This lot features an oil on canvas sunset landscape painting by Charles P. Appel. Appel (American, 1857 - 1928) was born in Brooklyn and spent most of his life in East Orange, New Jersey. As a young man, he studied under William Merritt Chase and Luis Mora at the New York School of Art and with Frank DuMond at the Art Students League. However, as is evident in the present painting, the greatest influence on his work was George Inness. Appel is known for his subtle, romantic landscapes painted in a Tonalist and Impressionistic style. Signed on the reverse. Measures approx. 12" x 18", with frame 15.75" x 21.75". The auction high for Appel is $17,000. This piece comes with a letter from William H. Wright M.F.A stating his belief in the painting's authenticity. This piece comes from the Dickenson estate of Knoxville, Tennessee. See Photos for Details.
