A comprehensive study of Juan Arellano’s career as a painter and architect would reveal a flamboyant imagination responding to the various European art movements with a facility and elan truly dazzling: Impressionism, Pointillism, Symbolism, Fauvism, and Expressionism. His eclectic sensibilities endow his moody outdoor scenes with a quiet power.

      Juan M. Arellano (1888 - 1960) - Landscape

      Est: ₱200,000 - ₱260,000

PROPERTY FROM THE DON J. ANTONIO ARANETA COLLECTION Landscape signed (lower right) oil on canvas 12" x 16" (30 cm x 41 cm) LITERATURE: Araneta, Antonio S., ed. 1030 R. Hidalgo: Volume II, Legacy in Art. Manila: Mara, Inc., 1986. Full-color illustration and painting description on page 153. Though most known for his architectural feats (he after all designed the National Museum of the Philippines and The Manila Central Post Office, among others), Juan Arellano’s prowess in painting cannot be understated. He was touted as a possible “successor of Juan Luna” had he focused on art, and this talent is evident in his Landscape. Resembling the impressionistic works of his time, Arellano depicts a serene picture of a busy park, as evidenced by the children roaming and playing around and a shining example of his oft-forgotten talent. • Juan M. Arellano (1888 - 1960) - Portrait of Natividad Ocampo–Arellano
      Dec. 02, 2023

      Juan M. Arellano (1888 - 1960) - Portrait of Natividad Ocampo–Arellano

      Est: ₱400,000 - ₱520,000

PROPERTY FROM A VERY DISTINGUISHED COLLECTOR Portrait of Natividad Ocampo–Arellano signed (lower right) ca. 1950 oil on wood 32” x 24” (81 cm x 61 cm) WRITE UPThe portrait shows a completely modern, short-haired. smiling lady dressed in a casual yellow blouse, in frount of a fountain with a putto surrounded by flowers. It is like a candid photograph taken at whim, in the sense that the lady seems to have been at the fountain enjoying the trickling water and the flowers then turned around quickly for the photographer. It feels spontaneous and uncontrived. It is a portrait in the contemporary sense of the word and timeless in its modernity. Juan Arellano in this painting eschews the traditional imperceptible refinement for aggressive, evocative brushstrokes which presage the era of Modernism even before the glory days of the PAG Philippine Art Gallery in the late 1950s. The sunlit strokes depict his beloved wife Natividad Ocampo Arellano.

      Juan M. Arellano (1888 - 1960) - View of San Juan Courtyard

      Est: ₱160,000 - ₱208,000

Juan M. Arellano (1888 - 1960) View of San Juan Courtyard signed (lower left) ca. 1940 oil on wood 17 1/2" x 12 1/2" (44 cm x 32 cm) "THE LOPEZ LEGACY COLLECTION : A MICROCOSM OF GREAT PHILIPPINE ART An Architect’s Home The Art of Livin by LISA GUERRERO NAKPIL Juan Marcos Arellano was one of the most influential architects of the American Commonwealth, creating a series of buildings that would define that golden age: From the Philippine Senate (which now houses the National Museum), the Manila Post Office, Rizal Memorial Coliseum, Jones Bridge, and the jewel in the crown of all of them, the art-deco palace still known today as the Metropolitan Theater. He was, after all, one of the first pensionados, sent by the American regime to absorb the new-fangled ways of the United States. He trained and worked as an architect in New York. Arellano’s home was in San Juan, a prosperous suburb then as now of Old Manila, favored by American millionaires and Filipino ‘de buena familia’ as well as its artists and writers. His mansion rose behind elaborate wrought-iron gates as grand as those of Versailles and sat on top of one of San Juan’s hills with a commanding view of the capital city below. In this painting, we catch a glimpse of its grandeur : a peristyle — or courtyard surrounded by columns looks out on a hillside view covered by a thick grove of fruit trees. The plump white clouds of a bright summer sky can be seen through the leaves. The columns are particularly interesting: they are ‘Solomonic’ columns of biblical fame, suggesting not just the Temple of Solomon but also its beginnings as the Ark of the Covenant. (Tourists to Saint Peter’s Basilica will recognize the helical shapes that suggest climbing vines.) A pair of ceramic elephants perch at the top of the front steps in elegant but friendly greeting to guests. These were favorite decorative touches of 19th-century homes and are a highly personal memento of the private home of a celebrated architect who had perfected the art of living. View of the San Juan Courtyard is an important touchstone representing those golden days of the 1920s and 30s of Manila art and architecture. "
