Il participe à la restauration du Duomo de Milan et reçoit des commandes publiques. Décoré de la Légion d’honneur et de l’Ordre de la Couronne d’Italie, il expose dans toute l’Europe.       GIOSUE ARGENTI (ITALIAN, 1819-1901): A LIFE-SIZE MARBLE FIGURE OF A SLEEPING GIRL, 1869

      'Il sonno dell'innocenza' (The Sleep of Innocence), the sleeping, nude maiden holding a rose in her left hand, her head resting on a tasselled cushion, the base modelled as a draped mattress, signed 'CAV. GIOSUE ARGENTI F. MILANO 1869', white Carrara marble, 125cm wide x 61cm deep Catalogue Note: Argenti won a gold medal at the 1867 Paris Exposition Universelle for his marble figure 'The Sleep of Innocence'. The present version is dated 1869, and so must be a second version, perhaps produced as a special commission as the original was so successful. Argenti trained at the Accademia di Belle Arti of Milan, where he worked along with Abbondio Sangiorgio, Francesco Somaini, Benedetto Cacciatori and Pompeo Marchesi. Among his works are the Bishop Novasconi statue in the Duomo of Cremona; La Martire;  La Rosa degli Amori and Perseus freeing Andromeda (1884). Several of his works have won prizes at the Esposizione Nazionale of Florence, the Paris International Exposition and the Munich International Exhibition,  he  also exhibited in Vienna, Philadelphia, and Santiago de Chile. In 1867 he was knighted into the legion d'Onore of France. He was also entered into the Order of the Crown of Italy, and honorary associate of the Academies of Fine Arts of Milan, Urbino and Naples. A further version of this enchanting sculpture, but of slightly later date (1872)  was sold at Sotheby's, New York, 22 April 2017, lot 279, sold $15,000.
