    J. F. Argent (19th Century) The S.S. Ems off the Needles, Isle of White signed and dated 'J.F. Argent 1885' (lower left) oil on canvas 50.5 x 91.5cm (19 7/8 x 36in). Footnotes S.S. Ems, built by John Elder & Co Govan, made its maiden voyage from Bremen to New York via Southampton in 1884 as part of the Norddeutscher Lloyd weekly transatlantic service known for its speed. She was 429.8 feet long by 47 feet wide with a gross tonnage of 4730. Originally named after the German river, she was sold in 1901 to Elder Dempster and renamed Lake Simcoe before being broken up in Genoa in 1905.
