Hector Arce-Espasas Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1982 -

Héctor Arce-Espasas b. 1982, Puerto Rico, Hector lives and works in New York

Hector Arce-Espasas uses images that are inherent to the geographic and cultural milieu of the tropics. He appropriates and transfigures some of these images in order to transgress their current symbolic meaning in a sensuous play of conflicting alliances. The images lure and repel while playing with the idea of the pineapple as the easily attainable commercial fruit of ‘tropical paradise’.

HECTOR ARCE-ESPASAS (San Juan/Puerto Rico 1982 - lives and works in New York) Untitled (Palm Tree). 2014. Acrylic on canvas. Monogrammed and dated on the reverse: HAE 14. 147.5 x 122 cm. Provenance: Private collection Switerzland. Hector Arce-Espasas was born in San Juan in Puerto Rico in 1982. He began his studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and then moved to New York to study at Hunter College. In the following years he took part in various group shows, especially in the United States and Great Britain, so that his artistic work became increasingly well known. He was awarded various artistic residencies, which led him to different parts of America, as well as various arts prizes. In 2014 he had his first solo show at a gallery in Turin, which marked his breakthrough in Europe. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn. His childhood in Puerto Rico shaped his entire artistic production and is the main theme of his work. His paintings and sculptures are imbued with images of the tropics. Southern landscapes, fruits, trees and nature are images which he uses again and again. They are symbols of an idyllic nature, which he transposes and presents as a portrait of this region. Behind these beautiful images is hidden a critique of the mass tourism and the fantasies which are always associated with the region. Through his art he pays tribute to the southern landscape of his childhood, and his cultural identity, to which he adds, however, a darker and wider meaning. With “Untitled (Palm tree)” he plays with the idea of the palm, which he depicts as a firework. They are the main symbol of the tropical landscape and southern coasts, so beloved of the tourists. The palm trees painted with a dynamic brush stroke on the calm, beige canvas, produce the unique effect of Acre-Espasa’s paintings. --------------- HECTOR ARCE-ESPASAS (San Juan/Puerto Rico 1982 - lebt und arbeitet in New York) Ohne Titel (Palm Tree). 2014.
