José Jiménez Aranda Sold at Auction Prices

Portrait painter, Genre Painter, Historical-scenes painter, Illustrator, b. 1837 - d. 1903

José Jiménez Aranda (7 February 1837 – 6 May 1903) was a Spanish painter and brother of the painters Luis Jiménez Aranda and Manuel Jiménez Aranda.

Origins and early influences: He was initiated in his first steps towards becoming a painter by Manuel Cabral and Eduardo Cano de la Peña.

Gifted at drawing, in 1851 he entered the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Santa Isabel de Hungría (Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary) in Seville. In 1868 he studied the collections in the Museo del Prado (Prado Museum) in Madrid, especially those of Goya and Velázquez. In 1867 he travelled to Jerez de la Frontera to work as a restorer and designer of stained glass. In 1871 he moved to Rome, where he remained for four years, getting to know Mariano Fortuny, who greatly influenced his paintings.

Travel: In 1881 he moved to París, where he studied for nine years, painting works set in the eighteenth century in the style of Fortuny with notable success. In 1890 he moved to Madrid, painting scenes of everyday life in a more costumbrista style.
Return to his city of birth

The death of his wife and daughter in 1892 resulted in his returning to his city of birth for the rest of his life. There he was appointed member of the Academy of Fine Arts, where he became a teacher, a position he held until his death in 1903. Daniel Vázquez Díaz, Eugenio Hermoso, Ricardo López Cabrera, Manuel González Santos and Sanz Arizmendi were his pupils during this time in Seville.

In the last decade of the nineteenth century he frequented the Alcala de Guadaíra circle of landscape painters, leaving this genre some examples of "grand master" works (according to Sorolla).

Among his best known works are: A Pass in the Bullring (1880), Una desgracia (A Disaster – 1890) and Slave for Sale (c.1897).

He was also a noted cartoonist and illustrator, producing 689 highlighted drawings for the tercentenary edition of Don Quijote (published 1905).

In 1892 he returned to Seville, where he worked as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts until his death. He was teaching in turn to prominent figures such as Eugenio Hermoso, Manuel González Santos, etc., and frequenting the so-called "landscape circle of Alcalá de Guadaira" towards the end of the 19th century. Although his best known works are the scenes inspired by the art of the seventeenth century, he also dealt with religious themes and landscapes.

          Est: €3,000 - €3,500

JOSÉ JIMÉNEZ ARANDA (Seville, 1837 - 1903). "Country fan with embroidered scene". Embroidered thread and gouache on canvas. It has a damaged frame. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 27 x 61 cm; 50 x 86 cm (frame). In this "país de abanico" Jiménez Aranda displays a whole display of virtuosity that goes beyond the composition and the detail of the small format figures adapted to perfection to the dimensions of the support. Not only does he work the work pictorially, but he also introduces details in gold and silver thread that reproduce in a true-to-life manner the "alamares", or decorative appliqués of the bullfighters' costumes. Taking advantage of the landscape format of the Aranda fan, he introduces us to an image that perfectly captures the society of the time, as it not only portrays the bullfighting scene but also shows flamenco women and gentrified men in the background. The work falls within the framework of the rise of regionalism in Spain in the second half of the 19th century and the first third of the 20th century, with the development of an art with a Romantic, costumbrista heritage and a realistic and meticulous style, which focused on depicting subjects, themes and characters that reflected a new sense of folklore. In this context, the painters sought to reflect the types and customs of their own land, which made it different and unique, thus vindicating their own roots and, above all, the traditions and ways of dressing and behaving that were threatened by the notable growth of urban areas and the imposition of new fashions brought in from outside. José Jiménez Aranda, brother of Luis and Manuel Jiménez Aranda, was a Spanish painter and illustrator who began his training with Manuel Cabral and Eduardo Cano de la Peña. His talent for drawing helped him to gain admission to the Santa Isabel de Hungría Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Seville in 1851. In 1868 he was in Madrid, where he learned in the Prado Museum from the best masters, feeling a special predilection for Goya and Velázquez. In 1867 he was in Jerez de la Frontera working as a restorer and designer of stained-glass windows and, four years later, he managed to go to Rome, where he met Mariano Fortuny. He returned four years later. Between 1881 and 1890 he lived in Paris, where he produced a series of works, most notably those set in the 18th century, which were greatly influenced by Fortuny, due to the success they brought him. Although his best-known works are the scenes inspired by 17th-century art, he also dealt with religious themes and landscapes. His work received numerous awards during his lifetime (Honourable Mention at the National Fine Arts Exhibitions of 1864 and 1866; First Medal at the 1890 Exhibition, Medal of Honour at the Munich International Exhibition of 1883...), and is held in important private collections and institutions such as the Museo Carmen Thyssen in Malaga, the Museo de Bellas Artes in Seville, the Museo del Prado in Madrid, etc.

