            Feb. 24, 2022

Large 20th C. Felipe Archuleta Wooden Cobra Sculpture

            Est: $3,000 - $4,000

This is an oversized item that may require special shipping. Please inquire for a quote before bidding. Felipe Benito Archuleta (Hispanic American 1910-1991), ca. 1970 to 1980s CE, "Cobra." This is a magnificent hand carved and painted wooden snake sculpture by the folk artist Felipe Archuleta. The piece consists of a large tree branch or vine with a naturally wavy profile, perfectly capturing the curving body of this cobra. The surface is painted in soft hues including gray with brown spots and a creamy beige stomach. The head features the characteristic flared hood with "eye patterning" on the back of the neck. The eyes and nostrils are incised, and the mouth has a small slit with a forked leather tongue. The wood and materials in this piece are all found items taken from Archuleta’s or his neighbors' land, and this branch needed minimal adjustments; one can see the notches where he cut away protruding branches. Archuleta uses chainsaws and chisels to shape each piece then adds additional elements and paint. This lengthy cobra needs a snake charmer who can adequately display this large sculpture! Size: 79" L x 3.5" W x 22" H (200.7 cm x 8.9 cm x 55.9 cm) Felipe Benito Archuleta was born in Santa Cruz, New Mexico into a poor family that immigrated from Mexico. He left school at an early age to help support his family as a field laborer, stone mason, and then as a carpenter for most of his adult life. When he was 57, Archuleta fell on especially hard times and turned to religion and intense prayer to seek an answer to his situation and give his life a more purposeful direction. He claims that God spoke to him and commanded Archuleta to use his carpentry talents to carve animals. However, Archuleta also visited a gallery owned by Dr. Rudy Kieve who sold hand-carved sculptures, which may have been his true inspiration. Archuleta quickly gained recognition for his distinctive style and sometimes terrifying creations, often focused on exaggerating the teeth and claws of the animals. He is considered the father of modern "Non Santero" carvings, and his work has been exhibited in many folk-art exhibitions and museums. His son, Leroy Archuleta (1949 to 2002), and grandson Ron Archuleta Rodriguez (1968 to present) have followed in his footsteps and assisted in the workshop, becoming talented carvers as well. For more information, please see the American Folk Art Museum website essay "American Perspectives: Felipe Benito Archuleta." Provenance: ex-William and Jane Frazer, Aspen, Colorado, USA, acquired November 9, 2005; ex-Owings-Dewey Fine Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. This is a fabulous hand carved and painted wooden sculpture by the folk artist Felipe Archuleta. The mother has a tuft of dried grass in her mouth to add to the nest inside the cavity. The wood and materials in this piece are all found items; taken from Archuleta’s or his neighbors' land. Archuleta uses chainsaws and chisels to shape each piece and attaches the pieces to each other with nails. An adhesive mixed with sawdust is applied to fill in any gaps and is then painted. • 20th C. Felipe Archuleta Wooden Woodpecker Sculpture
            Oct. 21, 2021

20th C. Felipe Archuleta Wooden Woodpecker Sculpture

            Est: $3,600 - $5,400

Felipe Benito Archuleta (Hispanic American 1910-1991), ca. 1970 to 1980s CE, "Woodpeckers." This is a fabulous hand carved and painted wooden sculpture by the folk artist Felipe Archuleta. The piece consists of a large tree trunk that is left in a mostly natural state, with a mother woodpecker carved separately and attached to the trunk, and a wooden chick's head protruding from a natural cavity. Size: 15" W x 28" H (38.1 cm x 71.1 cm) Felipe Benito Archuleta was born in Santa Cruz, New Mexico into a poor family that immigrated from Mexico. For more information, please see the American Folk Art Museum website essay "American Perspectives: Felipe Benito Archuleta." Large 20th C. Felipe Archuleta Wooden Cobra Sculpture

            Est: $4,000 - $6,000

Est: $3,000 - $4,000

Felipe Benito Archuleta (American, 1910-1991), Bikini Lady and Child, dated 1974, Carved and painted wood, 55" x 26" x 36". Signed and dated "10-22-1974 F.B.A." An early and rare work by one of the major figures in Navajo Folk Art. Provenance: Dr. Halvor and Astrid Jaeger Collection; Purchased from the Davis Mather Folk Art Gallery (Santa Fe, New Mexico). Lot essay: American folk artist Felipe Benito Archuleta (1910-1991) is frequently considered the grandfather of the non-santero wood carving tradition in his native New Mexico. He began sculpting relatively late in life, prompted, as he explained, by a command from God. Though he was moved to utilize the same soft cottonwood that generations of Southwestern carvers have employed, he felt he was unworthy to be a santero maker of Saints and turned his hand to sculpting animals. This piece at auction, however, is a human woman clad in a pink bikini with yellow stars; her wide stance was probably inspired by the branching of the wood from which she was carved. A beam of painted wood props the figure up from behind, allowing this large sculpture measuring 55" x 26" x 36" to stand on its own. A smaller, child figure with crossed arms, stands as tall as the woman's knee. The child is not attached to the larger carving, but is clearly part of the same piece by virtue of attire; the same pink hue as the woman's bikini, trimmed with the same green. Though bearing the arresting, distinctive expression of much of the artist's work, this depiction of a person is a rarity in his oeuvre. Archuleta's work appears in the American Folk Art Museum in New York, the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC, and the Milwaukee Art Museum, amongst others.
