Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Disciple and collaborator of Antonio de Pereda, Alonso del Arco was one of the most important figures in seventeenth-century Madrid painting and one of the most prolific painters. He practiced the fresco technique, as can be seen in the decoration of the dressing room of the hermitage of the Virgen de la Oliva in Almonacid; but, mainly, he stood out as a painter of canvases with religious themes. One of the themes in which he obtained a greater fortune was that of the Immaculate Conception, of which he made different versions for enclosures and temples. The sources cite that of the Capuchins of the Prado and that of the Trinitarians of the Convent of Jesus in Madrid, that of the church of the Capuchin convent of Toledo, those that were in the sacristy of the San Pedro ad Vincula in Vallecas and that of the chapter house of the cathedral-magistral of Alcalá de Henares. We also have news of a large Purisima that was in the convent of Augustinian mothers in Medina del Campo, the one in the parish church of Villanubla and the one in the convent of the Augustinian women in Valladolid. In public and private collections, the example preserved in the Museo Nacional del Prado and the work dated 1692 that belonged to the old collection of José Lázaro Galdiano stand out. The unpublished and autograph work that we present here, from a private Spanish collection, is an example that perfectly illustrates the model of the Immaculate Conception that the painter configured and for which he obtained so much fame in his time. With a color palette of soft tones and displaying a subtle gradation, Alonso del Arco places the Virgin in the central compositional axis, wearing the white tunic and blue mantle, characteristic of the Immaculate Virgin. She appears "clothed with the sun", with the moon under her feet, crowned with twelve stars and stepping on the dragon, as described in the book of Revelation. Above her head, following the same compositional central axis, is the dove of the Holy Spirit and to her sides are distributed different groups of angels carrying some of the symbols of the Litany. The painter, in the distribution of this symbology, visually represents the “heaviest” architectural elements in the lower register (tower, orchard, gate...), the objects in an intermediate register (crown, sceptre, mirror...), leaving those "lighter" symbols at the top of the scene (rose, lily, palm...), thus giving the composition a much more orderly and balanced sense. Measurements: 200 x 145 cm.

ABRAHAM BEWIRTET DIE DREI ENGEL Öl auf Leinwand. 146 x 108 cm. (8514043) Alonso del Arco, 1625 Madrid - 1700, attributed to Oil on Canvas. 146 x 108 cm.
