      Est: €9,000 - €10,000

LOUIS ARBANT (active from 1849 to 1880). "Vase. Oil on canvas. Re-coloured. It has a 19th century frame. Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 116 x 89 cm; 143 x 118 cm (frame). We see in this canvas a vase typical of the 19th century, built with a marked scenographic sense, which follows at the same time aesthetic models of classical character. The exuberant bouquet has been worked in each of its lampshades, enhancing the cottony, velvety qualities of the petals and the sensuality of its forms, slightly waved by an intuited breeze. The vibrant chromaticism and the careful study of light stand out. The light falls on certain chromatic areas, leaving others in semi-darkness, creating expressive touches of light. The stage is clearly delimited, following a baroque composition, open to a neutral, dark background, on which the flowers are vividly highlighted by the light, which falls directly on them, leaving the stage in semi-darkness. Formally, the very delicate, almost invisible, miniaturist and nuanced brushstrokes should also be noted, which skilfully recreate the different qualities, tones and play of light and shade. The still life or still life occupied the lowest rung of the hierarchy of genres in the history of art, but it became increasingly popular with buyers. In addition to the independent subject of the still life, it addressed other types of painting by using prominent, usually symbolic elements and images that drew on a multitude of elements from nature, apparently to reproduce a part of life. It should be noted that within the still life, the depiction of flowers, or vases, established itself as a highly prized sub-genre among collectors, who saw in these paintings the perfect element for the decoration of their extensive estates, which is why the floral still life was one of the most explored genres during the 19th century.
