      Attributed to John Wykeham Archer, ARWS,  British 1808-1864 Ye Song of Simorg;  album of drawings in pencil, pen, black and blue ink, and collage on paper stuck down on card, with one printed page, one page signed and dated 'J.W. Archer. / Jan. 4. 48' on the card (upper edge), 26.5 x 34 cm., forty-two sheets in total.  Provenance:  Anon. sale, Christie's South Kensington, 17 December 1999, lot 1.  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Archer was a prolific illustrator, working both as a draughtsman and a printmaker, producing illustrations for a range of publications which included Charles Knight's (1791-1873) 'History of London', Blackie & Son's 'Comprehensive History of England', 'The Gentleman's Magazine', and 'Illustrated London News'.    Archer sometimes produced work under the pseudonym 'Mr Zigzag the Elder', mainly in his series of articles which he wrote for Douglas Jerrold's Magazine entitled 'The Recreations of Mr Zigzag the Elder'. The present album refers to 'Zigzag', with one of the earlier pages inscribed in pencil 'ye Song of Simorg / being / Zigzag his Lament'.
