour and lyricism. His work is still linked to abstraction and offered an optimistic vision: "I believe that beauty arises from the balance between the mathematical and the lyrical". In 2003 he was awarded the Premio de las Artes Plásticas de la Generalitat Valenciana. Anzo had been retired from art for some years. The death of his wife and other personal circumstances plunged him into a process of introspection. Finally, a long illness ended his life in 2006. Anzo has had exhibitions in more than thirty countries around the world, as well as in most national capitals. His work can be found in various museums and well-known public collections, such as: Museo Español de Arte Contemporáneo (Madrid), Amsterdam Stedelijk Museum, Basel Kunstmuseum, Oslo Nasjonalgalleriet, New York Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro Museu de Arte moderna, Tel Aviv Museum, Ljubljana Moderna Galerija, etc.