JOSÉ JIMÉNEZ ARANDA (Seville, 1837 - 1903). "The seamstresses", Pontoise, 1873. Oil on canvas. Signed, dated and located in the lower right corner. Measurements: 85 x 58 cm; 105 x 80 cm (frame). Daily labours were enhanced by the attentive look of Jiménez Aranda, capable of extracting the magic pulse of a domestic instant like the one he shows here. Two girls are engaged in their work in an interior bathed in diffuse light, sifted by the amber net curtains, whose shades permeate the variety of garments scattered on their skirts. José Jiménez Aranda began his artistic training in 1851 at the Seville School of Fine Arts, where he was a pupil of Antonio Cabral Bejarano, Eduardo Cano and Manuel Barrón. He also worked as a lithographer, making copies of works from the Museum of Fine Arts in his native city. He completed his training with a trip to Madrid, where he visited the Prado Museum and studied the works of Goya and Velázquez in depth. In 1871 he left for Rome, where he became friends with Mariano Fortuny, who had a notable influence on his pictorial work. In 1875 he returned to Spain before leaving again in 1881, this time for Paris. He arrived in the French capital attracted by the great acclaim and interest his works aroused among the French critics and clientele. He remained in Paris for nine years, painting works set in the 18th century with notable success. In 1890 he returned to Spain and settled in Madrid. During these years he changed the subject matter of his works, which from that time onwards focused on scenes from everyday life. The deaths of his wife and daughter in 1892 led him to settle permanently in Seville. There he was a teacher and president of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Santa Isabel de Hungría, as well as a professor at the city's Official School. Throughout his life he took part in national and foreign exhibitions and was awarded honourable mentions at the National Fine Arts Exhibitions in Madrid in 1864 and 1866 and third medals in 1872 and 1978. Internationally, he sent his works, among others, to the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1878, to the Paris Salon the following year and to the International Exhibition in Munich in 1883, where he was awarded an honourable medal. José Jiménez Aranda is currently represented in the Museo del Prado, the Museo Municipal de Málaga, the Museo de Bellas Artes de Cádiz, the Fundación María José Jove, the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection and the San Francisco Museum (United States), among other public and private collections.

JOSE JIMENEZ ARANDA (Seville, 1837 - 1903). "Girl with kittens". Oil on board. Presents label on the back. Signed in the left inferior zone. Measurements: 33 x 43,5 cm; 59 x 68 cm (frame). The child theme was a recurrent resource in the painting of the author, who liked these portraits because they allowed him to capture the spontaneity and naturalness of his models. It is true that it was not a recurrent theme in his painting, although there is an example in the Prado Museum in Madrid "The little naturalists" made in 1983. Nor is it frequent in his painting, the representation of an interior, as he liked leafy exteriors. However, this work stands out for its delicacy, which not only comes from the childish innocence but also from the sumptuous living room. A space that is defined through different fabrics and prints all defined to perfection. José Jiménez Aranda, brother of Luis and Manuel Jiménez Aranda, was a Spanish painter and illustrator who began his training with Manuel Cabral and Eduardo Cano de la Peña. His talent for drawing helped him to enter the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Santa Isabel de Hungría in Seville in 1851. In 1868 he was in Madrid, where he learned in the Prado Museum of the best masters, feeling special predilection for Goya and Velázquez. In 1867 he was in Jerez de la Frontera working as a restorer and designer of stained glass and, four years later, he managed to go to Rome, where he met Mariano Fortuny. He returned four years later. Between 1881 and 1890 he lived in Paris, making a series of works among which stand out those set in the eighteenth century, with great influence of Fortuny, by the success that brought him. When he returned to Madrid, he dedicated himself to a work with daily themes, but with a more costumbrist air. In 1892 he returned to Seville, where he worked as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts until his death, teaching in turn to prominent figures such as Eugenio Hermoso, Manuel González Santos, etc., and frequenting the so-called "landscape circle of Alcalá de Guadaira" towards the end of the 19th century. Although his best known work are the scenes inspired by the art of the seventeenth century, he also dealt with religious themes and landscapes. His work received numerous awards during his lifetime (Honorary Mention at the National Fine Arts Exhibitions of 1864 and 1866; First Medal at the 1890, Medal of Honor at the International Exhibition in Munich in 1883...), and is preserved in important private collections and institutions such as the Carmen Thyssen Museum in Malaga, the Museum of Fine Arts in Seville, the Prado Museum in Madrid, etc.
