This is a reproduction of the famous early painting "The South Atlantic" by Josef M. Arentz, made in 1943 by Publisher David Ashley of New York, who reproduced several of Arentz's marine paintings. It is registered with the Library of Congress Catalog of Copyright Entries Part 4. 1943 New Series, Volume 38, No.1 as Reproduction of a Work of Art. Josef M. Arentz was born in 1903 in Odendorf, Germany and died in 1969. A letter written by Josef Arentz printed in the Summer 1952 issue of "The Pine Cone" published by the State of Maine Publicity Bureau references the reproductions of David Ashley. In the same letter Arentz beautifully sums up his perspective on his art and life with a quote; "Thoughts are like the Ocean: its heart beating endlessly. There may be stormy or peaceful swells, but they are always there." Measures approximately 37" x 31" in heavy wood frame, painted gold. Label on reverse with title and artist name. Josef Arentz (1903-1969) was a renowned painter of maritime scenes, though he also painted numerous New England landscapes and portraits. He was born in Odendorf, Germany in 1903 and came to the United States in 1926. he had a one-man show, and a work accepted for the Maryland Artists Exhibition earned an award from the Baltimore Museum of Art. Shortly thereafter he began reproducing some of his paintings for the New York publisher, David Ashley. A visit to Portland Head Light in Portland, Maine, inspired Arentz's move to Maine.

MAINE, 20TH CENTURY A wonderfully painted oil on canvas of the rocky seashore in Kennebunk, Maine. The painting is signed lower right Josef M. Arentz, 48' for the year 1948.This wonderful painting is beautifully illuminated as you see the light shimmer off the white caps of the waves. When hung on the wall and simply lighted with an art light this painting just explodes with life, it really does. I have had Arentz paintings before, I have looked at every comp and this rates as good as you'll find when it comes to a Rocky shore painting of this type. The painting retains the original frame which is a wonderful wood carved frame with gesso prepared surface which is then gilt, on top of the gilding is an original thick translucent coppery lacquer I see from time to time on frames from this period. The painting is 100% guaranteed for life by us to be be the hand of the well listed Maine artist, Joseph M. Arentz.
