Karel Appel Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Sculptor, b. 1921 - d. 2006

Karel Appel's art is known for its abstract figures in oil on canvas, resembling folk or children’s artwork at first glance. A deeper look at Karel Appel paintings for sale reveals his affinity with Miro and Klee. Appel was a founding member of the short-lived avant-garde Dutch movement called CoBrA (Copenhagen, Brussels, and Antwerp), which rejected intellectual aesthetics and symmetrical constructs.

Karel Appel's art consists of vibrant colors and bold expressions, normally of animals, people, or hybrid creatures with eccentric features that are portals of emotion. He also used intensely colored lithography in much of his work. Signed Karel Appel lithographs done in his lifetime are highly collectible.

Appel’s artwork hangs in MoMA, the National Gallery of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago. You can also find other eclectic modern paintings for sale online at Invaluable.

Originally published by Galeria Nova Spectra's, Gravenhage. Registration No.: KA-5532X-24 Karel Appel was born on April 25, 1921, in Amsterdam. From 1940 to 1943 he studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam, and In 1946 his first solo show was held at Het Beerenhuis, Groningen, Netherlands, participating in Jonge Schilders (Young painters) at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. At this time, Appel was influenced first by Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, then by Jean Dubuffet. He was a member of the Nederlandse Experimentele Groep (Dutch Experimental Group, 1948) and established the Cobra group (1948–51) with Constant (Constant Nieuwenhuys), Corneille (Guillaume Cornelis Beverloo), and other painters from Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam. The style distinguished itself through bold, expressive compositions inspired by folk and children's art, as well as by the work of Paul Klee and Joan Miro. In 1949 Appel completed a fresco for the cafeteria of the city hall in Amsterdam, which created such controversy that it was covered for ten years. Have a similar item to sell? Original lithograph of Karel Appel for the French magazine Noise. Noise was the successor to the famous magazine Derriere le Miroir and was also published by Galerie Maeght. One of the most sought-after is No. 10, mainly because of the cover lithograph by Sam Francis, but the top issue in the series is No. 7, offered here, because, exceptionally, two world-renowned artists were invited to that one. Karel Appel made four original lithographs, and Sol Lewitt three, over two pages. Double-sided image.

Exhibited: - Kunsthandel Elisabeth den Bieman de Haas, Amsterdam, La Femme: Schilderijen & Beelden, 1992 Note: Registered at the RKD - Netherlands Institute for Art History in The Hague under number 167807. In the mid 1940s, Karel Appel lived and worked in the centre of Amsterdam, with his studio first located on the Zwanenburgwal and later on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal. During those years, he also made a few paintings of models, such as of Jeake Hansma and Tony Sluyter. In 1947, Appel painted this portrait on offer of Jeake Hansma, a model he likely met through her brother, Tjako (Tjeerd) Hansma. Tjako, a barkeeper at a bar on the Zeedijk near Appel’s studio, was briefly part of the Experimental Holland Group, alongside artists like Corneille and Anton Rooskens. Hansma, known for his wild and combative nature, soon left the group to pursue a career as an artist in Paris, where Appel might have caught up with him when he moved there in 1950 together with his wife Tony Sluyter. * Condition report available upon request
